Beichen refused to submit. Mulan, pitying his loyalty and righteousness, could not bear to execute him, yet could not release him again either. So he blinded Beichen in both eyes, rendering his courage useless. After reporting the matter to the marshal, he sent Beichen back to his own country.

Now, Marshal Yuchi received the good news from Mulan and ordered Jiehe and Kang Li to be brought into the tent.

Yuchi Gong said to the two generals: "I, the marshal, have been ordered by the imperial edict to campaign in the north. I do not seek your country's land — I only wish that your lord pays tribute and comes to court, and he will still remain the lord of the barbarian state. I will release the two of you to return,

"The Tang lord has abandoned virtue and forgotten kindness. My lord refuses to submit, which is why he neither comes to court nor pays tribute. If you, Marshal, can persuade the Tang lord to cede the Jizhou region to my lord, then I will surely persuade my lord to come to China and pay homage. Today's defeat was merely falling into a cunning trap. If you release us to return to our country, we will reorganize our troops and come back for a decisive battle. If we cannot win, then I am willing to urge my lord to surrender."

After hearing this, Yuchi Gong immediately ordered the two generals released. Jiehe, having been set free, escaped back to his own country, submitted a memorial to the Turkic Khan, and ceded the commander's seal to Kang He'a to take charge. Kang He'a gladly accepted it. Li Jing was displeased upon hearing this and sent orders to Mulan. If you wish to know what happened next, it will be revealed in the following chapter.
