1. Susi kantelijana.

    The Wolf as the Accuser.

  2. Mahtoipa susi kerran kannella ketusta jalopeuralle, eläinten kuninkaalle.

Once, the wolf went to complain about the fox to the lion, the king of beasts.

  3. Menee hän jalopeuran luo ja sanoo:

He goes to the lion and says:

  4. -- Vou, vou, armollinen eläinten kuningas, se kettu on sellainen, että sillä on aina petos mielessä, kuje sydämessä.

"Howl, howl, merciful king of beasts, that fox is such that he always has deceit in mind and trickery in his heart.

  5. Se aina yhteisestä työstä pakenee, aina yksin raatamaan jättää.

He always flees from shared labor, always leaves one to toil alone.

  6. Tänäpäivänäkin se jätti minut yksin yhteistä muurahaiskekoa ylitöiseen aittaamme kantamaan.

Even today he left me alone to carry a shared anthill into our storehouse for overtime work.

  7. Anon tästä hänelle mitä suurinta rangaistusta.

I beg for him the greatest punishment for this."

  8. Jalopeura, joka sattui sinä päivänä olemaan vähän sairaana, suuttui kovin tämän kuultuaan.

The lion, who happened to be feeling a bit ill that day, grew very angry upon hearing this.

  9. Vai sellainen se on!

    "Is that how he is!"

he said and immediately had the fox summoned before him.

  11. Kettu tuli ja asettui nöyränä eläinten kuninkaan eteen.

The fox came and positioned himself humbly before the king of beasts.

  12. Jalopeura katsahti häneen vihaisesti ja sanoi:

The lion looked at him angrily and said:

  13. -- Vai sellainen sinä olet, vai sellainen!

"So that is how you are, is it!

  14. Vai on sinulla aina petos sydämessä, aina kuje mielessä -- vai jätit sinä taas tänäpäivänäkin tämän susikuomasi yksin yhteistä muurahaiskekoa kantamaan!

So you always have deceit in your heart and trickery in your mind—and today again you left this wolf comrade of yours alone to carry the shared anthill!

  15. Sanoppas, onko se totta?

    Tell me, is that true?"

  16. Kettu ensin säikähti tästä, mutta sitten notkisti toisen etujalkansa herra eläinten kuninkaan edessä ja lausui nöyrästi:

The fox was startled at first, but then bent one of his front legs before the lord king of beasts and said humbly:

"Yes, lord king of beasts, yes, it is true that I left him today alone to carry the shared anthill.

But I did this because I heard that the lord king of beasts had fallen so terribly ill—I went to seek a cure for his illness."

  19. -- Mitä, niinkö?

    "What, really?

  20. No löysitkö sen?

    Well, did you find it?

  21. Sano!

    Tell me!"

  22. -- Olin juuri löytämäisilläni -- saamaisillani neuvon Ahonrannan hämähäkiltä, mutta silloin tultiin minua kutsumaan tänne, tälle suden asialle.

"I was just about to find it—about to get counsel from the spider of Ahonranta, but then they came to summon me here, for this business with the wolf."

  23. -- Mene, veikkonen, aivan heti takaisin ja viivy matkallasi miten kauvan tahansa, miten kauvan vain asia vaatii, elä kuule kenenkään kutsua.

"Go, my good fellow, back right away and stay on your journey as long as it takes, as long as the matter requires, listen to no one's call.

  24. Mene, mene, ja ota tarkka selko siltä Ahorannan hämähäkiltä, miten paranisin.

Go, go, and find out precisely from that spider of Ahonranta how I might be cured."

  25. Kettu kiitti ja kumarsi, ja meni.

The fox thanked him, bowed, and left.

  26. Ketun tultua takaisin kysyi jalopeura:

When the fox returned, the lion asked:

  27. -- Mitä se sanoi?

    "What did it say?"

"It said, that spider of Ahonranta, that if this wolf were killed and skinned, and that skin placed over the sick spot, then the lord king of beasts would immediately be healed."

Upon hearing that, the wolf, who until then had stayed very faithfully by the lion's side, did not stay long, but went dashing into the forest as fast as his paws could carry him. — And after that, he never complained about the fox again.
