O SERMÃO
THE SERMON
-
It was a day of celebration and a great pilgrimage.
-
From dawn, I was leaning over the wall of my yard, in the shade of an acacia tree where a nightingale warbled, to watch the pilgrims passing by, heading in groups toward the festival grounds.
-
Before reaching the churchyard, one passed through two arches of myrtle with flowers, from which hung flags and pennants in vivid colors.
-
At eleven o'clock in the morning, the dull murmur of the gathering could be heard at the site of the festival.
-
Few people were passing along the road now; and those who were still coming to the festival walked slowly, weary, close to the walls of the estates to shield themselves from the burning and stifling July heat.
-
Suddenly, at the bend in the road near the pine grove, the carriage of the viscountess appeared, who was, that year, the patroness of the festival.
-
Passersby stopped, leaning against the walls, and turned toward her with hats in hand, as if respectfully making way for a queen.
-
The open carriage was drawn by two English mares, snorting loudly and striking their hooves in rhythm against the fine, glittering sand of the road.
-
The coachman sat upright on the cushion, legs stretched out, with his whip raised suspended in his right hand.
-
Inside, reclined on the dark upholstery of the carriage, the viscountess smiled affably to either side, bowing her head slightly.
-
A pearl-colored parasol sheltered her from the sun.
-
In the front seat sat the abbot, a still-young abbot, cleanly shaven, dressed in a glossy cassock, a lace collar, and a satin biretta tilted slightly on the crown of his head.
-
He kept his hands crossed over his belly and his eyes fixed on the viscountess's dress, a sea-green dress with lace trimmings that fanned out before him like a fan.
-
The pilgrims only continued on their way after the carriage passed, and, looking at one another from side to side of the road, smiled triumphantly.
-
When the viscountess stepped down at the church door, a burst of fireworks crackled in the air; and I, who had not intended to attend the festival, lit a cigar and slowly made my way toward the church ground before the sermon began.
-

-
The church was decked out with valances and scarlet damask curtains, where the lights of the silver altar torches cast red reflections.
-
Outside the chancel rail, the crowd could be seen standing, packed tightly together, their gaze awestruck and lost in the temple's ostentatious decoration.
-
The high altar stone was covered with a lace-fringed cloth.
-
A wide carpet of variegated colors covered the altar platform, descended the three steps held by shiny metal rods, and extended through the main chapel up to the railing.
-
Three old priests, bent under the weight of gold-brocaded copes, sat to the side with their feet together and stretched forward.
-
There was a strong smell of incense; and in the choir, the final mournful notes of the fiddles sounded, accompanied by the organ and double bass.
-
The viscountess entered hurriedly through the side door leading to the sacristy, and knelt before the altar, her head held high and her eyes fixed on the image of Christ crucified amidst lights and floral arrangements.
-
After praying, with her hands clasped in supplication near her chest, she slowly crossed herself and sat down.
-
At that moment, a faint murmur stirred among the faithful who filled the temple.
-
O prégador apparecêra no pulpito.
The preacher had appeared in the pulpit.
-
His oval face of a gentle paleness, broad forehead, and clean-shaven beard bluish on the chin stood out against the whiteness of the embroidered cambric surplice.
-
His narrow, white hands emerged from the blued lace of his sleeves, which reached down to the roots of his fingers.
-
O abbade olhou attentamente o auditorio, e ajoelhou.
The abbot looked attentively at the congregation, and knelt.
-
He then stood up, gathered the cuffs of his surplice, adjusted his stole, cleared his throat solemnly, and lightly dabbed his handkerchief against his lips, laying it carefully aside.
-
Then, resting the palms of his hands on the pulpit rail, he leaned his torso forward and began in a faint voice:
-

“Mulierem fortem quis inveniet? Proverb. 31.”

It was the sermon of Saint Elizabeth, queen and martyr.
-
The preacher recounted the life of the saint from the time when, as a young girl in her palaces of Aragon, her chief delight was prayer and the exercise of charity.
-
Betrothed to the King of Portugal, Dom Dinis, soon her husband's romantic indiscretions embittered her betrayed heart.

“For—exclaimed the preacher, raising his arm—how often does a queen's mantle conceal a troubled heart!? In the midst of the ostentation of a palace, surrounded by all royal magnificence, daughter and wife of a king, like the great queen of Lacedaemon, quae Regis filia, Regis uxor, the holy princess had not the peace, the rest, the joy of the humble wife of a craftsman! She was a queen, Regis uxor, she was powerful, she was rich; but the principal wealth was that of her soul. The copious gold in her coffers did not have the great value of the high-carat gold of her heart—hallmarked gold, pure, without alloy, which is not worn away and consumed with use, but rather is refined and magnified through the practice of good deeds!”

Some women sobbed in emotion; and the viscountess, listening intently, closed her eyes in agreement and nodded her head affirmatively.
-
Proseguia o sermão.
The sermon continued.
-
The preacher spoke of the saint as she rushed to aid the unfortunate.
-
He related the miracle of the transformation of bread into flowers, when she was surprised by the king while going to give alms to the poor!
-
Then, extending his hands in parallel, as if trying to draw the stunned congregation into an embrace, he said:
-
“See what gold is for! Do not consider yourselves unfortunate if great riches do not favor you! Do not let envy coil itself like a cunning serpent from hell within your hearts.”
-
And, pointing his index finger toward heaven, he continued in a more solemn voice:
-
--
-
“It is there that God's providence is seen! He granted gold to the rich so that they might distribute it to the poor! To ask is neither humiliation nor shame! Jesus, the Divine Master, gave us the example, teaching His disciples to ask with humility! And what greater consolation—continued the preacher—what greater consolation than to succor with alms those whom fortune made less prosperous!? To quench hunger, satisfy thirst, clothe the naked, dry the tears of widows, shelter the orphan, give support to old age!”
-
E exclamava:
And he exclaimed:
-
--
-
«Oh! santa caridade! Oh! flôr sacrosanta do altar de Deus! A caridade...»
“Oh! holy charity! Oh! sacred flower of God's altar! Charity...”
-
And leaning back into the pulpit, arching his arms forward, bringing his hands together with the tips of his index finger and thumb delicately joined, he recited in an unctuous voice, steeped in tenderness:
-
At night the modest virgin, The chaste daughter of God, Steals away from the festival hymns, And wrapped in candid veils,
-
Descends the sumptuous staircase, Mother of the bad, sister of the good, There she goes lovingly to bestow Her gifts everywhere.
-
Foi de um effeito surprehendente!
It had an astonishing effect!
-
O auditorio sentia calefrios: passava n'elle a corrente magnetica do enthusiasmo!
The congregation felt shivers run through them: a magnetic current of enthusiasm surged through the crowd!
-
The preacher concluded in a familiar tone, with a lower voice, advising the poor to follow the example of Jesus, who wandered the world begging; and the rich to model themselves after the Holy Queen, who distributed the riches of her palace to the unfortunate.
-
--«Amen.»
—“Amen.”
-
And he exited the pulpit in a hurry, red-faced, panting, wiping with his handkerchief the copious sweat running down his forehead.

On that day, the abbot dined with the viscountess.
-
When I arrived, they had already risen from the table and were sitting on the terrace, under the shade of the striped awning.
-
Opposite the viscountess, the abbot, lounging in a broad wicker chair, was sipping his coffee in tiny swallows.
-
Cumprimentei o prégador pelo sermão; e a sr.^a viscondessa, levantando enthusiasticamente a cabeça, confirmou do lado:
I complimented the preacher on the sermon; and the viscountess, enthusiastically raising her head, chimed in beside him:
-
--Admiravel!
“—Admirable!
-
admiravel!
admirable!
-
Diga-me, sr.
Tell me, Mr.
-
Alberto—she continued, tapping my knee familiarly—don't you think the abbot recited the poem with more tenderness and emotion than Emília Adelaide, in D. Maria?”
-
--Ah!--exclamei eu, espantado do confronto--sem duvida!
“—Ah!—I exclaimed, astonished by the comparison—without a doubt!”
-
The footman entered with a silver tray to receive the cups.
-
Aproximou-se da sr.^a viscondessa, e disse-lhe a meia voz:
He approached the viscountess and said to her in a low voice:
-
“—There is a poor woman downstairs, asking Your Excellency for alms.”
-
“—What insolence!—she exclaimed, knitting her brow with a look of annoyance.—Well, give her some alms then, Francisco.”
-
The abbot, who was about to take his last sip of coffee, hearing this, suspended his cup in mid-air and cut in insinuatingly:
-
--Isso!
“—That's it!
-
“Spoil them, viscountess—” he said, slowly shaking his head, “spoil them, and you'll see they will never leave your doorstep!”
