1. Karhun kalanpyyntö.

    The Bear's Fishing.

A bear happened to stumble upon the fox's fish meal and wondered where his friend had gotten so many fish.

At first, the fox paid no mind, just ate with a secretive smile, but then wiped his whiskers and remarked:

  4. -- Mistäkö?

    -- Where from?

  5. Järvestä, niinkuin aina!

    From the lake, as always!

I went over to that ice hole, put my tail in the water, and when I had kept it there for a little while, it became full of fish.

  7. Vedin ylös, ja tässä ovat kalat.

I pulled it up, and here are the fish.

  8. Niin sitä kaloja saadaan!

    That's how you catch fish!

-- But do teach me that trick too, dear fellow, said the bear with a smile.

  10. Minä tahtoisin myöskin kaloja.

I would like some fish too.

  11. -- Mitäs neuvomista siinä tarvitaan, tee vain niinkuin minäkin tein, siinä kaikki.

-- What advice is needed for that? Just do as I did, that's all.

Stick your tail in the ice hole, leave it there until it starts to squeeze, and then pull.

But go at night, and on a very cold night at that; then you'll have better luck!

  14. Karhu kiitti neuvosta ja lähti eräänä pakkasyönä järven jäälle ja pisti häntänsä avantoon.

The bear thanked him for the advice and went out onto the lake ice one frosty night and stuck his tail into the ice hole.

He left it there until it started to squeeze, and then he pulled.

  16. Mutta mitä, eihän se tullutkaan sieltä.

But lo and behold, it wouldn't come out.

  17. Mikä sille tuli, ihmetteli karhu ja tempasi rajummin.

What happened to it, the bear wondered, and tugged harder.

Then it came, but broken off, for it was frozen so hard into the ice hole. -- Ever since then, the bear has had a stubby tail.

  19. Kettu karhun selässä.

The Fox on the Bear's Back.

After that, the fox had drunk milk from a farm's storehouse and met the bear with his snout and ears covered in buttermilk.

The bear held a deep grudge against the fox because of the previous trick and initially intended to give the fox a sound beating, but seeing him in this state, he forgot his intention and asked in wonder:

  22. -- Mikäs sinulle on tullut?

-- What on earth happened to you?

  23. Kettu heittäytyi varsin surkuteltavan näköiseksi ja lausui, pää painuksissa:

The fox put on a most pitiful look and said, with his head hanging low:

-- Oh, my friend, things went so terribly wrong for me: when I went into the entryway of a farm house, just to take a look, an old woman came out of the room and beat me badly with her carrying pole.

  25. Niinkuin näet: pään mäsälle.

As you can see: smashed my head to pieces.

  26. Karhu unohti silloin kaiken kaunansa kettua kohtaan ja sanoi säälitellen:

The bear then forgot all his grudge against the fox and said with pity:

  27. -- Voi sinua ukkoparkaa, kylläpä sinulle on todella huonosti käynyt.

-- Oh, you poor fellow, things really have gone badly for you.

  28. Nousehan, veikkoseni, tuonne hartioilleni, niin kannan sinua, kovaosaista, kotvasen.

Climb up onto my shoulders, my friend, and I'll carry you, poor soul, for a little while.

  29. No mitäs: kettu nousi karhun selkään ja antoi tämän kantaa itseään.

Well then: the fox climbed onto the bear's back and let him carry him.

But when he had been up there for a little while, he felt like mocking the bear, that simpleton.

  31. Hän alkoi hyräillä pilkallisesti:

    He began to hum mockingly:

-- Oh dear, the way of this world, when everything here is upside down.

  33. Tässäkin: sairas tervettä kantaa, vähämieli veitikkata!

Even here: the sick carries the healthy, the simpleton carries the rogue!

At first the bear paid no attention to this, but then raised his head and asked:

  35. -- Mitä sinä oikein laulat?

-- What are you singing, anyway?

-- N-nothing, said the fox, -- just that it's quite right that the healthy carries the sick, the unbeaten carries the beaten.

  37. -- Et sinä niin laula, toisin laulat.

-- That's not what you're singing, you're singing something else.

But I'll tell you this: if you don't keep quiet, I'll teach you a lesson about singing.

  39. -- En minä enää mitään laula, kuomaseni.

-- I won't sing anything anymore, my dear friend.

But how could the fox have kept his word? He started singing again:

-- Oh dear, the way of this world, when everything here is upside down.

  42. Tässäkin: sairas tervettä -- -- --

Even here: the sick carries the healthy -- -- --

But he got no further in his song, for the bear suddenly turned his head and grabbed his leg with his teeth.

  44. Ja täytyi ketun panna esille kaikki keinonsa ennenkuin pääsi pälkähästä.

And the fox had to use all his tricks before he got out of trouble.

  45. Mistä päin nyt tuulee?

Which Way Is the Wind Blowing Now?

  46. Sattuipa sitten karhu saamaan elävän teeren hampaisiinsa.

Then it happened that the bear caught a live black grouse in his teeth.

  47. Kettu tuli vastaan ja tahtoi kaikin mokomin saada häneltä tuon makupalan.

The fox came along and wanted that tasty morsel from him by all means.

  48. Hän mietti keinoa hetken, ja sanoi:

He thought of a trick for a moment, and said:

  49. -- Kuomaseni, mistä päin nyt tuuleekaan?

-- My dear friend, which way is the wind blowing now?

  50. Karhu muisti hyvin ketun entiset kolttoset häntä kohtaan, eikä halunnut tällä kertaa joutua nenästävedetyksi, ja sentähden hän ei virkkanut ketun kysymykseen mitään, töllisti voin taivaalle ja pudisti päätänsä.

The bear remembered the fox's previous tricks against him well, and didn't want to be fooled this time, so he said nothing to the fox's question, just stared up at the sky and shook his head.

But the fox did not want to leave the black grouse in the bear's mouth at any cost, and so he came up with a trickier scheme and asked:

  52. -- Kuomaseni, mistä päin silloin tuulee, kun puolenpäivän aikaan päivä silmiin paistaa, mutta tuuli sattuu selkään?

-- My dear friend, which way is the wind blowing when, at midday, the sun shines into your eyes but the wind hits your back?

  53. Karhu mietti hetken asiaa ja vastasi:

The bear pondered the matter for a moment and answered:

  54. -- Ka, pohjoisesta!

    -- Why, from the north!

At that moment his large mouth opened, and the black grouse dropped to the ground and was soon in the teeth of the fox, who, having caught it, darted swiftly into the forest.
