-
LA MADIA.
THE KNEADING TROUGH.
-
As soon as Luca heard the sound of the crutches, he opened his eyes wide and turned them, burning and wild, toward the door, waiting for his brother to appear on the threshold.
-
His whole face, exhausted by suffering, devoured by fever, and covered with reddish blisters, suddenly took on an expression of hardness and almost of anger.
-
He seized his mother's hands convulsively, shouting, with a hoarse and broken voice:
-
— Caccialo!
“Throw him out!”
-
Caccialo!
“Throw him out!”
-
Non lo voglio vedere.
“I don't want to see him.”
-
Capisci?
“Do you understand?”
-
Non lo voglio vedere; mai più.
“I don't want to see him; never again.”
-
Capisci?
“Do you understand?”
-
Le parole lo soffocarono.
The words choked him.
-
He squeezed his mother's hands tightly, coughing with great strain, while the shirt on his chest heaved and opened a little with every exertion.
-
His mouth was swollen; and across his chin, the dried-up blisters formed a sort of crust that cracked and bled with every exertion.
-
La madre cercava di placarlo.
His mother tried to soothe him.
-
— Sì, sì, figlio mio.
“Yes, yes, my son.”
-
Non lo vedrai più.
“You won't see him anymore.”
-
Farò come tu vuoi.
“I will do as you wish.”
-
Lo caccerò, lo caccerò.
“I will throw him out, I will throw him out.”
-
“This is your house, son, all yours.”
-
Mi senti?
“Do you hear me?”
-
Luca le tossiva sul volto.
Luca was coughing into her face.
-
“Now, now, right away,” he was saying, with fierce persistence, raising himself from the bed, pushing his mother toward the door.
-
— Sì, figlio mio.
“Yes, my son.”
-
Ora, sùbito.
“Now, right away.”
-
Ciro appeared on the threshold, supporting himself on his crutches.
-
He was frail, with a large, heavy head.
-
I capelli erano così biondi che quasi parevan bianchi.
His hair was so blond that it seemed almost white.
-
His eyes were gentle like a lamb's, blue between his long, light eyelashes.
-
Entering, he said nothing, as he was mute due to paralysis.
-
But he saw the sick man's eyes, looking at him intent and cruel; and he stopped in the middle of the room, leaning on his crutches, hesitant, not daring to step forward.
-
His right leg, twisted and shortened, had a small, visible tremor.
-
Luca disse alla madre:
Luca said to his mother:
-
— Che viene a fare, questo stroppiato?
“What is this cripple doing here?”
-
Caccialo via!
“Throw him out!”
-
Voglio che tu lo cacci via.
“I want you to throw him out.”
-
Capisci?
“Do you understand?”
-
Sùbito.
“Right now.”
-
Ciro understood, and looked at his stepmother who was already about to get up.
-
He looked at her with eyes so pleading that she didn't have the heart to force him away.
-
Then, holding a crutch under his armpit, he made a desperate gesture with his free hand.
-
And he cast a ravenous look at the kneading trough in the corner.
-
Voleva dire:
He meant to say:
-
— Ho fame.
“I'm hungry.”
-
— No, no; non gli dar niente — si mise a gridare Luca, agitandosi tutto sul letto, imponendo alla donna il suo capriccio malvagio. — Niente!
“No, no; don't give him anything!” Luca began shouting, thrashing on the bed, imposing his wicked caprice upon the woman. “Nothing!”
-
Mandalo via.
“Send him away.”
-
Ciro had bowed his large head upon his chest, trembling, with his eyes full of tears.
-
When his stepmother put a hand on his shoulder and pushed him toward the doorway, he burst into sobs; but he let himself be led.
-
Poi sentì chiuder l'uscio; e rimase sul pianerottolo, a singhiozzare.
Then he heard the door close; and he remained on the landing, sobbing.
-
Singhiozzava forte e costante.
He sobbed loudly and steadily.
-
Luca said to his mother, with an angry gesture:
-
— Lo senti?
“Do you hear him?”
-
Fa apposta, per farmi venir male.
“He's doing it on purpose, to make me feel worse.”
-
His brother's sobbing continued, interrupted at times by a strange whimpering, heartbreaking like the death rattle of a dying beast of burden.
-
— Ma lo senti?
“Don't you hear him?”
-
Va.
Go.
-
Gettalo per le scale!
“Throw him down the stairs!”
-
The woman sprang up impetuously; she rushed to the door and raised her harsh hands over the mute boy, hands accustomed to beating and inflicting cruelty.
-
Luca, sollevato in su' gomiti, ascoltava i colpi, dicendo:
Luca, propped up on his elbows, listened to the blows, saying:
-
— Ancóra!
“Again!”
-
ancóra!
“again!”
-
Sotto le percosse, Ciro tacque.
Under the blows, Ciro fell silent.
-
Trattenendo il pianto, discese nella strada.
Holding back his tears, he went down into the street.
-
He was starving; he had not eaten for nearly two days.
-
He barely had the strength to drag his crutches.
-
A pack of urchins ran past, chasing a kite that caught the wind and pitched about.
-
Taluni gli diedero un urto, gridandogli:
Some bumped into him, shouting:
-
— Ehi, lo stroppiatino!
“Hey, little cripple!”
-
Altri lo beffarono, gridandogli:
Others mocked him, shouting:
-
— Vieni, bàrbero, alla carriera!
“Come on, racehorse, hit full speed!”
-
Others, referring to his large head, asked him mockingly:
-
— Quanto la libbra il cervello, stroppiatino?
“How much a pound for your brain, little cripple?”
-
One of them, more heartless than the rest, knocked away one of his crutches and took off running.
-
The mute boy stumbled; then he gathered it up with difficulty and moved on.
-
The shouts and laughter of the urchins faded away toward the river.
-
The kite soared, like a bird from foreign lands, into a soft, rose-tinted sky.
-
Companies of soldiers sang in chorus along the Bagno prison.
-
It was the fine season, just before the Easter holiday.
-
Ciro, feeling hunger gnawing at his vitals, thought:
-
— Ora chiedo l'elemosina.
“Now I'll beg for alms.”
-
From the bakery came the fragrance of fresh bread carried on the spring breeze.
-
A man dressed in white passed by, carrying on his head a long board upon which lay neatly arranged many golden-colored loaves that were still steaming.
-
Two dogs followed him, noses in the air, wagging their tails.
-
Ciro felt almost faint with weakness.
-
Pensava: — Ora chiedo l'elemosina; se no, muoio.
He thought: “Now I'll beg for alms; otherwise, I'll die.”
-
Il giorno cadeva lentamente.
Day was slowly fading.
-
The translucent sky was scattered all over with kites drifting gently back down toward the earth.
-
The bells sent a continuous, deep reverberation through the resonant air.
-
Ciro thought: “Now I'll position myself at the church door.”
-
E si trascinò verso quel luogo.
And he dragged himself toward that spot.
-
La chiesa in fatti era aperta.
The church was indeed open.
-
At the far end, the altar could be seen lit with flickering flames, like a constellation.
-
Usciva fuori l'aroma dell'incenso e del belzuino, svanito.
Outside floated the faint, lingering aroma of incense and benzoin.
-
From time to time, the organ poured out a great burst of sound.
-
Ciro suddenly felt new tears clouding his eyes.
-
Egli pregò nel suo cuor religioso:
He prayed in his devout heart:
-
— O Signore, Dio mio, aiutami tu!
“O Lord, my God, help me!”
-
The organ let out a thunderous peel that made the pillars vibrate like instruments; then it brightened into clear notes.
-
Sorsero le voci dei cantori.
The singers' voices arose.
-
And the devout men and women entered, by twos and threes, through the single door.
-
Ciro non osava ancora tendere la mano.
Ciro did not yet dare to stretch out his hand.
-
Un mendicante, poco discosto, chiese lamentevole:
A beggar, a little distance away, pleaded mournfully:
-
— La carità, per l'amore di Dio!
“Charity, for the love of God!”
-
Allora il muto ebbe onta.
Then the mute boy felt ashamed.
-
He saw his stepmother enter the church, all wrapped up beneath her black cloak.
-
Pensò: — Se andassi a casa, mentre la matrigna è fuori?
He thought: “What if I went home while my stepmother is out?”
-
The craving for food stung him so fiercely that he hesitated no longer.
-
He flew on his crutches, chasing the hope of bread.
-
A young woman passing by shouted to him, laughing: “Are you running a race, little cripple?”
-
He reached the house in a flash, panting and with his heart pounding.
-
He went up the stairs with infinite caution, without a sound.
-
He felt around for the key in a wall niche where his stepmother usually left it when going out.
-
He found it; and before opening, he looked through the keyhole.
-
Luca, sul letto, pareva sopito.
Luca, on the bed, seemed asleep.
-
Ciro pensò: — Se potessi prendere il pane senza svegliarlo!
Ciro thought: “If only I could get the bread without waking him!”
-
And he turned the key very slowly, holding his breath, fearing he might wake his brother with the beating of his heart.
-
It felt as if those heartbeats filled the whole house with a deafening noise.
-
“And what if he wakes up?” thought Ciro with a chill in his bones when he felt that the door was open.
-
Ma la fame lo rendeva audace.
But hunger made him bold.
-
He entered, setting his crutches down delicately, never taking his eyes off his brother.
-
— E se si sveglia?
“And what if he wakes up?”
-
His brother, lying on his back, breathed heavily in that slumber.
-
From time to time, almost a faint whistle escaped his lips.
-
A single candle burned on the table, casting broad, shifting shadows onto the wall.
-
As soon as Ciro reached the kneading trough, he stopped to overcome his trembling; he looked at the sleeper; then, holding both crutches under his armpits, he set about lifting the lid.
-
La madia scricchiolava forte.
The kneading trough creaked loudly.
-
D'improvviso Luca diede un balzo, svegliandosi.
Suddenly Luca started up, waking.
-
He saw his brother in that act and began to shout at him, waving his arms like one possessed:
-
— Ah, ladro!
“Ah, thief!”
-
Ah, ladro!
“Ah, thief!”
-
Aiuto!
“Help!”
-
Ma il furore lo soffocava.
But rage choked him.
-
While his brother, blinded by hunger, leaning over the kneading trough, searched with trembling hands for a piece of bread, he threw himself out of bed and rushed at him to stop him from taking it.
-
— Ladro!
“Thief!”
-
Ladro! — gridava, fuori di sè.
“Thief!” he yelled, beside himself.
-
Beside himself, he slammed the heavy lid down onto Ciro's neck; who thrashed desperately like a victim in a snare.
-
Luca resisted those struggles, having lost all awareness of what he was doing, pressing down with all his weight, as if to decapitate his brother.
-
The lid creaked, biting into the raw flesh of the nape, crushing the pipes of his throat, pounding the veins and nerves.
-
An inert body hung limply from the kneading trough, moving no more.
-
Allora, in conspetto dello storpio trucidato, uno sbigottimento pazzo invase l'animo del fratello.
Then, in the presence of the slaughtered cripple, a wild terror seized his brother's soul.
-
Two or three times, staggering, he crossed the room which the flickers of the candle filled with terrors; he grabbed the blankets, pulled them over himself, wrapped himself up completely, covering his head too; then he crouched under the bed.
-
And in the silence his teeth chattered, like a file against iron.
