Suuret syömäjuhlat.
The Great Feast.
-
Once upon a time, the bear and the wolf wanted to hold a truly great feast, just the two of them, without the fox, without anyone else.
-
Tappoivat he sitä varten pari kolme lehmää ja määräsivät juhlapäivän.
For that purpose, they killed two or three cows and set a date for the feast.
-
Kettu kun sai kuulla tuosta, päätti tehdä kuomaksille pienen kepposen, eikä aivan pientäkään: pilata kokonaan kuomaksien pito-ilot ja päästä itse niiden pääosakkaaksi.
When the fox heard about this, he decided to play a little trick on his companions—and not such a small one either: to completely spoil their party and become the main guest himself.
-
For this, he took a cat into his service—an exceedingly grumbling and fierce-looking cat—and once he had done so, he went to the organizers of the feast and said:
-
“I would come to the feast too, but I have a guest such that I dare not come with him!”
-
-- Mikä vieras se on, minkänäköinen se on?
“What kind of guest is that, what does he look like?”
-
kysäsivät pitojen valmistajat kohottaen korviaan.
asked the feast makers, pricking up their ears.
-
-- No ompahan semmoinen mokoma, ei kovin suuri, eikä kovin pienikään, sellainen pitkäviiksi, pitkähäntä marrittaja.
“Well, he's a fellow of sorts, not very big, nor very small, a long-whiskered, long-tailed grumbler.
-
En minä hänestä muuten välittäisi, vaan sillä kun on se ääni sellainen, -- jotta kerrassaan luonnon ottaa!
Otherwise I wouldn't mind him, but he has such a voice—that it simply curdles one's spirit!”
-
-- No tuohan hänet tänne juhlaamme, niin emmeköhän tuosta selvinne!
“Well, bring him here to our feast, and surely we shall manage with him!”
-
“After all, we've seen all kinds of long-tails here, so surely we can endure this one too,” boasted the feast organizers, and invited the fox and his guest to their feast.
-
Tuli sitten pitojen alkamishetki ja karhu ja susi saapuivat juhla-asuissa pitopaikalle.
Then came the moment for the feast to begin, and the bear and the wolf arrived at the site dressed in their holiday finery.
-
At first, they thought they would dig into the meal right away, but then they remembered their agreement with the fox and began to wait for their guests.
-
Asettuivat ylen mahtaviin asentoihin pitopöydän taa ja kävivät silmäilemään kankaalle, mistä päin piti vieraiden tulla.
They struck grandly impressive poses behind the banquet table and began gazing out over the heath, from where the guests were supposed to come.
-
Before long, the crackling of twigs and the thud of footsteps began to be heard from the heath.
-
“There they come,” the waiters said to each other and adjusted their posture.
-
Onpa lysti nähdä, mikä pöpö sieltä tulee, tuumivat he hetken päästä pilkallisesti toisilleen.
“It'll be fun to see what sort of bugbear comes out of there,” they remarked mockingly to each other a moment later.
-
Kettu ja kissa lähenivät.
The fox and the cat were approaching.
-
The cat was not yet visible, but the fox's triangular head and erect ears were already flashing from between the trees.
-
“Well, he certainly isn't very big, since he can't be seen yet even though the fox can already be seen,” the waiting pair mused to each other and chuckled mockingly once more.
-
But at that moment, a strange, drawn-out, foul-sounding growl began to be heard from the heath, somewhat resembling the croaking of a frog, long-drawn and strangely hushing and growing louder.
-
It already touched the hearts of the bear and the wolf a little—touched them and startled them—and they were already pondering to each other what kind of creature that might really be!
-
No, eihän he sentään vielä malttiaan menettäneet.
Well, they hadn't lost their composure just yet.
-
Mutta samassa kissa ilmestyy heidän näkyviinsä, -- tuo pitkäviiksinen, pitkähäntäinen, pahasti mariseva olento.
But all at once, the cat appears in their view—that long-whiskered, long-tailed, wickedly grumbling creature.
-
Lähestyy selkänsä korkeaan köyryyn nostaen ja maristen mitä surkeimmalla äänellä ja samalla mitä ilkeimmästi irvistäen ja väliin sylkeä sähistäen.
It approaches with its back arched high, grumbling in the most miserable voice while making the nastiest grimaces and occasionally spitting and hissing.
-
Then a wave of dread truly touches the hearts of the bear and the wolf, and even their majestic posture vanishes as they begin to look at each other very strangely.
-
Lempo, tämä taitaa ollakin eri otus, arvelevat he.
“Good grief, this might be a different kind of beast altogether,” they reckon.
-
Ja kun kissa alkaa sitten, heihin tiukasti tuijotellen, yhä lähestyä heitä, astua vakain askelin juhlapöytää kohti, ja kun kettu vielä jättäytyy hiukan jälelle, niin jopa eivät juhlanpitäjät kestä paikoillaan, vaan hyökkäävät kumpikin pakoon, toinen pitkään puuhun, toinen suuren risukasaan, unohtaen juhlansa, pöytänsä.
And when the cat then, staring intently at them, continues to approach, stepping with steady paces toward the feast table, and with the fox lagging a bit behind, the hosts can no longer stand their ground, but both bolt to flee—one up a tall tree, the other into a large pile of brushwood—forgetting their feast and their table.
-
Eivätkä uskalla piilopaikoissaan hiiskahtaa.
And they do not dare to utter a peep in their hiding places.
-
This makes the fox laugh heartily, but he wants to make his enjoyment even more complete.
-
Therefore he points out the wolf's twitching ear in the brush pile to the cat, and when the cat sees it, it immediately rushes toward it.
-
But the wolf's spirit cannot bear that, and seeing the cat approach, he suddenly lunges out of his hiding place and rushes up the same tree where the bear had gone.
-
However, this frightens the bear so much that he rushes down from his tree and collides with the wolf so hard that they both tumble down.
-
And having fallen, they both flee into the forest with terrifying speed, never to return.
-
So the whole grand feast table was left to the fox and the cat, and the fox's hope of becoming the main guest at this great feast came true.
-
Semmoinen satu se!
And that is how the tale goes!
