Jäniksen itsemurha-aie.
The Hare's Intention of Suicide.
-
But a deep melancholy once overcame the young hare, and he said to himself:
-
-- Ei minua sentään kukaan pelkää!
"No one is afraid of me, after all!
-
Kyllä minun mahtini on mitätöntä.
My power is truly worthless.
-
Ja sentähden: mitä maksaa elellä täällä, menenpä ja hukutan itseni tuonne jokeen.
And so: what is the point of living here? I will go and drown myself in that river over there."
-
But having reached the riverbank, he heard someone jump into the water in front of him.
-
-- Mikä se?
"What was that?
-
Who was it that jumped into the river ahead of me in such a rush?
-
Well, look, a beetle! Well, I won't drown myself after all, when even that beetle is so afraid of me that it jumps into the river in such a hurry ahead of me—not a chance!" said the hare to himself.
-
And he turned away from the riverbank and goes on living and nibbling even today.
