SUSTO
THE FRIGHT
-
Era la comida de los niños.
It was the children's supper.
-
The lamp was dreaming its warm, rosy light over the snow-white tablecloth, and the red geraniums and painted apples colored that simple idyll of innocent faces with a sharp joy.
-
The little girls ate like women; the little boys argued like some men.
-
In the background, nursing a tiny baby, the mother—young, blonde, and beautiful—looked at them with a smile.
-
Through the garden window, the clear, starlit night trembled, harsh and cold.
-
Suddenly, Blanca fled, like a faint beam of light, into her mother's arms.
-
There was a sudden silence, and then, in a clatter of overturned chairs, they all rushed after her in a swift commotion, looking, terrified, at the window.
-
¡El tonto de Platero!
Silly Platero!
-
With his big white head pressed against the pane, made huge by the darkness, the glass, and their fear, he was contemplating, still and sad, the sweet, brightly lit dining room.
