1. AGONIA.

    AGONY.

When Donna Letizia entered, holding the sick animal in her lovely, plump arms with an attitude of teardrop mercy, all her daughters rushed around her, moved, and exhaled the gentle pity of their souls in moaning laments.

The female voices echoed confusedly through the room amid the noises rising from the street traffic through the open windows; and mixed with the girls' lamentations came the interjections of a charlatan praising angelic waters and miraculous powders.

The dog, in the lady's arms, then felt a slight tremor run along its whole back to the tip of its tail; it tried to lift its eyelids, to turn toward the caresses those huge eyes filled with gratitude.

It moved its head with painful efforts, as if the tendons in its neck had stiffened; its mouth was half-open, from which the edge of its tongue, caught between two protruding teeth, stuck out like a crimson leaf streaked with purplish veins.

And a soft drool moistened its chin, that small part of the lower jaw where the sparsity of hair revealed the pink skin.

And the strain of its breathing sometimes grew harsher into a sort of wheezing hoarseness, while from hour to hour its nostrils dried out and took on the hard, rough look of a truffle.

“Oh, Sancho, poor Sancho, what have they done to you?

  10. Povero bibì, eh?

    Poor little creature, eh?

  11. Povero vecchio mio!..

    My poor old boy!..”

The sensitive girls' expressions of sympathy grew ever more tender, ending in a babyish babble of meaningless words, mournful sounds, and affectionate cooing.

They all wanted to run a hand over the animal's head, take one of its paws, touch its nostrils.

Donna Letizia supported the sweet weight maternally; and her plump, white fingers, whose joints seemed swollen almost as if by disease, gently tickled Sancho's belly, slipping into his coat.

The afternoon light and the cool sea breeze entered the room through the greenish curtains.

Eight colored prints in black frames adorned the walls, which were covered in yellow floral wallpaper.

Atop an old eighteenth-century chest of drawers with a pink marble top and brass studs sat a display of wax flowers under a glass dome, positioned between two small mirrors supported by silver stands.

Above the fireplace gleamed a pair of gilded candlesticks with unlit candles.

A papier-mâché automaton depicting a macaque in Moorish garb meditated motionless atop one of those inlaid small tables that come from Sorrento.

Many chairs with pastoral fairy-tale vignettes on their backs, an Empire-style sofa, and two modern armchairs contributed to the discord of shapes and colors.

  21. II.

    II.

When the sick animal was laid gently upon one of the armchairs, a moment of silence fell over the room.

Sancho stood up for a moment, trembling, and turned around several times in search of a less painful position; in the restlessness of his suffering, he tried to rest his head on one of the armrests, then sank onto his hind legs; at last he stayed like that with eyes half-closed, breathing heavily, as if overcome by sudden drowsiness.

On his broad chest, the loose skin formed three or four folds, almost like a small dewlap; above the nape of his neck, the folds were larger and rounder; the edges of his lips on the sides of his upper jaw hung limply; and in his illness, the poor animal now had that certain mixture of the laughable and the pitiable found in short men afflicted by obesity and asthma.

Faced with that prostration, the girls remained silent, overcome by an immense sorrow, struck by a foreboding of misfortune; for Sancho had been for many years the object of their loving care, their caresses, and their pets—the harmless outlet for the softness and tenderness of their pale adolescent hearts.

Sancho had been born and raised in the house, with the stocky, heavy frame of a mixed breed, with the roundness of an idle, greedy, neutered beast; and little by little, a look full of humanity and devotion had appeared in his round eyes.

He used to wag the stump of his tail briskly in times of joy, balancing on just three legs and curling himself all up with a singular quivering of his coat, trotting with the grace of a guinea pig through the spring grass.

These fond memories now tormented the fragile souls of the young girls.

“And when is the doctor coming?” asked Teodolinda, the youngest daughter, in an impatient voice; she had the face of a young ape, completely white with face powder, and a broad fringe of red hair across her forehead.

At times the sick animal uttered a kind of faint groan, opening his eyes and casting a pleading look around him—a slow, sweet look made more human by the nervous twitching at the corners of his eyelids and by two dark lines that running fluids had marked under his eye sockets.

And as Donna Letizia tried to make him take a spoonful of nourishing soup, he flicked his supple tongue outside his mouth in every direction with the effort of swallowing, unable to close his stiffened jaws.

Just then, Doctor Zenzuino's voice was heard in the anteroom; he had finally come upstairs.

And into the room stepped a gentleman with a fine, radiant face glowing with joviality and health.

  34. — Oh Don Giovanni, guarite Sancio!

    “Oh Don Giovanni, cure Sancho!

  35. Sta per morire — esclamò una voce flebile.

He is about to die!” exclaimed a faint voice.

The doctor looked around at that whole grieving family, which he had nourished with arsenic, iron, chalybeate oil, and Levico water for so many years in vain, and a light glint of a smile flickered across his gold-rimmed glasses.

Then, observing the patient with the curiosity of a inquiring man of science, he said very slowly:

“I believe this is a case of paralysis of the jaw and the submandibular salivary glands.

The disease, which stems from a central nervous disturbance—likely of the meninges—and which by its etiology may depend on an inherited or parasitic cause, is progressive in nature.

The process, which tends to spread, will partially and progressively deprive the body, organ by organ, of its functionality; until shortly, acting upon the center of one of the vital functions, whether of circulation or respiration, it will produce death...”

The terrible, barbarous words struck supreme anguish into their tender little souls; and Donna Letizia's florid cheeks turned pale in an instant.

“I believe that diet played a part in the development of the disease,” added Don Giovanni, without mercy.

At that implied accusation, remorse began to torment the girls, who had always been guilty of indulgent weakness toward Sancho's greed.

And Teodolinda, with a gesture of ineffable distress, asked:

  45. — Non c'è dunque rimedio?

    “Is there no remedy, then?”

  46. — Tentiamo.

    “Let us try.

I advise applying a blister plaster to the nape of the neck,” replied the doctor, finally taking his leave graciously.

  48. Sancio voleva discendere dalla poltrona.

Sancho wanted to get down from the armchair.

He hesitated on the edge, lacking the strength to make the leap, pleading for help with feeble eyes that were already clouding over like two black grape berries dusted with the silvery bloom of ripeness.

In his corpulence, pain gradually hollowed out senile shadows; the pinkish hues of his snout, where the hair was long and sparse, seemed to decay, turning almost yellowish; his cropped ears had a tiny quiver from time to time; and at the same moment, a visible shudder ran through his white fur.

Then Isabella, the most ethereal of the five girls—who by a cruelty of fate had inherited her father's pious Bourbon nose and hare-like forehead—stepped forward deeply moved, taking the sick creature into her delicate hands to place him gently on the floor.

Sancho at first stood still for a moment, unable to take a step, his back arched and his head held high, oppressed by his labored breathing; then he began to drag himself along, staggering, with the painful struggle of an animal wounded in both thighs.

Perhaps he was thirsty, for when the bowl was brought close to him, he tried to lap at the liquid with his tongue.

But as the spreading paralysis was already preventing him from doing even that, after useless, angry efforts he turned around, collapsing onto his hind legs, and with one of his front paws began to paw at his jaw, as if to finally dislodge the obstacle that was causing him so much pain.

And the attitude was so intensely human, and his pupils were so full of human supplication and despair, that Donna Letizia suddenly burst into tears:

  56. — Oh, povero bibì!

    “Oh, poor little creature!

  57. Chi te l'avesse mai detto, povero bibì mio!..

Who could have ever foreseen this for you, my poor little creature!..”

The emotion among all the girls reached its highest pitch.

Teodolinda picked up the dying animal, carried him to the sofa, and asked for the scissors.

A bit of heroism was needed; the remedy had to be tried at long last, at any cost.

  61. — Isabella, Maria, le forbici!

    “Isabella, Maria, the scissors!

  62. Venite!

    Come here!”

All anxious and pale, they bent around Sancho, who had half-closed his eyelids again and breathed his hot breath into the hands of his rescuer.

And the latter, having overcome her initial reluctance, began to trim the fur on the animal's nape, gently, stopping every now and then, softly blowing on the shaved area as she went.

A kind of irregular tonsure was widening across the fat fold of his neck; and the tonsured creature thus took on a new, piteously clownish appearance.

The balcony curtains, filled by the breeze, billowed like two sails.

The din of the street rose in a confused blur, lively and joyful; a view of humble houses could be glimpsed in the distance in the pale golden glow of sunset; and a blackbird was whistling.

Then Natalia, Donna Letizia's beautiful daughter-in-law, came down from the upper rooms carrying a baby in her arms, and entered the room.

She had an oval face, fine, pink skin mapped with delicate veins, very clear eyes, translucent nostrils—in short, all the sweetness of blood typical of a fair woman, framed by a rebellious mass of dark hair; and she had in her form, her clothes, her walk, that simple negligence, that happy, almost bovine placidity, that sort of milky freshness of young mothers who nurse their child at their own breast.

As soon as she saw the tonsured dog, such a spontaneous burst of hilarity came over her that she could not keep the laughter behind her teeth.

  71. — Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah!..

    “Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!..”

  72. Come?

    “How so?”

  73. Natalia osava ridere, mentre quel povero Sancio moriva?

Natalia dared to laugh while poor Sancho was dying? The sensitive unmarried girls cast a bitter look of indignation at their irreverent and cruel sister-in-law.

But she, with cheerful carelessness, stepped forward to hold out the baby toward the animal.

And the half-naked baby waved his restless little hands, trying to touch him, vibrating with natural joy and babbling incomprehensible sounds from a mouth still wet with mother's milk.

And the animal, long accustomed to bowing his gentle head to those reachings, still had in his sick limbs a hesitant flutter of playfulness, and in his eyes a supreme flicker of knowing kindness.

  77. — Povero Sancio Panza!

“Poor Sancho Panza!” Natalia murmured at last, pulling back her child, whose fingers were about to be covered in drool.

And, as the child puckered his lips to cry, she paced around the room two or three times, rocking and bouncing him; then, stopping in front of the automaton, she turned the key to wind the mechanism.

The macaque opened its mouth, blinked its eyelids, twirled its tail, coming alive all over inside to the tune of a well-known gavotte.

That voluptuous dance rhythm stirred the air and moved Natalia's head to the beat.

The light in the room was soft; the scent of carnations entered from the pots on the open balcony.

  82. Sancio non udiva forse più.

    Perhaps Sancho heard no longer.

At the caustic burning of the blister plaster on the nape of his neck, he twitched his back from time to time and bowed his head low with a feeble whimper.

  84. La lingua ritirata fra i denti, violacea, quasi anzi nerastra, aveva già perduta ogni facoltà di moto.

His tongue, pulled back between his teeth, purplish, almost blackish, had already lost all ability to move.

His eyes, now covered by a sort of bluish, moist membrane, retained no other expression of agony than the quick appearance of a white edge at the corners of the sockets.

The drool came forth more copiously and thickly.

  87. L'asfissia pareva imminente.

    Asphyxiation seemed imminent.

  88. — Oh Natalia, cessa!

    “Oh Natalia, stop!

Can't you see that Sancho is dying?” burst out Isabella, her voice full of bitterness and tears.

The gavotte could not be interrupted before the power imparted to the machine by the key ran down.

The notes continued, slow and soft, to drift over the dog's agony.

Meanwhile, twilight shadows began to creep inside, and the curtains fluttered in the cool air.

Then Donna Letizia, choked with tears, unable to bear the heartbreak any longer, left the room.

All her daughters followed her, one by one, weeping, their tender chests heavy with grief.

Only Natalia, out of curiosity, stepped close to the dying dog.

And while the gavotte was at its refrain, good Sancho passed away to music, like the hero of an Italian opera.
