EL CANARIO VUELA
THE CANARY FLIES
-
Un día, el canario verde, no sé cómo ni por qué, voló de su jaula.
One day, the green canary, I don't know how or why, flew out of its cage.
-
Era un canario viejo, recuerdo triste de una muerta, al que yo no había dado libertad por miedo de que se muriera de hambre ó de frío, ó de que se lo comieran los gatos.
It was an old canary, a sad memory of a dead woman, which I had not set free for fear that it would die of hunger or cold, or that the cats would eat it.

Suddenly, and without anyone knowing how or why, it appeared back in its cage, happy once again.
-
¡Qué alborozo en el jardín!
What joy in the garden!

The children skipped, clapping their hands, flushed and laughing like dawn; Diana, crazed, followed them, barking at her own tinkling bell; Platero, caught up in the mood, in a ripple of silver flesh, just like a little goat, pranced, spun on his hooves in a clumsy waltz, and, rearing up on his front legs, kicked his hind hooves into the clear, warm air...
