In the Year of the Monkey, B.E. 2415 (1872), four years after His Majesty King Chulalongkorn ascended the throne, he made a journey to India. Upon reaching the city of Varanasi, His Majesty went to pay homage and make offerings at the Paribhogacetiya shrine in the Deer Park, where the Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon to proclaim the establishment of Buddhism—a place held by Buddhists worldwide to be one of the most important holy sites in the Buddhist faith.

When writing this tale, I wondered whether any Thai person had ever reached Mrigadayavan before King Chulalongkorn. I could think of no one. So I investigated further in the chronicles, and was struck by what I found. It appears that our country had lost contact with India in matters of Buddhism since before the reign of Phra Ruang in Sukhothai. Buddhism in India had long been subjected to destruction by those of wrong views, both followers of Islam and followers of Hinduism, until the Buddhist community and its places of worship were entirely wiped out. There had been no Buddhist population in India since around Buddhist Era 1600, some two hundred years before the establishment of the Phra Ruang dynasty. Consequently, the Thais had to turn instead to Ceylon, receiving from there the Tripitaka, together with the monastic lineage and various religious objects, including sacred relics and shoots of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree. This is evident in the chronicles and stone inscriptions of the Sukhothai period. The same continued in the Ayutthaya period. Although travel between Thailand and India still took place, it was for trade and had nothing to do with religion, and merchants traveled only to the cities of southern India, in what is now the Madras region. There is no record of any Thai person reaching central India, where the Buddha preached his religion. Therefore, King Chulalongkorn's journey to Mrigadayavan in Buddhist Era 2415 was significant. In old-fashioned terms, one might say that he went to seek out the Buddhist religion, which had lain neglected for more than seven hundred years. That journey also gradually broadened Thai knowledge and understanding of Buddhist archaeology, down to the present day. I shall first tell what appeared at the earliest stage.

When King Chulalongkorn returned from India, he brought a photograph of the Dhamek Stupa, the great stupa standing at Mrigadayavan, and presented it to Prince Pawaret Wariyalongkorn. This was the first time Thais had seen an image of an Indian stupa. The Dhamek Stupa was round, broad at the bottom and narrowing toward the top, appearing as two bulging sections, unlike the form of stupas built in Thailand. Prince Pawaret and several other senior monks examined it and unanimously concluded that the form of the Dhamek Stupa corresponded to the Pali description that a stupa was shaped like a haystack. (In Thailand there are two forms of haystacks: one resembles an overturned pot, while the other has two bulges like the Dhamek Stupa.) At that time, some people came to believe that the original form of the stupa must have been two-bulged like the Dhamek Stupa, and they used the design to build several such structures. Of those I remember, one was built in the compound of Wat Sommanat Vihara, near the residence of Somdet Phra Wanarat (Buddhasiri Thap), and another at Wat Kanmatuyaram. They seem still to exist today. The fashion for traveling to India to study archaeology connected with Buddhism began with King Chulalongkorn's journey on that occasion. Later, both lay Thais and monks undertaking ascetic pilgrimages increasingly traveled to central India.

I went to India in B.E. 2434 (1891), nineteen years after King Chulalongkorn's visit. During that intervening period, the interest in studying and pursuing archaeological knowledge in India had grown far more flourishing than before. Even I myself, upon arriving in India, found great delight in examining customs and traditions that corresponded with those of Thailand, as I have recounted in other tales. In this tale, I shall tell of the sacred shrines of use (Paribhogacetiya) that I venerated, as well as the various Buddhist relics and artifacts I sought out and brought back to Thailand on that occasion.

When I was staying in the city of Benares, I went to pay homage at the stupa at the Deer Park, but the townspeople called the place Sarnath, a name derived from "Sarangganatha," a Magadhi term meaning "the refuge of the deer." The Deer Park lies outside Benares to the east, about 160 sen from the Ganges. At the time of my visit, it was still very overgrown and desolate. The Archaeological Department in India had merely excavated here and there in search of antiquities to send to museums; it had not yet begun excavating systematically to expose the layout or undertaking preservation in the manner practiced today. At the Deer Park in those days, the only prominent structure still visible was the lofty Dhamek Stupa. There were also some carved stone objects that had only recently been discovered and had not yet been sent to the museum, but had been gathered together in one place. I was able to obtain some of them, as I shall relate later. Apart from these, there were only mounds of earth, large and small, scattered all around. A later guidebook gave the dimensions of the Dhamek Stupa as approximately 24 wa from the base to the top, with a diameter of 15 and a half wa at its broad middle section; that broad section was faced with stone for about 6 wa in height. When I examined the Dhamek Stupa, I formed a new opinion different from the understanding current in Bangkok, namely that its two-tiered shape, like a haystack, was its original design, as mentioned earlier. I observed that the lower, broad section was faced with stone, while the upper section, where it narrowed inward, was built of brick. I thought that its appearance in two tiers was probably the result of repairs and alterations, rather than the form originally intended by its builders. Considering the matter further, I concluded that the original structure was probably faced with stone throughout. Perhaps people of false beliefs had dismantled and removed the stone blocks from the upper portion, leaving only the brick core. Or perhaps they had intended to destroy the stupa entirely, but their demolition stopped halfway down. Later, people of right belief undertook repairs, rebuilding the brick core all the way to the top, but stopped without replacing the stone facing on the upper portion, leaving it exposed as it is today. The original form of the stupa must have been something like an inverted pot, resembling a haystack whose sides did not narrow inward, as described above. That was all I thought when I went there to pay homage. Many decades later, I saw the original form of a stupa at the ancient city of Sriksetra, a city of the same period as Nakhon Pathom, near Prome in Burma. Its shape was like an inverted pot or an overturned water-pot, with a throne-like platform bearing an umbrella finial at the top. The circumambulatory terrace was made simply like a single step attached to the base of the stupa. The original form of the stupas at Anuradhapura in Lanka was likewise of this kind. I also saw illustrations in an English book about Buddhist stupas in Gandhara, which stated that the original form of the stupas was like this. The book went on to explain that the ancient Indians feared sin and did not demolish or dismantle stupas. When repairs or restorations were needed, they simply built additions around the original stupa, causing the form of the stupas to change in the way seen in later periods. At the Dhamek Stupa in the Deer Park, they likewise discovered an original structure, believed to have been built in the time of King Ashoka, which was not very large and lay within the present structure. The visible brick structure was built over the original, and later a pious donor built another outer layer of stone around it, but the work was left unfinished. They observed from the carved designs that they were in the style of craftsmen of the Sunga dynasty, around 450 B.E. Thus the Dhamek Stupa came to have its two-tiered form. If this is indeed what happened, then my supposition that it was damaged by people of false beliefs was mistaken. In Thailand, too, we have traditionally held the same principle as the Indians: Buddhist stupas should not be dismantled, even for the purpose of restoration. There is an easy example to cite: when King Mongkut built the Phra Pathom Chedi, he built a great stupa over the earlier Phra Pathom Chedi; he did not demolish or dismantle the original structure in any way.

There are four great sacred sites in India called Bhogachetiyas, all connected with events in the Buddha's life. When the Buddha became ill at the time he was about to enter Nirvana, Ananda expressed his concern that after the Buddha's passing, the members of the Buddhist community who had been accustomed to seeing him continually would be left lonely and sorrowful. The Buddha therefore compassionately granted permission that whenever any member of the Buddhist community felt lonely, they might go to contemplate the Dhamma at four places connected with the Buddha's life: the place where the Buddha was born, in Lumbini Grove near Kapilavastu; the place where he attained enlightenment, at Gaya; the place where he delivered his first sermon and established the Buddhist religion, at Mrigadayavan in Benares; and the place where he entered Nirvana, in the Sal Grove at Kusinara. They could visit whichever place was convenient. Thus, from the passing of the Buddha onward, members of the Buddhist community continued to make offerings at these four places. They were called Bhogachetiyas because they were associated with the person of the Buddha. Of the four, Mrigadayavan received more worshippers than the others because it was near a major city, while the other three were in smaller settlements. The great sacred site at Mrigadayavan consequently became larger than the others. The Archaeological Department found antiquities displaying different artistic styles and observed that restoration had taken place in every period while Buddhists remained in India, and that the site had been more thoroughly dismantled and destroyed by people of wrong views than anywhere else because it was closer to a major city than the other sites.

Gaya was a small town. When King Chulalongkorn visited India, the railway had not yet reached it, so he was unable to go. By the time of my visit, the railway was operational; nevertheless, the Indian government had not planned for me to go there. Since I expressed a desire to pay homage at the Paribhoga-cetiya marking the site of the Buddha's Enlightenment, they arranged the visit as requested. Upon arriving, I saw the accommodation difficulties faced by the government, as there were no lodgings available. They had to allocate rooms for me in the Magistrate's house, and pitched several canvas tents in his courtyard to accommodate the others traveling with me. However, it had one advantage over other places: Mr. Grierson, the Magistrate, was a scholar of archaeology as well as Indian religions and languages—he was later knighted and became renowned as a distinguished scholar. As soon as he learned of my upcoming visit, he prepared three saplings of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained Enlightenment, planting them in bamboo tubes so I could bring them back to Thailand (though I will save the story of those Bodhi saplings for later). Mr. Grierson mentioned that within the district of Gaya, many ancient Buddhist artifacts still lay buried under the earth in numerous locations. It was a pity my stay was so short; had there been enough time, he would have taken me to Rajagriha, the city of King Bimbisara—now a deserted site a day's cart-ride away—bringing along picks and shovels, which would surely have made for an enjoyable archaeological dig.

In Gaya, there were two ancient sacred sites held in high reverence by the people: one was at Gaya-sisa, where the Vishnupad Temple stood as a place of veneration for Hindus, and the other was the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, revered by Buddhists. Even at Bodh Gaya, Hindus also came to worship, because the Hindus of Gaya largely followed Vaishnavism, holding the belief that Lord Vishnu reincarnated as the Buddha, as recounted in the story of the Ten Avatars of Narayana. Consequently, travelers—both Hindus and Buddhists—flocked to worship at both sacred sites, numbering constantly around 100,000 people each year.

The great sacred site at Bodh Gaya lies about 75 sen from the town of Gaya, with a road suitable for a horse-drawn carriage all the way. One must first pass the Hindu temple of Gayasisa. The temple stands in the middle of a village. I stopped to look around, and the Hindus welcomed me, took me into the temple, and hospitably entertained me. The temple's legend says that originally there was a yaksha named Gaya, a sinful and brutal creature who went about tormenting human beings. Vishnu, that is, Narayana, was therefore compelled to descend and subdue the yaksha. He placed his right foot on the creature's chest, cut off its head, and threw it away, then cursed the head so that it became the stone that remains there today. The impression of Vishnu's foot where he stepped on the creature's chest also remains. The sacred site was therefore called Vishnupada. The Hindus believe that anyone who goes there to worship may make a vow to help deceased relatives escape the evil realms, and so they go there to make offerings and accumulate merit for this purpose. I went only as far as the entrance of the temple. I was afraid that the Hindus might resent my entering, but I saw a large black stone, believed to represent the yaksha Gaya, about eight sok long. It looked rather like a reclining person and lay on a pedestal in the middle of the temple, much like the roll of cloth placed on the throne at Wat Dong Rang in Thailand. I did not see the Vishnupada footprint, but a guidebook described it as a footprint made of silver, about the length and width of a human foot, attached to the floor of a hollow in the stone at the chest of the yaksha figure. The villagers made replicas of the footprint in copper and also made other objects from black stone, such as carved yaksha figures with the Vishnupada attached, and sold them to devotees in various forms. The name Gayasisa seems to correspond with the introductory narrative of the Adittapariyaya Sutta, which says, "He dwells at Gayasisa." It probably means that the Buddha delivered that sermon at Gayasisa in the district of Gaya, that is, at the very place I visited. The story of Narayana subduing the yaksha Gaya probably arose later, after the Buddha's time, by taking the words Gayasise or Gayasisa and turning them into the story of a yaksha demon as described above.

When I went to Bodh Gaya on that occasion, I had imagined that I would have the honor of being the first Thai person to come and seek out the religion at the very place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, just as King Chulalongkorn had gone to seek out the religion at the Deer Park, where the Buddha proclaimed the establishment of Buddhism. But when I arrived at Bodh Gaya and entered the temple gate, I saw a royal Thai prayer mat from Thailand hanging there, and my pleasure immediately vanished, because some Thai monk had already arrived before me. I examined the Thai writing on the prayer mat, which gave the name as "Phra Sangkantanet came to pay homage." I knew who he was: Phra Samu Net of Wat Khruea Wan. He later became the ecclesiastical dignitary Phra Samut Muni, a monk who had been fond of wandering on pilgrimage since his youth and eventually became renowned for it. I had not expected that anyone could have made his way to Bodh Gaya in India in those days, so I was surprised. At Bodh Gaya there was only the Mahabodhi Temple, or, in Thai usage, what would be called Wat Bodhi, together with a small settlement of the Mahant Brahmins. There were no surrounding houses of ordinary inhabitants as there were at the Vishnupad Temple, because the land in that locality was owned by the Mahant Brahmins, as I shall explain later. The temple stood less than ten sen from the bank of the Neranjara River, where the Buddha is said to have floated his bowl. But when I went there, it was the dry season and the river had completely dried up; the riverbed appeared to be nothing but coarse sand. They said, however, that wherever one dug down, one would find water flowing beneath the sand. When I visited the Mahabodhi Temple, its principal feature was a large pagoda standing at the front on the eastern side. Behind the pagoda was a large carved stone slab called the "Ratana Throne," which, it was said, King Ashoka had erected at the place where the Buddha sat when he attained enlightenment, near the foot of the Bodhi tree. Beyond the throne was the Bodhi tree itself, surrounded by a masonry enclosure. When I went there, its trunk was about four cubits in girth. No one knew how many generations it was descended from the original Bodhi tree beneath which the Buddha attained enlightenment. All that was known was that its lineage had been propagated from the original Bodhi tree at this same place down to the present day. The temple grounds extended as a level square area for about two sen, enclosed by a wall. Beyond the wall there were still continuous mounds of earth, some high and some low. The Archaeological Department had not yet excavated them.

Regarding the history of the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya, prior to the reign of Emperor Ashoka, although it had been a place where Buddhists went to pay homage ever since the Buddha entered Parinirvana, no structures dating before B.E. 200 (c. 343 BCE) have been found. The oldest relics discovered date only from the time of Emperor Ashoka, who is said to have built the Vajrasana (Diamond Throne) and a small shrine in front of the Bodhi tree for pilgrims to worship. Later, as Buddhism flourished and spread across India, faithful devotees progressively added sacred monuments and various decorative elements over time. Examining the stylistic motifs of different periods, scholars deduced that Indian devotees continued to restore the site until around B.E. 1500 (c. 957 CE), shortly before Buddhism was eradicated from India. However, regarding the restoration of the main structure—namely the central Prang tower that stands as the principal monument of the temple today—they hypothesize that around B.E. 500 (c. 43 BCE), when making Buddha images became popular, someone enlarged and converted Emperor Ashoka's shrine, which originally served merely as a place to worship the Holy Bodhi tree, into a larger sanctuary to house Buddha statues as well. Later, in the 1000s B.E. (c. 5th-6th century CE), a great Brahmin named Amardeva, royal chaplain to King Vikramaditya of Malwa, converted to Buddhism with deep faith and converted that shrine into the main Prang tower that still stands today. Its architectural form differs from all other stupas in India, likely because the Brahmin Amardeva had previously followed Brahmanism and favored Hindu temple architecture, thus blending features of Hindu temples with Buddhist stupas—making the top into a stupa, the middle into a spire-tower (prang), and the bottom into a shrine hall housing the principal Buddha image. It is therefore quite unique compared to other sites. Built entirely of brick and mortar, it is square in shape and stands 30 wa high to the top. The lower section forming the shrine hall is 8 wa wide and over 4 wa high, featuring a vaulted niche housing a principal Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture with a lap width of about 3 sok. Inside the walls of the shrine hall, a stairway leads up to the roof, which is constructed as a flat terrace—a circumambulatory court surrounding the large central Prang, with four smaller corner spires at the four corners of the terrace. The main Prang is square, tapering toward the top, adorned with arched niches housing Buddha images arranged in 9 tiers around the tower, capped at the very summit by a round stupa. When it was newly built, it must have been a strikingly beautiful and unusual sight.

When the time came when Buddhism was being destroyed and uprooted in India by people of false beliefs, many Indians who followed Buddhism fled to seek refuge with the kings of Burma at Pagan, who were great patrons of Buddhism. They must have reported to King Kyanzittha, the third great king, about the Buddhist holy sites in India. He became deeply devoted and had the Bodh Gaya pagoda restored around B.E. 1655. Later, King Alaungsithu, the fourth great king, had it restored again. And King Tilominlo, the ninth great king, had a copy made of the Bodh Gaya pagoda and ordered one to be built at Pagan around B.E. 1753. This story eventually reaches Thailand as well, because there is an ancient laterite-built pagoda at Chiang Mai known as the "Seven-Spired Pagoda," whose form is modeled on the Bodh Gaya pagoda. I have seen both the one at Bodh Gaya and the one at Pagan, so I can confidently say that the one at Chiang Mai must have been copied from the one at Pagan, merely reduced somewhat in size. It was probably built before B.E. 1800, when Chiang Mai was still a dependency of the king of Pagan. Perhaps a prince of the Pagan dynasty came to rule there (possibly the one who married Lady Chamadevi), brought the model of the pagoda from Pagan, and built it with such fine workmanship. This further suggests that the Chiang Mai chronicles, which say that King Mangrai founded Chiang Mai in B.E. 1839, are referring in fact to the establishment of the city on the site of an old, abandoned city, rather than in a wilderness. The story of the Bodh Gaya pagoda continues. In B.E. 2420, five years after King Chulalongkorn's visit to India, King Mindon of Burma wished to perform meritorious deeds following the example of the Burmese kings of old, and had permission sought from the British government to restore the Bodh Gaya pagoda once again. But the Burmese restoration on this occasion has continued to be criticized by British archaeologists to this day as having done more to destroy the monument than to restore it. The Burmese officials conceived the idea of building a wall around the site and leveling the temple grounds. They dismantled and removed most of the ancient carved stonework that had been built in the area and carried it away to be discarded. They also went around dismantling bricks from nearby ancient sites and used them to build the new temple wall, thereby making the destruction even worse. Even on the pagoda itself, they chipped away the surviving original stucco ornamentation, filled the damaged areas with plaster, and coated the entire structure with whitewash. That was all they accomplished. Later, perhaps because the Indian government realized that it had erred in allowing the Burmese to restore the monument without supervision, or perhaps because the archaeologists had strongly criticized the work, the governor of Bengal therefore ordered the pagoda to be restored once more. The entire structure was neatly replastered and finished. It must have been completed not long before my visit, for it still looked new, and there was a stone inscription recording the work, though I cannot remember the year in which the restoration was carried out.

When I arrived at the Bodh Gaya Temple, the Mahant Brahmins came out to welcome me. After I had worshipped the Buddha image and toured the entire temple grounds, they invited me to rest at the house of the chief Mahant Brahmin, where they conducted a welcoming ceremony, placing garlands on me and serving refreshments. The Mahabodhi Temple had far more ancient stone carvings remaining than Mrigadayavana, which the Mahant Brahmins had collected and used to decorate various spots. Whenever I saw something unusual and asked for it, they willingly granted it without hesitation. I selected only four or five small, unique items that were easy to carry back; some turned out to be significant artifacts, as I shall recount elsewhere. As for how the Mahant Brahmins came to own the Bodh Gaya Temple, it appears that over 200 years ago, when the British East India Company was expanding its control into the Middle Country of India, they instituted an administrative system of land distribution to pro-British Indians who possessed sufficient means and power to manage the land. These landholders were called Zamindars, holding territories of varying sizes, required to govern according to British law and pay tribute to the Indian Government according to agreed terms. As long as a Zamindar fulfilled their contract, the government granted their descendants the same perpetual rights. At the time this system was established, the Bodh Gaya area was a deserted jungle inhabited only by the Mahant Brahmins. The chief Brahmin was appointed Zamindar governing the Bodh Gaya district, and his hereditary successors inherited these rights down through the generations. Since the Bodh Gaya Temple lay within the land domain of the Mahant Brahmins, they considered themselves managers of the temple, preserving it as a shrine under their own Vaishnavite tradition.

On that occasion, I happened to learn about the founding of the Maha Bodhi Society, which was connected with the sacred site at Bodh Gaya, so I shall relate it here as well. After leaving Gaya, I stayed in Calcutta. A young Ceylonese named Dharmapala came to see me together with a Burmese merchant. Mr. Dharmapala said that they intended to revive Buddhism in India and restore it to the position it had held in former times. Their plan was to establish the great sacred site at Bodh Gaya as their center and invite Buddhists of every nation and language to cooperate in teaching Buddhism so that it would again have a widespread following in India. They would then maintain and restore the various Buddhist sacred sites, so that Buddhism might once again become a major religion in India, and make the center a meeting place for Buddhists from throughout the world. At that time several Ceylonese and Burmese had already joined him, so they formed an association called the Maha Bodhi Society, after the name of the great stupa at Bodh Gaya, which they intended to make the center of the Buddhist revival. But one obstacle arose. The Mahants claimed that the land at Bodh Gaya, including the great sacred site, belonged to them. They would not allow the Maha Bodhi Society to establish a center there, and they would not even sell the particular area occupied by the temple. Mr. Dharmapala came to me because he regarded Thailand as an important Buddhist country and me as one of its princes, hoping that I would help him approach the Viceroy of India and ask him to use the authority of the government to compel the Mahants to hand the Mahabodhi Temple, a Buddhist temple, back to the Buddhists as it had formerly been. I replied that I was pleased to hear of their plan to revive Buddhism in India and wished them well, but I could not undertake to speak to the Viceroy about the Mahabodhi Temple. That was an internal matter of India. I was a foreigner and a guest of the government, and it would not be proper for me to intervene by making requests concerning the internal affairs of the country. I went on to say that the Dhamma itself was the essence of the religion; bricks and mortar were not important. The Dhamma could be taught anywhere. Why, then, begin the revival of Buddhism by starting a dispute over a temple? It seemed entirely unnecessary. Mr. Dharmapala was evidently dissatisfied with my answer, and our conversation ended there. Later, Mr. Dharmapala came to Bangkok and gave several lectures inviting the Thais to cooperate. But it seems that he received little money from Thailand, because not many people understood his lectures in English. Even among those who did understand, few admired Mr. Dharmapala's manner, because he liked to use rhetoric that stirred resentment against the people of wrong views who had tried to destroy Buddhism for more than seven hundred years. This made his intention to revive Buddhism seem more like a desire for revenge against the people of wrong views than an effort to make merit, and people were consequently not very inclined to support him. When Mr. Dharmapala traveled around the various Buddhist countries seeking assistance and had obtained enough money to serve as capital, he used the name of the Maha Bodhi Society to sue the Mahants for eviction in the court at Calcutta. The court ruled against the Maha Bodhi Society, on the grounds that the Mahants had held and administered the land for several hundred years and that they had also cared for the Bodh Gaya temple, regarding it as a temple belonging to their own religion. Mr. Dharmapala therefore failed to obtain Bodh Gaya as he had hoped and moved his center to Mrigadayavan in Benares. Since the temple grounds at Mrigadayavan apparently belonged to the state, he received support from the Indian government. The Maha Bodhi Society was able to establish a center there and build a new temple called the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara. Later, after establishing friendly relations with the Mahants, they agreed to let the Maha Bodhi Society build accommodation for Buddhists near the Bodh Gaya temple. Thus two centers for Buddhists were established in India, providing accommodation for Buddhists of every nation. Thai monks who traveled there were able to stay at them, as they still do today. In this way Mr. Dharmapala achieved as much of his aim of reviving Buddhism as was possible. His faith and perseverance deserve the highest admiration. For more than thirty years he persisted, even giving up his property and home and becoming a wanderer, calling himself an Anagarika, devoting himself entirely to reviving Buddhism in India. He traveled throughout countries large and small around the world, persuading people to help. Once he had succeeded and established centers for Buddhists in India, Mr. Dharmapala was ordained as a monk and remained one until his death. He should certainly be regarded as a kind of hero.

Several years before my visit to India—likely around B.E. 2428 (1885)—when Prince Naresra Varariddhi was serving as the Thai Minister in London, news reached Bangkok that the Indian Government had discovered the Buddha's holy relics in an ancient stupa and sent them to the British Museum in London. When Prince Naresra returned to Bangkok, Somdet Phra Maha Samana Chao Krom Phraya Pavares Variyalongkorn asked him what the Buddha's relics discovered by the British looked like. Prince Naresra replied that he had not gone to examine them, whereupon Somdet Phra Pavares lamented that Prince Naresra paid no attention to Buddhism. When I traveled to Europe and arrived in London prior to going to India, I remembered that story. On the day I visited the museum, I asked the officials to show me the Buddha's relics brought from India. Seeing them filled me with astonishment, for those so-called relics were human bones rather than the stone-like relics venerated in Thailand. I saw that the relics they had obtained were quite substantial—about a handful. I thought that if I were to ask for a few pieces to bring back to Thailand, the British Government would likely grant them. I thus asked the museum official what evidence existed to prove they were the Buddha's relics. The official—who was an archaeologist—explained that the cloth wrapping the relics bore an inscription explicitly identifying them as the Buddha's relics, going on to note that the script was of a style used in India around the 6th century AD, or in other words, the script used in India around B.E. 1000 (c. 500 CE). Hearing this made me hesitate, for the date suggested that the relics were likely handed down through many generations and believed through tradition to be the Buddha's relics for a thousand years before being enshrined in the stupa where the British found them. Furthermore, the quantity of the relics seemed far too large for any great king, such as Emperor Ashoka, to have distributed to any single person or enshrined in a single stupa in such volume. It seemed more likely to be the work of later devout laypersons who collected relics found in collapsed stupas from various places—all claimed to be the Buddha's relics—and enshrined them together, which would account for such a large quantity. I could not be certain that they were all truly the Buddha's relics. I reflected that in Thailand, where we venerate stone-like relics following the Sri Lankan tradition, even if they were not genuine relics, it amounted to nothing worse than worshiping stones; but Indian relics were human bones, and if the pieces I requested were not the Buddha's relics, I would end up inviting Thais to bow down before the bones of someone unknown. I therefore abandoned the idea of requesting the relics from London. When I arrived in India, whichever museum I visited, I made a point of examining the relics found in India displayed across all those museums, eventually coming to the conclusive realization that the relics found in India were all human bones. Some had cloth wrappings inscribed as the Buddha's relics, while others were labeled as relics of Sariputta or Moggallana. Yet doubts remained, for supporting evidence—such as the script style or objects enshrined alongside the relics like coins—all dated to fully 1,000 years after the Buddha's time. There was an additional reason for my aversion: considering the volume of relics present across every museum, if one were to combine all those claimed to be the Buddha's relics, the Buddha would have had to be impossibly enormous in size, far beyond human proportions. Finding no relics beyond suspicion, I brought no holy relics back from India on that trip.

I have already related that upon my arrival in Gaya, Mr. Grierson, the Magistrate of Gaya, had prepared three Sri Maha Bodhi saplings for me. Initially, I thought of declining them, considering that the saplings were still so young they would likely die along the journey. But then I reflected that Thailand had never before acquired Sri Maha Bodhi saplings directly from the original tree at Bodh Gaya, so it was worth trying once to see if they might survive—and if they perished on the way, so be it. I therefore had a glass-backed wooden box crafted to hold the three potted saplings and brought them along with me. En route, when I saw the Bodhi saplings sprouting fresh green leaves, I was filled with joy at the prospect of being the first to bring Sri Maha Bodhi saplings directly from Bodh Gaya into Thailand.

All the Sri Maha Bodhi trees that have existed in Thailand since ancient times are descendants of the tree that King Ashoka sent to be planted at Anuradhapura in Ceylon. The latest account in the Rattanakosin chronicles says that during the reign of King Rama II, Phra Acharn Thep, head of the Thai monastic mission, returned from Ceylon in Buddhist Era 2361 with three Bodhi trees from Anuradhapura, which he presented to King Rama II. The king ordered one to be planted at Wat Mahathat, one at Wat Suthat, and one at Wat Saket. They still remain today. But the lineage of the Sri Maha Bodhi trees in Thailand that came directly from Bodh Gaya was only established during the reign of King Rama IV. King Mongkut studied and learned about Buddhist monuments in India before anyone else and made efforts to obtain a lineage of the Sri Maha Bodhi from Bodh Gaya. Seeds were brought to Thailand for the first time. Chao Phraya Thiphakornwong wrote in the chronicle of the reign of Rama IV, in the section concerning the restoration of Phra Pathom Chedi (printed edition, p. 441), that the Bodhi trees which the king ordered to be planted at the four corners of the grounds "came from Bodh Gaya city and were said to be shoots of the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The Mahabodhi was surrounded by seven layers of galleries, and the Brahmins guarded it closely. The governor, that is, the English Viceroy, therefore went to ask for the seeds and leaves and sent them as an offering." He continued that King Mongkut germinated the seeds of the Sri Maha Bodhi into trees and presented them for planting at royal temples. He did not say which temples, but as I remember them now, one remains at Wat Mahathat, in front of the Bodhilanka Vihara; one at Wat Bowonniwet; four at Phra Pathom Chedi. There is a further account that King Mongkut divided the Bodh Gaya Sri Maha Bodhi seeds he had received on that occasion and presented them to King Chulalongkorn, who also germinated them. During the reign of Rama V, the king ordered these Bodh Gaya Sri Maha Bodhi trees to be planted at Wat Thepsirin, one at Wat Niwet Thammaprawat, one at Wat Upha Ratchabamrung, that is, the Vietnamese temple at Talat Noi, and one was presented to Chao Phraya Yommarat (Choei, of the Yomaphai family) to plant at Wat Mani Chon Khan in Lopburi.

When I returned to Bangkok, I presented the Sri Maha Bodhi saplings brought from Bodh Gaya to King Chulalongkorn at Koh Sichang. At that time, Wat Asdangkhanimit was under construction, and the King ordered one sapling planted at Wat Asdangkhanimit, while the other two were set in a nursery within the royal palace grounds on Koh Sichang. Later, when Wat Benchamabophit was built, he ordered one transferred and planted at Wat Benchamabophit; as for the remaining sapling, whether it still stands on Koh Sichang or what became of it, I do not know.

At the Mahabodhi Temple, I found a stone carving representing the right Buddha's footprint, a little over one sok in length. Observing it carefully, I could see it was very ancient, likely dating back to the time of Emperor Ashoka or not long thereafter. There is clear evidence that prior to B.E. 500 (c. 43 BCE), it was forbidden in India to create Buddha images; various holy sites that carved stone reliefs depicting the Life of the Buddha would substitute other symbols wherever a Buddha image was called for. Before the Enlightenment, the Buddha was usually represented by footprints; at the moment of Enlightenment, by the throne and the Bodhi tree; when proclaiming the Dhamma, by the Wheel of Dhamma and deer; and upon entering Parinirvana, by a stupa. It was only after more than 500 years had passed since the Buddha's time that the Yonas (Greeks who converted to Buddhism) in Gandhara along India's northwestern frontier conceived the creation of Buddha statues, a practice later adopted by other Indian peoples, thus giving rise to Buddha images ever since. That Buddha footprint was undoubtedly created for veneration as a substitute for the Buddha during the era before Buddha images existed. When I requested it, the Mahant (chief Brahmin) willingly gave it to me, so I presented it to King Chulalongkorn as another offering. His Majesty graciously ordered that Buddha footprint enshrined in a mandapa atop Mount Phra Chula Chom Klao on Ko Sichang.

When I was searching for antiquities connected with Buddhism, the officials of the Archaeological Department of the Indian government were very helpful. They would give me antiquities, such as Buddha images, that had not yet been sent to museums whenever I found something I wanted. But I had to be considerate toward them and took only a reasonable number. I obtained one Gupta-period Buddha image in the walking posture, dating from around Buddhist Era 1000, from Mrigadayavan. I also obtained the Buddha footprint mentioned earlier, together with several other objects from Bodh Gaya, including Buddha images and small stupas. I presented all these objects to the king. At first he ordered them to be kept at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha; later they were moved to the museum, where they all remain. There is one Buddha image that deserves special mention. When I was about to return from Bodh Gaya, I told an official of the Archaeological Department that I had observed that the ancient Buddha images in India came in many different styles. I wanted to see a Buddha image regarded as the finest example of craftsmanship found in India and asked whether he could obtain a photograph for me. He promised to look for one and send it to me if he found one. Two or three months after I returned to Bangkok, he sent me a Buddha image, saying that the Indian government was giving it to me as a keepsake. But it was not a photograph as I had requested. It was a Buddha image about one sok across the lap, a plaster cast of a stone original, gilded with gold leaf and placed in a wooden shrine shaped like a glass pavilion to hold the image securely, then packed in a crate and shipped to me. The image represented the Buddha while still a Bodhisattva, practicing extreme asceticism. A Yavana craftsman in Gandhara conceived and made it around Buddhist Era 900. It depicts him seated in meditation, but he is so emaciated that, as the saying goes, "there is only skin covering the bones." The skeleton and sinews are visibly rendered with extraordinary realism, unlike ordinary Buddha images. One immediately recognizes it as the Buddha striving to attain liberation. It is wonderfully executed. I was told that this image was considered outstanding both in conception and in the skill of the Yavana craftsman, and that only this one had been found. The government preserved it in a museum at Lahore, but I did not travel that far and therefore never saw the original. When the image arrived in Bangkok, I was still living at the old palace near Damrong Sathit Bridge. By chance, Phra Buddhacharn (Ma) of Wat Chakrawat Rachawat, who was then Phra Mongkol Thipmuni, came to see me. As soon as he saw it, he became deeply impressed, saying that it was an extraordinary and fascinating Buddha image, unlike anything anyone had seen before. He asked me to place it at the palace for people to worship for three days before I presented it to the king. I agreed. I arranged a shrine and placed the image in the school hall at the palace. The next morning, people from Sampheng who had heard about it from Phra Buddhacharn began arriving, and word spread further. They called it the "Skinny Buddha." By the second and third days, more and more people came, filling the palace from morning until night. Vendors of incense, candles, and gold leaf even came to sit and sell their wares, as at a temple fair. But I asked them not to apply gold leaf to the image, because the original had already been gilded in India. On the fourth day I had to close the palace gates because people were still arriving without end.

King Chulalongkorn ordered the image to be installed on a throne in one of the ubosot-like shrines in the Buddhist Prang Prasat at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Devotees began having copies of the "Skinny Buddha" cast in bronze, and the image became widely popular in various sizes. The largest was about two sok across the lap. The image cast and presented to King Chulalongkorn is in the gallery at Wat Benchamabophit, and countless other temples have copies as well. But the original image sent from India was destroyed when the Buddhist Prang Prasat burned down during the reign of Rama V. Because devotees had already made copies, however, the "Skinny Buddha" type has survived in Thailand to this day.

I have written my observations and experiences in India as three tales in total. The first tale relates the reasons for my journey to India and describes the curious sights in Jaipur. The second tale describes the marvels of Varanasi. This third tale concerns the investigation of Buddhism in India. There are still a few details regarding the time just before returning from India that, if left unmentioned, would leave the account from the first story feeling incomplete; hence, I have appended this final section to this story.

I left Gaya for Calcutta, which was then the capital of India. Lord Lansdowne was the Viceroy, and he received me and had me stay with him at Government House, which was more appropriately called the "Viceroy's Palace" than a government residence. One evening there was a dinner with senior officials in my honor. On another day there was a social gathering where I met distinguished Europeans and Indians. Lord Roberts, who at that time was still Sir Frederick Roberts, the commander-in-chief of all the forces in India, invited me to dinner with the officers at Fort William one evening. After staying in Calcutta for four days, I went to Darjeeling in the Himalayan mountains, or, in the old Thai expression, went to see the Himavanta forest, for four days. I then returned to Calcutta, boarded a ship, and left India for Burma, which at that time was still considered part of the Indian Empire. I stayed at the governor's residence with Sir Alexander Mackenzie, the governor of Burma. But I reached Burma at the beginning of March, when the hot season had already begun. I myself had been traveling in Europe and India for nine months and had seen so many things that I could scarcely remember them all. When I encountered the hot weather, I became tired of traveling and stayed in Rangoon for only four days. I went to worship the hair relic and visited other sights in the city. Then I boarded a boat and passed through Tavoy, seeing only the river mouth, without going up to the town because I was told it lay far inland. I did, however, stop to go ashore and see Myeik, then continued to Ranong. From there I traveled overland across the mountains and boarded the royal vessel that had come to meet me at Chumphon, returning to Bangkok. That was the end of my journey to India.
