Ketun ja jäniksen kiista juoksusta eli jäniksen ajo.
The Fox and the Hare's Dispute Over Running, or the Hare's Chase.
-
Once, a fox and a hare happened to meet, and an argument arose between them about which of them was the better runner.
-
The hare insisted adamantly that he was better, but the fox claimed otherwise.
-
-- Lyödään vetoa, ehdotti jänis.
“Let’s make a bet,” suggested the hare.
-
-- No lyödään!
“Alright, let’s bet!”
-
Veto lyötiin ja lähdettiin kilpapaikalle.
The wager was made, and they set off for the racetrack.
-
Mutta juuri juoksuun ryhdyttäessä sanookin kettu:
But just as they were about to start running, the fox said:
-
-- En minä viitsikään, sillä minä tiedän erään eläimen, joka on meitä kumpaakin vikkelämpi.
“I don’t bother after all, for I know an animal that is faster than both of us.”
-
Mitäpä silloin tämä toimi hyödyttää?
“What good would this be then?”
-
-- No minkälainenhan tuo eläin on, ja missä se on?
“Well, what kind of animal is that, and where is it?”
-
kysyy jänis ylenkatseellisesti.
asked the hare contemptuously.
-
-- Täällä se on, täällä aholla, sanoo kettu.
“It’s here, here in the clearing,” said the fox.
-
“But I tell you, a fellow like me certainly can’t keep up with that animal, and neither can many others!”
-
-- No annahan olla, kunhan nähdään.
“Well, we’ll see about that.”
-
“Just you wait and see, surely one can keep up with it after all!”
-
-- Ei.
“No.”
-
So they came to the clearing, and the fox pointed to a horse, a young, beautiful horse that was lying in the clearing.
-
-- Tuoko se on, tuoko?
“Is that it, that one?”
-
räjähti jänis pilkallisesti nauramaan.
burst the hare into mocking laughter.
-
-- Se.
“That one.”
-
-- Mutta jopa sinä toit laitoksen luo.
“Well, you certainly brought me to quite a contraption.”
-
Tuon kanssa nyt kilpailee kuka tahansa.
“Anyone could compete with that one.”
-
Sano minulle, tokko se pääsee edes nousemaan jaloilleen.
“Tell me, can it even manage to get to its feet?”
-
-- No -- voisithan koettaa.
“Well—you could try.”
-
Hyppää sen selkään!
“Jump on its back!”
-
Jänis teki niin.
The hare did so.
-
He jumped onto the lying horse's back and also bit it on the haunches.
-
But then the young horse suddenly bolted up and broke into a wild gallop.
-
It took off so wildly and so quickly that the hare didn't have time to get off its haunches, but remained stuck on its back.
-
As he hung there terrified, he asked the fox where on earth this horse might be going, but the fox merely replied that it was surely going somewhere, and laughed so hard he was about to burst.
