The Hare's Wisdom.

Kerran jänis osotti aito kettumaista viisautta ja vieläpä ollessa ketun kera asiassa.

Once, a hare showed true fox-like wisdom, and that too while dealing with a fox.

Tavatessaan toisensa asettivat he itselleen erään määräpaikan ja löivät vetoa, kumpi heistä ennemmin hyppäisi sen toiselle puolelle.

When they met, they set a certain target spot for themselves and laid a wager on which of them would jump to the other side first.

Se joka ennemmin hyppää, se saa osuuden toisen valtakuntaan.

Whoever jumps first shall win a share in the other's realm.

Kettu sanoi:

The fox said:

-- Jokos sitä koetellaan?

“Shall we test it now?”

Jänis virkkoi:

The hare replied:

-- Elähän vielä, annahan kun tässä ensin vähän ajattelen.

“Not just yet, let me think a little first.”

-- No ajattele, ajattele sitten, eläkä lorvaile!

“Well, think then, think, and don't dawdle!”

-- No, no, ajattelenhan tässä parast'aikaa!

“Now, now, I am thinking right this moment!”

Sitä ajattelua odotellessaan kääntyi kettu jotakin katsomaan.

While waiting for that thinking, the fox turned to look at something.

Silloin jänis virkahti että

Then the hare uttered,

"jo ajattelin!"

"I'm done thinking!"

ja hypätä kopsautti määräviivan toiselle puolelle ja sai osuuden ketun valtakuntaan.

and leaped right over the finish line, winning a share in the fox's realm.
