Korpin laulu.
The Raven's Song.
-
A fox had been walking again for many days without getting a bite to eat, and he was very hungry and downcast.
-
Sattuupa hän silloin tulemaan erään ahon laitaan, jonka eräässä puussa istua kekottaa suuri korppi, iso juustopala suussa.
He happened to come then to the edge of a clearing, where in a tree perched a large raven, a big piece of cheese in its mouth.
-
The fox's mouth watered and he began to ponder how he might get that piece of cheese.
-
Heittäytyy hän silloin polvilleen puunjuurelle aholle, ottaa kasvoilleen mitä makeimman ilmeen ja käy mitä herkimmillä hännän häilyttelyillä sanojaan säestäen puhumaan korpille:
He then threw himself to his knees at the foot of the tree in the clearing, put on the sweetest expression on his face, and began to speak to the raven, accompanying his words with the gentlest swishing of his tail:
-
“Oh, my little raven cousin, how beautiful and wonderful you are; nothing, absolutely nothing can compare to your plumage, your garb, or your whole being.
-
But what your voice might be like, what your song might be like, I have no idea—how sweet, how lovely it must be.
-
Sentähden, serkkukultaiseni, laulappas tässä lyhyt laulu, anna armas heimolaiseni, armaan äänesi kaikua!
Therefore, my dear cousin, do sing a short song here, let your beloved voice ring out, my dear kinsman!”
-
Korppi ei voi kyllin ihmetellä tätä puhetta.
The raven could not marvel enough at this speech.
-
Mitä tuo pitkähäntä tarkottaa, ajattelee hän.
What does that long-tail mean, it thought.
-
Narraako vai todella ylistelee?
Is he fooling me or really praising me?
-
But why would he fool me, what harm have I done to him?
-
No, he is not fooling me, but truly praising me, truly thanking me—that splendid, sincere friend.
-
And it fulfilled the fox's noble wish and sweet request: opened its large beak and began to croak out a song.
-
But right then the big piece of cheese fell from its beak, and at that instant the devout admirer had left the foot of the tree—now with the big piece of cheese in his own mouth.
