The following lines were recently read in the newspapers:

Boulogne-sur-Mer, 22 janvier.--On nous écrit:
Boulogne-sur-Mer, January 22.--We are written:
-
"A terrible misfortune has just brought dismay to our seafaring population, already so sorely tried for two years. The fishing boat commanded by Captain Javel, entering the harbor, was thrown to the West and came to shatter upon the rocks of the jetty's breakwater. "Despite the efforts of the lifeboat and lines sent by means of the line-throwing gun, four men and the cabin boy perished. "The bad weather continues. Further disasters are feared."
-
Who is this Captain Javel? Is he the one-armed man's brother? If the poor man rolled by the wave, and dead perhaps under the debris of his boat blown to pieces, is the one I am thinking of, he had witnessed, eighteen years ago now, another drama, terrible and simple as these formidable dramas of the waves always are. Javel senior was then captain of a trawler. The trawler is the ultimate fishing boat. Sturdy enough to fear no weather, round-bellied, endlessly tossed by the waves like a cork, always out at sea, always whipped by the harsh, salty winds of the Channel, it works the sea, untiring, its sail billowed,
-
dragging along its side a large net that scrapes the ocean floor, detaching and picking up all the creatures sleeping among the rocks, the flatfish stuck to the sand, the heavy crabs with hooked legs, the lobsters with pointy feelers.
-
When the breeze is brisk and the chop short, the boat begins to fish.
-
Its net is attached all along a large wooden beam trimmed with iron, which is lowered by means of two cables sliding on two rollers at both ends of the craft.
-
And the boat, drifting downwind and with the current, pulls along this apparatus that ravages and devastates the seabed.
-
Javel had on board his younger brother, four men, and a cabin boy.
-
He had put out from Boulogne in fine, clear weather to cast the trawl.
-
Now, soon the wind rose, and a sudden gale forced the trawler to run before the storm.
-
It reached the coast of England; but the raging sea battered the cliffs, rushed against the land, and made harbor entry impossible.
-
The little boat put back out to sea and returned toward the coast of France.
-
The storm continued to make the piers impassable, shrouding all approaches to shelter in foam, noise, and danger.
-
The trawler set off again, riding the crests of the waves, tossed, shaken, dripping, buffeted by crashing seas, but sturdy nonetheless, accustomed to these rough seas that sometimes kept it wandering for five or six days between the two neighboring countries without being able to land at either.
-
Then at last the hurricane calmed down while it was out in the open sea, and although the waves were still heavy, the captain ordered the trawl to be cast.
-
So the great fishing gear was passed overboard,
-
and two men forward, two men aft, began paying out over the rollers the ropes that held it.
-
Suddenly it hit bottom, but as a high wave listed the boat, Javel junior, who was forward directing the lowering of the net, stumbled, and his arm was caught between the rope—slackened for an instant by the jolt—and the wood over which it slipped.
-
He made a desperate effort, trying with his other hand to lift the rope, but the trawl was already dragging and the taut cable did not give at all.
-
L'homme crispé par la douleur appela.
The man, contorted with pain, called out.
-
Tous accoururent.
Everyone ran to help.
-
Son frère quitta la barre.
His brother left the helm.
-
They threw themselves onto the rope, striving to free the limb it was crushing.
-
Ce fut en vain.
It was in vain.
-
"We must cut it," said a sailor, pulling from his pocket a large knife that could, with two slashes, save Javel junior's arm.
-
But cutting meant losing the trawl, and that trawl was worth money, a lot of money, fifteen hundred francs; and it belonged to Javel senior, who held fast to his property.
-
Il cria, le coeur torturé:
He shouted, his heart tormented:
-
«Non, coupe pas, attends, je vas lofer.»
"No, don't cut, wait, I'm going to luff."
-
And he ran to the helm, putting the tiller hard over.
-
The boat barely obeyed, paralyzed by the net that checked its headway, and dragged along besides by the force of the drift and the wind.
-
Javel junior had dropped to his knees, his teeth clenched, his eyes wild.
-
Il ne disait rien.
He said nothing.
-
His brother returned, still fearing a sailor's knife:
-
«Attends, attends, coupe pas, faut mouiller l'ancre.»
"Wait, wait, don't cut, we must drop anchor."
-
The anchor was dropped, the entire chain paid out, and then they began hauling at the capstan to slacken the trawl ropes.
-
They finally went slack, and the inert arm was freed from beneath the blood-stained woolen sleeve.
-
Javel cadet semblait idiot.
Javel junior seemed dazed.
-
They removed his smock and saw a ghastly thing, a pulp of flesh from which blood spurted in streams as if driven by a pump.
-
Then the man looked at his arm and murmured:
-
«Foutu.»
"Done for."
-
Then, as the bleeding formed a pool on the boat's deck, one of the sailors cried out:
-
"He's going to bleed to death, we must tie off the vein."
-
So they took a string, a thick, brown, tarred string, and wrapping it around the limb above the wound, they tightened it with all their strength.
-
The spurts of blood gradually slowed, and finally stopped altogether.
-
Javel junior stood up, his arm hanging at his side.
-
He took it with his other hand, lifted it, turned it, shook it.
-
Everything was shattered, the bones broken; muscle alone held this piece of his body to him.
-
He looked at it with a mournful eye, thinking it over..
-
Then he sat down on a folded sail, and his shipmates advised him to continuously wet the wound to prevent gangrene.
-
They put a bucket beside him, and minute by minute, he scooped from it with a glass, bathing the hideous wound by letting a small stream of clear water trickling over it.
-
"You'd be better off below," his brother told him.
-
He went below, but after an hour he came back up, not feeling well all by himself.
-
Et puis, il préférait le grand air.
And besides, he preferred the open air.
-
He sat back down on his sail and began bathing his arm once more.
-
La pêche était bonne.
The fishing was good.
-
Large white-bellied fish lay beside him, wracked with death throes; he watched them while relentlessly pouring water over his crushed flesh.
-
Just as they were about to head back to Boulogne, another gale broke loose; and the little boat resumed its
-
wild run, leaping and tumbling, jostling the wretched injured man.
-
La nuit vint.
Night fell.
-
Le temps fut gros jusqu'à l'aurore.
The weather remained rough until dawn.
-
At sunrise England was visible once more, but as the sea was less violent, they set off again for France, tacking into the wind.
-
Toward evening, Javel junior called his shipmates over and showed them black marks, a foul appearance of decay on the part of the limb that was barely attached to him.
-
Les matelots regardaient, disant leur avis.
The sailors looked on, offering their opinions.
-
"That could very well be the gangrene," thought one.
-
"Needs salt water on it," declared another.
-
So they brought salt water and poured it over the injury.
-
The injured man turned deathly pale, gnashed his teeth, and writhed a little; but he did not cry out.
-
Puis, quand la brûlure se fut calmée:
Then, when the burning had subsided:
-
«Donne-moi ton couteau», dit-il à son frère.
"Give me your knife," he said to his brother.
-
Le frère tendit son couteau.
The brother handed him his knife.
-
--
-
"Hold my arm up for me, straight up, pull on it."
-
On fit ce qu'il demandait.
They did as he asked.
-
Alors il se mit à couper lui-même.
Then he began to cut it himself.
-
He cut slowly, deliberately, severing the last tendons with that sharp blade, keen as a razor's edge; and soon he had nothing left but a stump.
-
Il poussa un profond soupir et déclara:
He let out a deep sigh and declared:
-
«Fallait ça. J'étais foutu.»
"Had to be done. I was done for."
-
Il semblait soulagé et respirait avec force.
He seemed relieved and breathed deeply.
-
He began pouring water over the remnant of the limb he had left once again.
-
The night was bad again, and they could not make land.
-
When day broke, Javel junior took his severed arm and examined it at length.
-
La putréfaction se déclarait.
Decay was setting in.
-
His shipmates came to examine it too, and they
-
passed it from hand to hand, feeling it, turning it over, sniffing it.
-
Son frère dit:
His brother said:
-
«Faut jeter ça à la mer à c't'-heure.»
"Must throw that into the sea now."
-
Mais Javel cadet se fâcha:
But Javel junior grew angry:
-
«Ah! mais non, ah! mais non. J'veux point.
"Ah! no way, ah! no way. I won't have it. It's mine, ain't it, since it's my arm."
-
He took it back and placed it between his legs.
-
"It's going to rot all the same," said the elder brother.
-
Alors une idée vint au blessé.
Then an idea came to the injured man.
-
To preserve fish when staying long at sea, they packed it in barrels of salt.
-
He asked: "Couldn't we put it in the brine?"
-
--Ça, c'est vrai, déclarèrent les autres.
"That's true enough," the others declared.
-
So they emptied one of the barrels, already full of the past days' catch; and right at the bottom, they placed the arm.
-
They poured salt over it, then replaced the fish, one by one.
-
Un des matelots fit cette plaisanterie:
One of the sailors cracked this joke:
-
"Just so we don't sell it at auction."
-
And everyone laughed, except the two Javels.
-
Le vent soufflait toujours.
The wind kept blowing.
-
They continued tacking within sight of Boulogne until ten o'clock the next morning.
-
The injured man continuously kept pouring water on his wound.
-
From time to time he got up and walked from one end of the boat to the other.
-
His brother, who held the helm, watched him closely while shaking his head.
-
On finit par rentrer au port.
They finally made it back to port.
-
The doctor examined the wound and declared it was healing well.
-
He applied a full dressing and prescribed rest.
-
But Javel did not want to go to bed without getting his arm back, and he returned quickly to the port to find the barrel he had marked with a cross.
-
They emptied it in front of him and he reclaimed his limb, well preserved in the brine, shriveled and cooled.
-
He wrapped it in a towel brought for that purpose and went home.
-
His wife and children closely examined this piece of their father, feeling the fingers, removing the bits of salt left under the nails; then they sent for the carpenter to make a small coffin.
-
The next day, the trawler's entire crew followed the funeral of the severed arm.
-
The two brothers, side by side, led the mourners.
-
The parish parish clerk carried the corpse under his armpit.
-
Javel cadet cessa de naviguer.
Javel junior gave up going to sea.
-
He obtained a modest job in the port, and when he later spoke of his accident, he would confide softly to his listener:
-
"If my brother had been willing to cut the trawl, I'd still have my arm, for sure. But he was stingy with his property."
