Jingzong said, "The parrot descending from the sky, the sun and moon shining together, and the stripping of the plum tree's branches—the one who will bring chaos to the Tang Empire in the future must be Princess Wuzhao, Mulan. Li Chunfeng stated that this woman resides in the palace, subtly indicating that Mulan is someone Your Majesty favors; the designs of Heaven must not be disclosed. Furthermore, the hexagram states: 'The one-eyed can see, the lame can walk, treading on the tiger's tail.' To be called 'one-eyed' or 'lame' implies an incomplete physical form, yet being able to see and walk makes her incomparable to the truly blind or lame. If she treads on the tiger's tail without fear, there will surely be the disaster of being bitten; she will bring calamity to your descendants in the future and usurp the throne, for a 'Wu' person shall become the sovereign. Mulan disguised herself as a man, served in the army for twelve years, and earned twelve great merits—who is this 'Wu' person if not her? Do you not know that 'lack of forbearance in small matters ruins great plans'? Why does Your Majesty adopt the 'mercy of a woman' instead of investigating the impending disaster? Now that the founding ministers are all elderly and the rising scholars are of clear mind and spirit, is there anyone among those who command the people's hearts like Mulan?"

Moreover, the Buddhists say: "External thoughts do not enter, internal thoughts do not emerge." Is this not the crucial essence of the human heart and the Tao-heart? The substance of the heart is originally one, but its applications are two. Focus on the one within and do not diverge to the external, and the Tao-heart is attained. Diverge to the external and forget the internal, and the human heart arises. This is why when the Sages drew the hexagrams—Li in the South, Kan in the North, Zhen in the East, and Dui in the West—they did not place a single stroke within the eight trigrams. For the Tao-heart shares the same substance as the Great Void, leaving no place for a stroke to be made. Thus it is said: "The Yi existed before the lines were drawn"; one must realize that the Formless is the Primal—is this not profound? Zhuangzi likened the Tao-heart to the "Land of Nowhere," saying: "He whose desires are deep has a shallow heavenly mechanism; let your mind wander in simplicity, blend your spirit with the vastness, follow the nature of things, and allow no room for selfishness." Zhuangzi can be said to have understood the application of the Tao. It is a pity he regarded pure void as the source of the Tao and benevolence and righteousness as mere appendages, not knowing that benevolence is the substance of the Tao-heart, while the void is its application. There has never been one who is benevolent whose heart is not empty, nor has there been one whose heart is empty but is not benevolent. It is a pity that Zhuangzi possessed the wisdom of a Sage but lacked the talent of a Sage.

Yu Fei said: "Sit quietly and contemplate it. You will perceive a stream of delusive thoughts, a thousand tangled threads, constantly rolling across the surface of your mind; this is called the Realm of Desire. At this time, let them be chaotic as they will, but focus your mind on guarding the 'Master.' Over time, you will feel the delusive thoughts vanish, and your inner heart will be as it is—stable and present. You will then feel that this heart is not the ordinary heart, but rather a realm of brightness. Within this bright realm, you will sense a sovereign power, unmoving and unshakable. The ancients said: 'Externally without selfish desires, internally aligned with Heavenly Principle, and sincerely holding fast to the Mean'—this is it. They also said: 'Indistinct and shadowy, yet within it is an image; shadowy and indistinct, yet within it is a substance.' This also refers to this state. However, though you may say you have seen the Tao-mind, you must never claim to have 'attained' anything or allow the slightest trace of intention to remain within. If you cling to an intention, you are clinging to 'form.' The ancients said: 'Cling to form externally, and the inner mind becomes chaotic; cling to form internally, and the true nature is not empty.' If it is not empty, the true nature lacks spiritual clarity. These are truly sincere words."
