1. UN REGALO.

    A GIFT.

“In a week’s time it’s Manfredo’s name day,” Ida said to her mother.

“I really don’t know what to give him: you see, Mom, you should buy me some nice little trinket to his taste; that way I’d do myself credit and make him happy.”

“In that case, my daughter, I would be the one giving the gift, not you.”

  5. --È vero anche cotesto.

    “That’s true too.”

“But I don’t have anything he might like!”

“Let’s see: you have a lovely violet plant...”

  8. --Il violo!

    “The violet!”

  9. Ti pare?

    “Are you joking?”

“Where would I get the flowers to make you little bouquets?”

  11. Quello non lo posso dar via.

    “I can’t give that away.”

  12. --Hai il passerotto!

    “You have the little sparrow!”

  13. --Oh mamma!

    “Oh, Mom!”

  14. Il passerotto?

    “The sparrow?”

“A sparrow trained so well that it follows me everywhere!”

  16. --E le tortorine?

    “And the little turtle doves?”

“Those too, as you well know, I raised practically all on my own ever since they hatched.”

  18. Le chiamo le mie figliuole.

    “I call them my daughters.”

“So you really don’t have anything to give to poor Manfredo!”

  20. --Per quello sì!

“Oh, as for that, I do!”

  21. Ci avrei....

    “I have...”

  22. --Che cosa?

    “What?”

“Do you remember that beautiful openwork red silk purse auntie gave me last year for Christmas?”

  24. È una gran bella borsa!

    “It’s a really lovely purse!”

  25. --È vero.

    “That’s true.”

“But what do you expect your little brother to do with it?”

“He doesn’t have any money, so he wouldn’t be able to use it.”

“You too, as soon as you received it, ran straight off to toss it into the bottom of the chest of drawers.”

“Forgive me, Mom, but the purse would be a lovely little gift!”

“No, my daughter: for a gift to be truly lovely, it must be dear to us—and bring joy to the one who receives it.”

“So, according to you, I should give Manfredo all the things that are dear to me!”

  32. --Tutte, no.

    “Not all of them, no.”

  33. Una sola basterebbe!

    “Just one would be enough!”

  34. L'Ida riflettè un momento e disse:

Ida reflected for a moment and said:

“In that case, for Manfredo’s celebration, I’ll pick the loveliest little flowers from my plant, and I’ll give him the sparrow.”

  36. --Brava bambina!

    “Good girl!”

“I said to myself that my Ida has a good heart!”

“Wait: starting today, I want the sparrow to get used to flying onto Manfredo’s shoulder; that way it will grow fond of him, and when I give it to him, he’ll appreciate it even more.”

  39. --Dammi un bacio, figliuolina mia amorosa.

“Give me a kiss, my loving little daughter.”

“This thoughtful touch doubles the value of your gift.”

“You see, my dear: it is the heart that makes even the humblest gift precious.”

“I assure you that you couldn’t give a lovelier gift to Manfredo or to me.”

  43. --Anch'io sono contenta, disse la bambina.

“I’m happy too,” said the little girl.

“And you’ll be even happier on the day of the party,” Signora Maria added. “I intend to host a little afternoon treat for Manfredo and invite all his friends.”

“You, of course, will do the honors and act like the sensible, wise young lady you’ve always been.”

  46. L'hai caro?

    “Would you like that?”

Ida kissed her mother and ran to her room to give a seed to the sparrow.

  48. Curiosa!

    How curious!

  49. Non le era mai parso tanto bellino!

It had never seemed so sweet to her!
