Le redini di Brunello.
Brunello's Reins.
-
When Momolo arrived, Bortolino the blacksmith and Marco, his apprentice, were attaching the lanterns to the cart.
-
“She was expecting you,” Bortolino said to his brother-in-law; “my wife is eager to see you too.”
-
We've set out a splendid fine wine, and my celebration will be a merry one.
-
Only, I'm sorry, but I have to leave you here until very late.
-
Saverio brought me a note from my cousin early this evening, who has something important to tell me.
-
Bisogna ch'io scenda a Fiumenero.
I must go down to Fiumenero.
-
I don't know what it's about, but you'll see that I'll be back before eleven.
-
Elena appeared carrying a lamp; she greeted her brother and invited him inside.
-
Il baroccio era pronto.
The cart was ready.
-
--Io vado--gridò Bortolino; e saltò in fretta sul veicolo.
“I'm off!” shouted Bortolino; and he quickly jumped onto the vehicle.
-
Then he cracked the whip, grumbled a goodbye, and Brunello moved toward the gate.
-
Marco lo teneva per le redini.
Marco was holding him by the reins.
-
“Leave him be, I'll guide him,” his master said to him.
-
And stopping short, as if struck by a sudden thought, he turned back to Momolo again.
-
“Forgive me, you know: I didn't ask you about your wife.”
-
Perchè non è qui Petronilla?
“Why isn't Petronilla here?”
-
--Eh!
“Ah!”
-
con questo buio era impossibile.
“In this darkness it was impossible.”
-
Aveva paura.
“She was afraid.”
-
“She did the right thing,” added Elena. “But really, Bortolino, you should put off your trip until another time too!”
-
Bortolino the blacksmith, by way of answer, let go of the reins and vanished into the darkness.
-
--Bortolino!
“Bortolino!”
-
“Bortolino!” Elena cried at the top of her voice. “Be careful, for God's sake!”
-
c'è un vento d'inferno e non ci si vede a due passi.
“There's a hellish wind and you can't see two steps ahead.”
-
“Cover your throat and don't make Brunello run.”
-
Sai bene che stupido è Brunello!
“You know full well how stupid Brunello is!”
-
ti potrebbe anche precipitare nel Serio!
“He could even plunge you into the Serio!”
-
In the distance could be heard the measured trot of the colt, and gusts of wind passing over the thicket minute by minute hissed like snakes.
-
“What recklessness!” Elena burst out to her brother, pulling him into the shop.
-
And there, crouching by the stove, they began to talk about many things.
-
In a low voice, with poorly suppressed anxiety, she repeated to him that Bortolino was becoming more and more unbearable, sparing her no humiliation of any kind and seeking every way to contradict her.
-
When it came to buying Brunello, after she had remarked to him that it was not wise to get such a young and lively beast, that wicked man had immediately wanted him at a high price; already twice, along the road to Clusone, they had fallen together, one on top of the other, with the cart loaded with iron right on top of them.
-
Si erano salvàti per miracolo.
They had saved themselves by a miracle.
-
But naturally, Bortolino's affection for the colt had only grown since then.
-
Sometimes it happens like that with a person too: the more they hurt us, the more we fall in love with them.
-
Despite her husband's nastiness, did it not seem as though she herself redoubled her attentiveness toward him?—As for the shop, better not to speak of it; an indescribable mess.
-
Practically given away, one might say, the most marketable goods, and the crates filled with useless trinkets; huge sums spent on painting the shelves, and, on top of that, bringing from Passevra that sponger Marco—a lazy young lad with no desire to earn his keep, who ate at their expense and amused himself by sowing discord in the house.
-
Elena had tears in her eyes; her brother listened patiently, stooped, thoughtful, with a glass of warm wine beside him.
-
Il vento crebbe.
The wind grew stronger.
-
Although the doors were tightly closed, it managed to force its way in even through the smallest cracks and rush into the shop with rage, so that the flame flickered all over.
-
From outside there came a sinister grumbling of voices and the shuddering of dry pines, as if the crags were lamenting or three or four torrents were roaring together.
-
The mountaineers are used to it and take no notice.
-
Marco, lying across the counter, was reading a piece of an old newspaper; Momolo ended up falling asleep, and Elena seized the moment to recite the rosary.
-
Suddenly all three were startled by a thud against the front gate.
-
Marco balzò di soprassalto dal banco.
Marco leaped up with a start from the counter.
-
--Sarà il vento--disse Elena senza meravigliarsi.
“It's probably the wind,” Elena said, unaligned with surprise.
-
A second thud was heard; at the same time Brunello neighed.
-
--Pazienza!
“Be patient!”
-
“My husband is back,” she added; and she made her way toward the yard.
-
But when the gate was opened, Brunello, tired, sweaty, dusty, and smeared with foam, made his entrance alone, pulling behind him the empty cart and ruthlessly slamming it against the walls.
-
--Dov'è Bortolino?--gridò Elena atterrita.
“Where is Bortolino?” cried Elena, terrified.
-
Marco and Momolo gathered around the horse, feeling him, patting him, looking him over top to bottom, questioning him as if they could get something out of him.
-
Brunello, delighted with so much affection, kept neighing and shaking his mane as if to rid himself of the annoyance, and fixed his eyes, clouded with sleep, on the faces of the three people.
-
“Holy God, a tragedy has happened!” Elena exclaimed with a choked voice.
-
At that moment, Marco and Momolo were consulting each other.
-
The right wheel had lost a spoke, and one of the lanterns had been smashed to pieces.
-
When suddenly the apprentice, touching the animal's mouth, noticed that the bit was hanging unbuckled and that the reins were gone.
-
--Ormai è certissimo--ruggì egli pallido per l'emozione:--il principale fu attirato in un'insidia; me l'hanno sorpreso, me l'hanno derubato, me l'hanno assassinato!
“Now it is absolutely certain,” he roared, pale with emotion: “the master was lured into a trap; they caught him off guard, they robbed him, they murdered him!”
-
Elena burst into tears; Momolo, being a prudent and energetic man, immediately had a rope brought to him, fitted it to the horse's harness, climbed onto the driver's seat, and recommending calm, set off out of the yard.
-
“I'm coming too, I'm coming too,” whispered Marco, eager to ride along; but the other man wanted no hindrance, and without any fuss got rid of him with a flick of the whip.
-
Then down, down along the Serio at breakneck speed.
-
He passed through Bondione and stopped for a moment at Gervasio's to ask for news.
-
Four or five of them came out onto the road, but they couldn't tell him anything definite.
-
They had heard the cart rumbling past a couple of times; but since they were playing animatedly, they hadn't noticed which way it came from or where it was heading.
-
Altro non si poteva aggiungere.
Nothing more could be added.
-
Momolo gave no explanations whatsoever and continued on.
-
He was strong and brave, but finding himself in the middle of that deep darkness, entirely alone and unarmed, as soon as the first rush of emotion cooled down, he regretted not having asked Gervasio for a rifle, a knife, any defense at all.
-
It wasn't worth turning back; he got down from the cart, pulled up a large stake from a vineyard, and, armed with it, continued with greater confidence.
-
The Serio roared, crashing against its banks; clouds of dust flew through the air, and the colt's hooves struck the ground like hammer blows.
-
Momolo passò davanti alla propria casa.
Momolo passed in front of his own home.
-
--Guarda--pensò.--E se domandassi qualcosa a Petronilla?
“Look,” he thought. “What if I asked Petronilla something?”
-
He stopped the animal once more, leaped down from the cart, went around the garden, approached the back window on the ground floor, and, pushing his right hand past the iron grate, tapped lightly on the glass.
-
--Petronilla!--gridò.
“Petronilla!” he shouted.
-
Nessuno rispose.
No one answered.
-
--Petronilla!--replicò più forte.
“Petronilla!” he repeated louder.
-
But the wind carried his voice far away.
-
Allora si decise ad entrare.
Then he decided to go inside.
-
Moving toward the boundary wall and the entrance door, he tripped on something movable and dangling; it felt like a rod, or a rope, or a strap.
-
He bent down, picked it up, and following its length with his palm, ended up touching the iron grate itself.
-
He detached it, returned to the cart, held up that found object right under the rays of the lantern, and could not suppress an exclamation of wonder.
-
Erano le redini di Brunello!
They were Brunello's reins!
-
Non molte cose dunque si potevano sospettare.
So there were not many possibilities to suspect.
-
In all probability, after attacking Bortolino, the thieves had tied his horse in that spot and quickly fled.
-
This for two reasons: either because they were in such circumstances that they could not take the wagon and horse with them without danger of compromising and exposing themselves; or because they intended to cover their tracks this way.
-
However it was, Bortolino was either already finished or in grave danger; and as for Brunello, tired of standing in the wind and cold, having broken with an extreme effort the reins—perhaps already damaged in the attack—he had returned home like an intelligent animal.
-
Nessun dubbio in proposito: Momolo ebbe un capogiro.
No doubt about it: Momolo felt his head swim.
-
Immediately, mechanically, resolutely, with a firm step he entered the garden with the reins folded in his hand.
-
The outer door was wide open; a sliver of light showed through the crack of the inner door; Petronilla had not yet left the kitchen.
-
Egli ne provò stupore.
He felt astonishment at this.
-
His wife, when saying goodbye to him two hours earlier, had promised him she would go to bed shortly.
-
Come spiegare questo cambiamento?
How to explain this change?
-
Momolo headed to the end of the hallway, looked for the latch, pressed it, and went into the kitchen.
-
Egli rimase pietrificato.
He stood petrified.
-
His wife and Bortolino were sitting by the hearth, holding hands and chatting freely in tender intimacy.
-
Fu un lampo.
It was like a flash.
-
A gust of wind blew out the light; and Momolo, in the uncertain glow of the hearth fire, threw himself upon Bortolino while his wife fell to her knees on the floor, screaming:
-
--Santa Vergine!
“Holy Virgin!”
-
santa Vergine!
“Holy Virgin!”
-
aiuto!
“Help!”
-
But Bortolino had no time to seek safety behind the table, in the other room, or anywhere else; he didn't even try to fight back: an iron hand gripped him by the throat, and he felt five fingers choking him.
-
At the same time, Momolo, using the thick reins like a whip, struck him five or six times across the face with all his strength, ruthlessly, fiercely, amid the dark curses.
-
--Pensa!
“Think!”
-
“Think!” groaned the wretch, turning pale with agony.
-
And Momolo stopped dead in his tracks, tossing the reins into Petronilla's lap.
-
Then he took his brother-in-law by the arms, made him cross the threshold, locked the door, and got back into the cart with him.
-
“Thank Christ I forgot my stick on the cart!” he grumbled, throwing the colt into a gallop.
-
And he added nothing else for the rest of the journey, but began to cry silently.
-
When Elena heard Brunello's hoofbeats approaching in a fury, she trembled with anguish and joined her hands in supreme prayer.
-
For some time Marco had been running around Bondione telling what had happened and commenting on it in a thousand ways.
-
By his stature, his profile, his overall appearance, she guessed that the man who had arrived with her brother was Bortolino.
-
Joy made her frantic; she threw herself into his arms, kissed his face and shoulders, and pulled him into the house, sighing, without speaking.
-
But by the light of the oil lamp she noticed that Bortolino was drenched in blood; two deep gashes slashed his cheeks, and his clothes bore large reddish stains.
-
--Tu sei ferito!
“You are wounded!”
-
tu sei ferito!
“You are wounded!”
-
oh!
“Oh!”
-
per amor di Dio!
“For God's sake!”
-
quale disgrazia!--susurrò affannosamente.
“What a misfortune!” she whispered breathlessly.
-
Momolo guardava smorto come un cadavere.
Momolo looked on, pale as a corpse.
-
“It's nothing!” said Bortolino. “Brunello tipped me over onto a pile of stones.”
-
Elena proruppe in acerbi rimproveri.
Elena burst into bitter reproaches.
-
--Bortolino: vedi adesso?
“Bortolino: do you see now?”
-
non te l'aveva detto io?
“Didn't I tell you?”
-
oh!
“Oh!”
-
se tu mi avessi obbedito, Bortolino!
“If only you had listened to me, Bortolino!”
-
“If you're ruined now, it's your own fault, your own fault; and I'm sorry, but it serves you right.”
-
Bortolino the blacksmith went to bed to spare himself the nagging.
-
Elena, having bid her brother farewell, brought him warm wine, recommended that he sweat it out, watched over him like a child, and prepared bandages to wrap his cheeks.
-
In quella giunse Marco.
Just then Marco arrived.
-
--Lena!--gridò stando abbasso.--Dove siete?
“Lena!” he shouted from downstairs. “Where are you?”
-
oh!
“Oh!”
-
se sapeste!
“If you only knew!”
-
il principale è annegato.
“The master has drowned.”
-
“I saw his shoes on the bank.”
-
Vado a Gromo per i carabinieri.
“I'm going to Gromo for the carabinieri.”
-
Elena, chiamandolo imbecille, gli ordinò di salire.
Elena, calling him an imbecile, ordered him to come upstairs.
-
Visto Bortolino sotto le coltri egli stralunò tanto d'occhi.
Seeing Bortolino under the covers, he rolled his eyes wide with amazement.
-
--Oh!
“Oh!
-
“That beast of a colt!” the poor woman kept repeating. “It hurled him into a stream bed and the stones tore up his face.”
-
So saying, she lifted the covers and bandage a little to show Marco her husband's wounds.
-
“Stones?... stones?...” Marco whispered incredulously. “And you think that stones....”
-
Bortolino, annoyed, pointed to the door with an eloquent gesture.
-
A few days later, Brunello was sold to an itinerant merchant, and Marco returned to Passevra, evicted for good.
-
Elena fu contentissima.
Elena was overjoyed.
