When the soldiers heard how powerful the poison arrows were, they could hardly wait for the Tang troops to attack so they could test their effectiveness. The next day, sure enough, the Tang troops came to attack the city again. The defenders on the wall paid them no mind at first. When the Tang troops advanced toward the city, a hail of arrows rained down from the walls, and indeed countless Tang soldiers died. Because of this, the Tang troops all came to know the deadliness of the poison arrows and dared not approach the pass for days.

Mulan said: "The Mysterious Gates proceed from one to two, and from two to three. The One is Tai Yi, benevolence and virtue. It resembles the beginning of spring, the first germination, born of wisdom. The Two are symbols: when yang lives, yin dies; when yin lives, yang perishes. This represents the sweeping power of autumn energy. The Three Wonders are Yi, Bing, and Ding—images of the sun, moon, and stars. They shine upon all things, embodying things without omission. When things lack order, they go awry; the principle is the same. The Gates are the eight gates: Rest, Life, Wound, Barrier, Scenery, Death, Alarm, and Opening. When the Three Wonders travel through Rest, Life, Scenery, and Opening, it is auspicious. When they travel through Alarm, Death, Wound, and Barrier, it is inauspicious. Thus the eight gates alternate yin and yang to symbolize humanity; the Three Wonders have pure energy to symbolize heaven. Purple, white, red, yellow, azure, green, and black—the nine energies revolve to symbolize earth. When the Three Wonders travel through an auspicious gate and also encounter the auspicious purple or white energy, it is supreme auspiciousness. When the Three Wonders obtain the gate but not the auspicious energy, it is middle auspiciousness. When one obtains the gate and the energy but not the Three Wonders, it is lower auspiciousness. Anything else is an inauspicious configuration."

The Wonders and the Gates both assist Jia in their movement. But what Jia fears is the killing energy of Geng. Thus when Geng travels to the east and battles with Jia, it is called the Wound Gate. When Geng travels to the south, Jia is vigorous and Geng declines—hence the Scenery Gate. When Geng travels to the west, Geng is vigorous and Jia is imperiled—hence the Alarm Gate and the Death Gate. When Geng arrives in the north, Geng's energy is discharged and Jia obtains nourishment—hence the Rest Gate, the Life Gate, and the Opening Gate."
