How it happened that Master Cherry, the carpenter, found a piece of wood that cried and laughed like a child.
-
— C'era una volta....
— Once upon a time....
-
— Un re! — diranno subito i miei piccoli lettori.
— A king! — my little readers will say at once.
-
— No, ragazzi, avete sbagliato.
— No, children, you are mistaken.
-
Once upon a time there was a piece of wood.
-
It was not fine wood, but a simple log for the woodpile, the kind that in winter is put into stoves and fireplaces to light the fire and warm the rooms.
-
I do not know how it happened, but the fact is that one fine day this piece of wood ended up in the shop of an old carpenter named Master Antonio, though everyone called him Master Cherry because the tip of his nose was always shiny and red, like a ripe cherry.
-
[Illustrazione: .... sentì una vocina sottile sottile.]
[Illustration: ... he heard a very thin little voice.]
-
As soon as Master Cherry saw that piece of wood, he was delighted; and rubbing his hands together in satisfaction, he muttered half‑under his breath:
-
— This wood has arrived just in time; I want to use it to make a table leg. —
-
No sooner said than done, he immediately took up the sharpened axe to start stripping off the bark and shaping it; but when he was about to let the first blow fall, he stopped with his arm suspended in the air, because he heard a very thin little voice pleading:
-
— Non mi picchiar tanto forte! —
— Don't hit me so hard! —
-
Figuratevi come rimase quel buon vecchio di maestro Ciliegia!
Imagine how that good old Master Cherry was left!
-
He rolled his bewildered eyes around the room to see where that little voice could possibly have come from, and he saw no one!
-
He looked under the workbench, and no one; he looked inside a cupboard that was always kept closed, and no one; he looked in the basket of shavings and sawdust, and no one; he opened the shop door to glance out onto the street, and no one.
-
O dunque?...
So then?...
-
— I understand; — he said then, laughing and scratching his wig — it seems I imagined that little voice.
-

Let's get back to work. —
-
And taking the axe in hand again, he brought it down with a most solemn blow upon the piece of wood.
-
— Ohi!
— Ouch!
-
tu m'hai fatto male! — gridò rammaricandosi la solita vocina.
you hurt me! — cried the same little voice in complaint.
-
This time Master Cherry was petrified, his eyes popping out of his head with fear, his mouth wide open and his tongue hanging down to his chin like a fountain gargoyle.
-
Appena riebbe l'uso della parola, cominciò a dire tremando e balbettando dallo spavento:
As soon as he regained the use of speech, he began to say, trembling and stammering with fright:
-
— But where could that little voice that said ouch have come from?...
-
Eppure qui non c'è anima viva.
And yet there is not a living soul here.
-
Could it possibly be this piece of wood that has learned to cry and complain like a child?
-
Io non lo posso credere.
I can't believe it.
-
Here is this wood; it's a piece of firewood like all the others, and throwing it on the fire would be enough to boil a pot of beans....
-
O dunque?
Well then?
-
Che ci sia nascosto dentro qualcuno?
Could there be someone hidden inside?
-
If there's someone hidden inside, so much the worse for him.
-
Ora l'accomodo io! —
Now I'll fix it! —
-
And so saying, he grabbed that poor piece of wood with both hands and began to beat it mercilessly against the walls of the room.
-
Then he listened carefully to hear if there was any little voice complaining.
-
Aspettò due minuti, e nulla; cinque minuti, e nulla; dieci minuti, e nulla!
He waited two minutes, and nothing; five minutes, and nothing; ten minutes, and nothing!
-
— I

And because a great fear had come over him, he tried to hum a little tune to give himself some courage.
-
Meanwhile, having set the axe aside, he took the plane in his hand to plane and smooth the piece of wood; but while he was planing it back and forth, he heard the usual little voice say to him, laughing:
-
— Smetti!
— Stop!
-
tu mi fai il pizzicorino sul corpo! —
you're tickling my body! —
-
This time the poor Master Cherry fell down as if struck by lightning.
-
When he reopened his eyes, he found himself sitting on the ground.
-
His face seemed transfigured, and even the tip of his nose, which was usually purplish, had turned blue from the great fear.
