The Rabbit's Power.

Kerran kettu tapasi taas jäniksen ja sanoi hänelle:

Once, the fox met the rabbit again and said to him:

-- On siinäkin mies, jota ei kukaan pelkää.

“There’s a fellow no one is afraid of.”

-- Kukas sinua sitten pelkää?

“And who is afraid of you, then?”

pöyhisteli jänis.

the rabbit puffed himself up.

-- Voi veikkonen, kaikki, vastasi mahtavasti kettu.

“Oh brother, everyone,” the fox replied grandly.

Minä kun vain tätä häntääni näytän, niin kaikki lentävät ken minne kerkiää.

“Why, if I just show this tail of mine, everyone scatters as fast as they can.”

Mutta sinua -- milläs sinä pelotat?

“But you -- what do you scare them with?”

-- No lyödään vetoa, kummalla meistä on suurempi mahti, virkkoi jänis.

“Well, let's make a bet on which of us has greater power,” said the rabbit.

-- Lyödään vain.

“Let's do it.”

The bet was made, and they set off walking along the road.

Then a flock of sheep came into view, and the rabbit, realizing he had a fine opportunity to show his power, suddenly leaped right into the middle of the flock and let out a dreadful noise.

The timid flock of sheep was terribly startled by this and scattered every which way.

So the rabbit had won the bet, and out of sheer delight he burst into such laughter that his mouth split crisscross.
