Jingsong said: "The syllable 'A' awakens worldly people, instructing them not to indulge in wild, deluded thoughts. For example, when a person is lost in delusion with countless tangled threads of thought and the mind no longer follows its master, suddenly someone calls out his name, and he responds with a 'Yes.' This single call eliminates all thoughts, and this single response awakens the master. To cultivate the Great Way, one must constantly call and respond to oneself—hence 'A.' Though one hears the sound of 'A,' its form is not yet seen. The master is still inside the gate; he must open wide the hall door. He must not fall back asleep after waking, nor wander outside the house. He should remain in the hall with the intention of retreating and guarding his steps—hence 'Mi.' However, 'Mi' still imposes too much restraint, like tethering a monkey to a post—though it does not run wild, it still dances and leaps restlessly, just as the moon's reflection in water, stirred by fish and wind, remains elusive. Refine further until reaching Oneness. With 'Tuo,' one gains mastery: like a bright pearl placed on a crystal plate, unmoving and unshaken, present and abiding—hence 'Tuo.' 'Fo' means seeing one's original face. That which is sage and can be known is called spirit—what more is there to say? Mind, nature, life, the Way—none of these are it. At that moment, the Great Void is me, and I am the Great Void. Hence the prefix 'Namo.'"

Mulan bowed twice to express her thanks. Jingsong escorted her out of the convent gate; they bowed to each other, and she departed. Mulan led her attendants down the mountain and caught up with the commander-in-chief's main army. After traveling for many days, they passed through Yanmen Pass and arrived at Jiepai Pass, where they fired a cannon to signal and set up camp.
