-
Ketun kalansaalis.
The Fox's Fish Catch.
-
Näkipä kerran kettu kierrellessään Metsolan takamaita miehen ajavan maantietä, suuri kalareki kuormanaan.
Once, as the fox was roaming the backwoods of Metsola, he saw a man driving along the highway with a large sleigh loaded with fish.
-
He was very hungry, and so he wondered how he might get a share of the old man's load of fish for himself.
-
Yht'äkkiä hän keksikin keinon: heittäytyi kuolleen tavoin tiepuoleen loikomaan.
Suddenly he came up with a trick: he threw himself by the side of the road, lying as if he were dead.
-
The old man was in an exceptionally good mood, humming along and swinging his legs to the rhythm of the song on the side of the sleigh, noticing nothing around him; but he did notice the dead-looking fox lying by the roadside.
-
He saw it, and thinking that splendid luck was certainly favoring him today, he went and lifted the fox onto the back of his sleigh.
-
Sitten lähti hän rallatellen edelleen ajamaan.
Then he drove off, continuing to hum his tune.
-
But once the fox was on top of the load, he remained dead-looking for only a moment; noticing that the old man was absorbed in his humming, he slowly raised himself from his lying position and quietly began throwing fish from the old man's load onto the highway.
-
Saatuaan niitä viskellyksi tarpeellisen määrän hyppäsi hän itsekin pois reestä ja koottuaan kalat tiepuoleen rupesi niitä siellä tyytyväisin mielin syömään.
Having thrown out a sufficient number of them, he jumped off the sleigh himself, and after gathering the fish by the roadside, he began to eat them there with a contented heart.
-
When the old man arrived home, he called out to his wife from far away, "Come now, old woman, and see what I got today!"
-
Reen täyden kaloja ja lisäksi komean ketun kuorman perälle.
"A sleigh full of fish, and on top of that, a handsome fox on the back of the load!"
-
Eukko tuli, mutta ei huomannut mitään kettua.
The old woman came, but she did not see any fox.
-
-- Missä se on, en minä näe, sanoi.
"Where is it? I don't see it," she said.
-
-- Siellä, siellä, korin vieressä, virkkoi ukko hoputellen hevostaan liiteriin ja katsahtamatta taakseen.
"There, there, next to the basket," said the old man, hurrying his horse into the shed without looking back.
-
-- Missä korin vieressä, en minä sitä näe, intti akka.
"Where next to the basket? I don't see it," insisted the old woman.
-
-- No sepä kummaa; kyllä se siellä on, väitti ukko ja kääntyi katsomaan.
"Well, that's strange; it certainly is there," argued the old man and turned to look.
-
Mutta eihän sitä hänkään huomannut.
But he didn't see it either.
-
Tyhjän paikan vain ja vielä loven kuormassa.
Only an empty space, and even a gap in the load.
-
Then he scratched behind his ear, and turning back to his horse, mused to himself:
-
-- No jopa se kettu-pakana teki aika kepposen.
"Well, that rascal of a fox sure played a grand trick on me."
-
Eikä hän senjälkeen puhunut mitään mainiosta kalamatkastaan.
And after that, he didn't say a word about his splendid fishing trip.
