1. Hiirten apu.

    The Help of the Mice.

  2. Sattuipa kerran karhu tarttumaan metsämiehen ansaan.

It so happened once that a bear got caught in a hunter's trap.

Slender was the cord, but tied to strong trees, so that the bear was indeed stuck fast in the trap.

  4. No hän, kun ei päässyt, nukahti siihen.

Well, since he couldn't get free, he fell asleep right there.

A bunch of mice came along and began playing games around the bear.

The bear woke up at that, snatched half a dozen of the gamboling little creatures in his paw, and was about to pop them all into his mouth at once.

  7. -- Elä, veikkonen, elä meitä syö, me teemme sinulle vielä joskus hyvän työn, valittivat ja rukoilivat hiiret.

“Don't, brother, don't eat us; we will do you a good turn someday,” prayed and pleaded the mice.

  8. -- Huih, teistäkö hyväntyön tekijöiksi, hymähti pilkallisesti karhu.

“Bah, you, do a good turn?” scoffed the bear mockingly.

“But since you really are so insignificantly small, I won't eat you; you may go wherever you wish.”

  10. Ja samassa hän viskasi heidät loitos luotaan.

And with that, he tossed them far away from him.

  11. Ja nukahti taas.

    And fell asleep again.

But when he woke up, he noticed he was free.

  13. Lanka oli keritetty.

The cord had been gnawed through.

  14. -- No, kukas tämän teki!

    “Well, who did this!”

  15. kysäsi hän tyhmän-ällistyneesti.

    he asked in foolish amazement.

  16. -- Me, vastasivat äsken vapautetut hiiret siitä lähitienoolta.

“We did,” answered the recently freed mice from nearby.

  17. Me nakertelimme solmun auki, teimme sen lupaamamme hyvän työn.

“We gnawed the knot open, we did that good turn we promised.”

  18. -- Vai te, vai teitte te sen lupaamanne hyvän työn, lausui karhu hämmästyneen-nolostuneella äänellä ja lähti lönkkimään pois.

“So it was you, so you did that good turn you promised,” said the bear in an astonished and embarrassed voice, and ambled away.

  19. Sen pituinen se.

And that was the end of that story.

  20. Buden laulu.

    Bude's Song.

  21. Kerran susi tapasi koiran ja sanoi tälle:

Once a wolf met a dog and said to him:

  22. -- Nyt veikkonen toimita kuinka tahansa minulle jotain syötävää, minulla on semmoinen nälkä!

“Now, brother, no matter how you do it, get me something to eat—I am so hungry!”

  23. Koira sanoi:

    The dog said:

“Well, there's a wedding at the house, and I could easily lead you through the crowd under the banquet table, where there is plenty of everything, but you must be so quiet, so quiet, that not a peep is heard, otherwise things will go badly.”

  25. -- Ole, veikkonen, minäkö en olisi hiljaa!

“Come on, brother, as if I wouldn't be quiet!”

  26. Kuinka sitä kysytkään!

“As if you have to ask!”

  27. -- No, tule sitten!

    “Well, come along then!”

The dog set off to lead the wolf under the banquet table and managed to get him there.

And there was, just as the dog had said, all kinds of things in abundance, and the wolf began to devour them greedily.

But there was also in a bowl some strong drink, and the wolf took a swig of it to wash down the food.

  31. Ryyppäsipä muutenkin.

And he kept on drinking besides.

  32. Mutta siitä tuli hän kovaan humalaan.

But that made him heavily drunk.

  33. Ja hän tahtoi kaikinmokomin laulaa -- häiden kunniaksi.

And by all means he wanted to sing—in honor of the wedding.

  34. Mitäs, kun muutkin laulavat!

“What of it, when the others are singing too!”

  35. Koira varotteli:

    The dog warned:

“Don't, brother, don't, brother, that could lead to ruin!”

  37. Elä hiiskahdakaan!

    “Don't make a peep!”

  38. -- Vielä mitä, -- mitkä turmiot siitä!

“Nonsense—what ruin would come of that!”

  39. Laulan kuin laulaakin!

“I'm going to sing come what may!”

  40. -- Elä laula, minä sanon vakavasti!

“Don't sing, I'm telling you seriously!”

But what did the wolf care in such wedding fervor; he sang so that the cottage echoed.

But alas for the wolf's fate because of that song.

The wedding guests, interrupting their celebration, suddenly grabbed clubs in their hands and began to thrash the wolf so that his bones cracked.

And the poor wolf got such a severe beating for his song that his back has been stiff from it to this very day.
