It is said that Zhu Tianlu, having taken up the post of a thousand-household commander, practiced archery and horsemanship daily, trained his soldiers, and pursued bandits by night, bringing peace and security to the entire region, with the common people singing his praises without end.

Two years later, in the depths of winter, he was on night patrol in Shuanglong Town and did not return until the fifth watch.

解衣jiě yī解jiě衣yī而ér臥wò偶ǒu得一dé yī得dé一yī夢mèng其qí狀zhuàng甚shèn凶xiōng醒來xǐng lái醒xǐng恍惚，等待天明，叫丫環快請小姐出來lái心神xīn shén心xīn神shén恍惚huǎng hū恍huǎng惚hū等待děng dài等děng待dài天明tiān míng天tiān明míng叫jiào丫環yā huán丫yā環huán快kuài請qǐng小姐xiǎo jiě小xiǎo姐jiě出來chū lái出chū答dá話huà

He took off his clothes and lay down, and happened to have a dream of a very ominous nature. Waking up in a daze, he waited for dawn and then ordered a maid to quickly summon the young lady to speak with him.

丫環yā huán丫yā環huán走zǒu至zhì內閣nèi gé內nèi閣gé叫聲jiào shēng叫jiào聲shēng小姐xiǎo jiě小xiǎo姐jiě不要bú yào不bú要yào織機zhī jī織zhī機jī老爺lǎo yé老lǎo爺yé請qǐng你nǐ說話shuō huà說shuō話huà

The maid went to the inner chamber and called out, "Young lady, stop your weaving; the master requests your presence."

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán 「老爺夜來辛苦，今如何起得這樣 早？」即來父親房內請安。天祿道dào老爺lǎo yé老lǎo爺yé夜來yè lái夜yè來lái辛苦xīn kǔ辛xīn苦kǔ今jīn如何rú hé如rú何hé起qǐ得dé這樣zhè yàng這zhè樣yàng早zǎo即jí父親fù qīn父fù親qīn房fáng內nèi請qǐng安ān天tiān祿lù

Mulan said, "Father, you worked hard through the night. Why are you up so early today?" She then went to her father's room to pay her respects. Tianlu said:

「吾wú兒ér請坐qǐng zuò請qǐng坐zuò你nǐ老父lǎo fù老lǎo父fù今日jīn rì今jīn日rì五更wǔ gēng五wǔ更gēng初頭chū tóu初chū頭tóu偶ǒu得一dé yī得dé一yī夢mèng好生hǎo shēng好hǎo生shēng奇怪qí guài奇qí怪guài我wǒ負fù性xìng聰明cōng míng聰cōng明míng必有bì yǒu必bì有yǒu妙miào解jiě

"My child, please sit. Your old father had a dream just as the fifth watch began today, and it was most strange. You are naturally intelligent, my daughter, and surely can offer a clever interpretation."

遂suì如此rú cǐ如rú此cǐ，這般zhè bān這zhè般bān。木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán「此夢先凶後吉，大喜之兆。父親夢與青羊相鬥，扯斷其尾，而羊心拖出，分明是個‘恙’字。父親明春當有重病臨身。忽有童子歌《採薇》之詩，此詩乃遣戍役之詩，詩中有云：‘不遑寧處，玁狁之故。’當有王命出師北征也。‘憂心孔疚，我行不來。’言日月久遠，回期無定。‘楊柳依依，雨雪霏霏。載渴載飢，莫知我哀。’是勤勞之甚，王事不可緩也。那墜地羊兒忽化為熊，來咬父親，是病痊而有生子之兆。詩云：‘為熊為羆，男子之祥。’」天祿聽了，哈哈大笑道dào夢mèng先xiān凶xiōng後hòu吉jí大喜dà xǐ大dà喜xǐ之兆zhī zhào之zhī兆zhào父親fù qīn父fù親qīn與yǔ青qīng羊yáng相鬥xiāng dòu相xiāng鬥dòu扯chě斷duàn其qí尾wěi而ér心xīn拖出tuō chū拖tuō出chū分明是fēn míng shì分fēn明míng是shì個gè恙yàng字zì明春míng chūn春chūn當dāng有yǒu重病zhòng bìng重zhòng病bìng臨lín身shēn忽hū童子tóng zǐ童tóng子zǐ歌gē採cǎi薇wēi詩shī乃nǎi遣qiǎn戍shù役yì中有zhōng yǒu中zhōng云yún不遑bù huáng不bù遑huáng寧níng處chǔ玁xiǎn狁yǔn故gù王命wáng mìng王wáng命mìng出師chū shī師shī北běi征zhēng也yě憂心yōu xīn憂yōu孔kǒng疚jiù我wǒ行xíng不來bù lái來lái言yán日rì月yuè久遠jiǔ yuǎn久jiǔ遠yuǎn回huí期qī無wú定dìng楊柳yáng liǔ楊yáng柳liǔ依依yī yī依yī雨雪yǔ xuě雨yǔ雪xuě霏霏fēi fēi霏fēi載zài渴kě飢jī莫mò知zhī哀āi勤勞qín láo勤qín勞láo甚shèn事shì不可bù kě可kě緩huǎn那nà墜地zhuì dì墜zhuì地dì兒ér化huà為wéi熊xióng咬yǎo痊quán而有ér yǒu生子shēng zǐ生shēng羆pí男子nán zǐ男nán祥xiáng天tiān祿lù聽了tīng le聽tīng了le哈哈大笑hā hā dà xiào哈hā笑xiào

He then told her the dream in detail, point by point. Mulan said: “This dream is ominous at first but auspicious in the end, a sign of great joy. Father, you dreamed of wrestling with a green goat and tearing off its tail, while the goat's heart was dragged out; this clearly forms the character ‘yang’ [illness]. You, Father, shall have a severe illness come upon you next spring. Then, a youth suddenly sang the poem ‘Gathering Bracken’ [Cai Wei]. This poem is a song for soldiers dispatched on garrison duty, and within it, it says: ‘No leisure to rest in peace, because of the Xianyun.’ This means there will be a royal command to dispatch troops for a northern expedition. ‘Our hearts are deeply sorrowful, yet we cannot return.’ This speaks of the long passage of months and years, with no fixed date for return. ‘The willows shed their tears, the rain and snow fly thick. Possessed by thirst and hunger, none knows our grief.’ This reflects the extremity of arduous toil, meaning the King's business cannot be delayed. That goat which fell to the ground suddenly transformed into a bear and came to bite you, Father, which signifies recovery from the illness and is an omen of giving birth to a son. As the Book of Odes says: ‘To dream of brown bears and grizzly bears is an auspicious sign of bearing a son.’” Hearing this, Tianlu laughed heartily and said:

「食shí君jūn之zhī祿lù，當dāng分fēn君之憂yōu，雖有suī yǒu雖suī恙，何足懼！不孝有yǒu重zhòng恙yàng無後為大。吾年已五十，晚年生子，亦復何hé足zú懼jù不孝有三bú xiào yǒu sān不bú孝xiào三sān無後為大wú hòu wéi dà無wú後hòu為wéi大dà吾wú年nián已yǐ五十wǔ shí五wǔ十shí晚年wǎn nián晚wǎn生子shēng zǐ生shēng子zǐ亦yì復fù憾hàn哉zāi

"One who eats the ruler's stipend should share the ruler's worries. Though I may be seriously ill, what is there to fear! Of the three unfilial acts, having no heir is the worst. I am already fifty, and if I father a son in my later years, what regret could there be!"

木蘭mù lán聽了父親之言，暗暗下淚，退入機房去了。自此木mù蘭lán聽了tīng le聽tīng了le父親fù qīn午之後，卻向後園走馬射箭，暗有代父fù親qīn征之zhī言yán暗暗àn àn暗àn下xià淚lèi退tuì入rù機房jī fáng機jī房fáng去了qù le去qù自此zì cǐ自zì此cǐ早zǎo夜yè織布zhī bù織zhī布bù日rì午wǔ之後zhī hòu後hòu卻què向後xiàng hòu向xiàng園yuán走馬zǒu mǎ走zǒu馬mǎ射箭shè jiàn射shè箭jiàn有yǒu代父dài fù代dài出征chū zhēng出chū征zhēng之意zhī yì意yì

Mulan shed silent tears upon hearing her father's words and withdrew to her loom room. From then on, she wove cloth day and night, and after noon each day, she rode and practiced archery in the back garden, secretly harboring the intention of joining the campaign in her father's place.

到了dào le到dào了le新春xīn chūn新xīn春chūn時節shí jié時shí昌節jié度使衙門賀節，尉遲寶林待以上賓之禮，天tiān祿lù往wǎng武昌wǔ chāng武wǔ昌chāng節度使jié dù shǐ度dù使shǐ衙門yá mén衙yá門mén賀hè尉wèi遲chí寶bǎo林lín待dài以上yǐ shàng以yǐ上shàng賓bīn之zhī禮lǐ職zhí守shǒu自居zì jū自zì居jū不敢bù gǎn不bù敢gǎn抗禮kàng lǐ抗kàng天祿tiān lù

When the New Year season arrived, Tianlu went to the Wuchang Jiedushi's office to offer holiday greetings. Yuchi Baolin treated him with the courtesy due an honored guest, but Tianlu, mindful of his own official position, dared not accept such equal treatment.

寶bǎo林道lín dào林lín道dào「我家wǒ jiā我wǒ貴，當與兄家jiā富貴fù guì富fù貴guì當dāng與yǔ兄xiōng共gòng之zhī奈何nài hé奈nài何hé過guò謙qiān

Baolin said, "Our families share wealth and honor, so why be overly modest!"

留liú天tiān祿lù在zài衙yá中zhōng住zhù了liǎo數shù日rì。

He kept Tianlu as a guest in the office for several days.

家人jiā rén朱明私將兵房科王鶴松，去年老家jiā爺來看，他便追索規矩銀若干，說與衙中用事之人rén朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng私sī將兵jiāng bīng將jiāng兵bīng房fáng科kē王wáng鶴松hè sōng鶴hè松sōng去年qù nián去qù年nián老家lǎo jiā老lǎo爺yé來看lái kàn來lái看kàn他tā便biàn追索zhuī suǒ追zhuī索suǒ規矩guī jǔ規guī矩jǔ銀yín若干ruò gān若ruò干gān說shuō與yǔ衙yá中zhōng用事yòng shì用yòng事shì之zhī寶bǎo林lín因而yīn ér因yīn而ér知道zhī dào知zhī道dào

The servant Zhu Ming privately told the military office clerk Wang Hesong that when the old master came to inspect the previous year, Wang had demanded a certain amount of "customary silver" and spoken of it to influential people in the office. Baolin thus learned of the matter.

即jí書shū虎頭hǔ tóu虎hǔ頭tóu牌pái掛guà於wū轅門yuán mén轅yuán門mén之外zhī wài之zhī外wài

He immediately wrote a tiger-head warrant and hung it outside the camp gate.

The warrant read: Wang Hesong of the Military Section has shouted at and berated superior officers, presumptuously wielding power. The Wuchang Prefecture is ordered to severely punish and expel him from office, and he shall never be reinstated.

天tiān祿lù知道zhī dào知zhī道dào即jí責備zé bèi責zé備bèi朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng一番yì fān一yì番fān辭cí了liǎo寶bǎo林lín望wàng雙shuāng龍lóng鎮zhèn而來ér lái而ér來lái

When Tianlu learned of this, he scolded Zhu Ming severely, then took leave of Baolin and set off toward Shuanglong Town.

誰shuí知zhī武昌wǔ chāng武wǔ昌chāng飲酒yǐn jiǔ飲yǐn酒jiǔ過度guò dù過guò度dù加之jiā zhī加jiā之zhī受shòu了liǎo江上jiāng shàng江jiāng上shàng風寒fēng hán風fēng寒hán筋骨jīn gǔ筋jīn骨gǔ疼痛téng tòng疼téng痛tòng日rì重zhòng一日yí rì一yí漸漸jiàn jiàn漸jiàn的de臥床wò chuáng臥wò床chuáng不起bù qǐ不bù起qǐ

But it turned out that he had drunk excessively in Wuchang and, on top of that, caught a chill from the river wind. The pain in his muscles and bones grew worse day by day, and gradually he took to his bed, unable to rise.

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán見jiàn應yīng了liǎo去年qù nián去qù年nián夢mèng兆zhào心xīn下xià著zhù忙máng

Mulan, seeing that the omen from last year's dream had come true, grew anxious at heart.

忽hū朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng報到bào dào報bào到dào大悟dà wù喪吾大dà悟wù山shān喪sāng吾wú大師dà shī師shī來了lái le來lái了le喪吾sāng wú

Suddenly, Zhu Ming announced, "The Great Master Sangwu from Dawu Mountain has arrived."

天tiān祿命lù mìng祿lù命mìng請進來qǐng jìn lái請qǐng進jìn來lái內nèi室shì相xiāng見jiàn

Tianlu ordered him to be invited in and met him in the inner chamber.

喪sāng吾wú道dào： 「老爺lǎo yé此病必是內外兼傷，未可痊愈。聞知木蘭孫兒，這些時在園中習學弓馬，老lǎo爺yé此cǐ病bìng必是bì shì必bì是shì內外nèi wài內nèi外wài兼jiān傷shāng未wèi可kě痊quán愈yù聞wén知zhī木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán孫兒sūn ér孫sūn兒ér這些zhè xiē這zhè些xiē時shí在zài園yuán中zhōng習xí學xué弓馬gōng mǎ弓gōng馬mǎ老僧lǎo sēng僧sēng少shǎo日rì曾céng學得xué dé得dé一桿yì gǎn一yì桿gǎn槍法qiāng fǎ槍qiāng法fǎ我wǒ費fèi三日sān rì三sān工夫gōng fū工gōng夫fū傳chuán與yǔ你nǐ罷bà

Sangwu said, "Your illness, Master, is surely a combination of internal and external injuries, and it may not be easily cured. I hear that young Mulan has been practicing archery and horsemanship in the garden these days. In my youth, I learned a set of spear techniques. Let me spend three days and pass them on to you."

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán大喜dà xǐ大dà喜xǐ

Mulan was overjoyed.

學xué了liǎo二日èr rì，將七十二èr日rì將jiāng七十qī shí七qī十shí二路èr lù路lù鎗qiāng法fǎ件jiàn皆jiē通tōng喪sāng吾wú辭cí回huí大悟dà wù大dà悟wù山shān去了qù le去qù七十二qī shí èr件皆jiàn jiē

After two days of practice, she mastered all seventy-two forms of the spear method. Sangwu then took his leave and returned to Dawu Mountain.

又yòu過了guò le過guò了le二日èr rì二èr日rì木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán仍然如故，在床前時刻不離，或奉湯藥，或奉茶水，略見jiàn父親fù qīn父fù親qīn病勢bìng shì病bìng勢shì仍然réng rán仍réng然rán如故rú gù如rú故gù在zài床chuáng前qián時刻shí kè時shí刻kè不離bù lí不bù離lí或huò奉fèng湯藥tāng yào湯tāng藥yào茶水chá shuǐ茶chá水shuǐ略lüè天tiān祿lù身心shēn xīn身shēn心xīn快kuài暢chàng便biàn向xiàng機上jī shàng機jī上shàng投梭tóu suō投tóu梭suō聲shēng不斷bú duàn斷duàn

Two more days passed. Mulan saw that her father's condition remained unchanged. She stayed by his bedside constantly, serving him decoctions and tea. Whenever she saw that Tianlu was feeling a bit at ease in body and mind, she would go to the loom and ply the shuttle, keeping the sound of weaving continuous.

這一zhè yī這zhè一yī日rì天tiān祿lù見jiàn木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán母子mǔ zǐ母mǔ子zǐ在zài房fáng中zhōng久jiǔ坐zuò不出bù chū不bù出chū有yǒu吞聲tūn shēng吞tūn聲shēng而ér泣qì之zhī狀zhuàng天祿tiān lù

That day, Tianlu noticed that Mulan and her mother had been sitting in the room for a long time without leaving, appearing as if they were choking back tears.

天tiān祿lù心中xīn zhōng心xīn中zhōng想xiǎng道dào「我wǒ病bìng料liào不bù至死zhì sǐ至zhì死sǐ今日jīn rì今jīn日rì略lüè見jiàn順shùn適shì何hé為wéi他tā母子mǔ zǐ母mǔ子zǐ在此zài cǐ在zài此cǐ愁腸chóu cháng愁chóu腸cháng萬狀wàn zhuàng萬wàn狀zhuàng哭kū而不ér bù而ér言yán天祿tiān lù為他wéi tā

Tianlu thought to himself, "My illness likely will not kill me. Today I feel a bit better. Why are mother and daughter sitting here with such desolate hearts, weeping without speaking?"

就jiù開口kāi kǒu開kāi口kǒu問wèn 「將令既至，要我北征，爾等為何隱而不言？難道dào將令jiāng lìng將jiāng令lìng既jì至zhì要yào我wǒ北běi征zhēng爾ěr等děng為何wéi hé為wéi何hé隱yǐn而不ér bù而ér不bù言yán難道nán dào難nán這是zhè shì這zhè是shì瞞得mán dé瞞mán得dé住zhù的de

He then spoke up and asked, "Since the military order has arrived, summoning me to march north, why are you hiding it from me? Do you think this is something that can be kept a secret?"

楊氏yáng shì楊yáng氏shì道dào「相公xiàng gong相xiàng公gong何以hé yǐ何hé以yǐ知之zhī zhī知zhī之zhī

Mrs. Yang said, “Husband, how do you know this?”

天tiān祿lù道dào： 「去年qù nián去qù年nián青qīng羊yáng，料今春必應，予豈忘之zhī夢mèng料liào今春jīn chūn今jīn春chūn必bì應yīng予yǔ豈qǐ忘wàng觀guān你nǐ母子mǔ zǐ母mǔ子zǐ情形qíng xíng情qíng形xíng早已zǎo yǐ早zǎo已yǐ知道zhī dào知zhī天祿tiān lù

Tianlu said, “Last year I dreamed of the green ram, and I expected it would come true this spring. How could I forget? Now, seeing the condition of you and our child, I already knew.”

楊氏yáng shì楊yáng氏shì道dào「尉wèi遲chí元帥yuán shuài元yuán帥shuài軍令jūn lìng軍jūn令lìng前來qián lái前qián來lái命mìng爾ěr為wéi提tí調diào總管zǒng guǎn總zǒng管guǎn之zhī職zhí往wǎng催cuī一yī十二shí èr十shí二èr府fǔ人馬rén mǎ人rén馬mǎ此事cǐ shì此cǐ事shì如何是好rú hé shì hǎo如rú何hé是shì好hǎo一十二yī shí èr

Mrs. Yang said, “General Yuchi’s military order has arrived, appointing you as Chief Controller, to go and muster the troops from twelve prefectures. What are we to do about this?”

天tiān祿lù聽了tīng le聽tīng了le扒bā將jiāng起來qǐ lái起qǐ來lái站立zhàn lì站zhàn立lì不住bú zhù不bú住zhù又yòu倒下dǎo xià倒dǎo下xià床chuáng去qù一連yì lián一yì連lián數次shù cì數shù次cì天祿tiān lù

Hearing this, Tianlu struggled to get up, but could not stand steady and fell back onto the bed, several times in a row.

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán大叫dà jiào大dà叫jiào道dào爹爹diē diē爹diē保重bǎo zhòng保bǎo重zhòng

Mulan cried out loudly, “Father, take care of yourself!”

天tiān祿lù道dào： 「將令jiāng lìng將jiāng令lìng如rú山shān豈可qǐ kě豈qǐ可kě怠dài玩wán

Tianlu said, “Military orders are as unyielding as a mountain. How can I be negligent or trifling?”

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán跪在guì zài跪guì在zài床chuáng前qián叫聲jiào shēng叫jiào聲shēng！孩兒一言相商，望爹爹diē diē爹diē聽。孩兒hái ér孩hái兒ér一言yì yán一yì言yán相xiāng商shāng望wàng細xì聽tīng今年jīn nián今jīn年nián十四歲shí sì suì十shí四sì歲suì兵書bīng shū兵bīng書shū戰zhàn策cè般般bān bān般bān通曉tōng xiǎo通tōng曉xiǎo走馬zǒu mǎ走zǒu馬mǎ射箭shè jiàn射shè箭jiàn件jiàn一十四yī shí sì

Mulan knelt before the bed and said, “Father! Your child has something to discuss with you. Please listen carefully. I am now fourteen years old. I understand every military text and strategy, and in horse-riding and archery, each skill

I have mastered them all.

前日qián rì前qián吾傳我一桿槍法，神出鬼沒，情願女扮男粧，代父出征。 依去年青羊之夢，父親定有生子之兆，今日rì喪sāng吾wú傳chuán我wǒ一桿yì gǎn一yì桿gǎn槍法qiāng fǎ槍qiāng法fǎ神出鬼沒shén chū guǐ méi神shén出chū鬼guǐ沒méi情qíng願yuàn女nǚ扮bàn男nán粧zhuāng代父dài fù代dài父fù出征chū zhēng征zhēng依yī去年qù nián去qù年nián青qīng羊yáng之zhī夢mèng父親fù qīn親qīn定dìng有yǒu生子shēng zǐ生shēng子zǐ之兆zhī zhào兆zhào今日jīn rì今jīn病bìng未wèi可kě認為rèn wéi認rèn為wéi禍huò也yě

The other day, Sangwu taught me a set of spear techniques, elusive and extraordinary. I am willing to disguise myself as a man and go on the campaign in my father’s place. According to last year’s dream of the green ram, it foretells that Father will have a son. Your present illness should not be seen as a misfortune.”

Hearing this, Tianlu thought to himself, “When Mulan was eight, she already disguised herself as a boy and studied Zen with Sangwu. Now at fourteen, she is versed in poetry and classics, and her martial skills are outstanding. Even if she goes on the campaign, she is capable. Moreover, before she was born, I dreamed at night that the spirit of Mulan Mountain descended to the world. She is surely destined to become an extraordinary woman.”

遂suì將jiāng頭tóu點了diǎn le一點diǎn了le一點yì diǎn一yì叫聲jiào shēng叫jiào聲shēng我wǒ兒ér起來qǐ lái起qǐ來lái

He then nodded his head and said, “My child, rise!”

即jí命mìng丫環yā huán丫yā環huán喚huàn朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng進來jìn lái進jìn來lái

He immediately ordered the maid to call Zhu Ming in.

朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng走zǒu至zhì床chuáng前qián雙shuāng膝xī跪下guì xià跪guì下xià叫聲jiào shēng叫jiào聲shēng

Zhu Ming went to the bedside, knelt on both knees, and said,

「老爺lǎo yé！元帥將令甚急，老lǎo爺yé元帥yuán shuài元yuán帥shuài將令jiāng lìng將jiāng令lìng甚急shèn jí甚shèn急jí抱病bào bìng抱bào病bìng如何rú hé如rú何hé是shì了liǎo

“Master! The general’s orders are very urgent. You are ill. What is to be done?”

天tiān祿lù道dào： 「你nǐ小姐xiǎo jiě小xiǎo姐jiě要yào女nǚ扮bàn男nán粧zhuāng代dài我wǒ出征chū zhēng出chū征zhēng保他同去，切不可kě保bǎo他tā同去tóng qù同tóng去qù切qiè不可bù kě不bù走漏消息zǒu lòu xiāo xī走zǒu漏lòu消xiāo息xī天祿tiān lù

Tianlu said, “Your young mistress wants to disguise herself as a man and go on the campaign in my place. You may escort her there, but on no account must you leak this news.”

朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng道dào「小姐xiǎo jiě大賢大孝，小xiǎo姐jiě大dà賢xián孝xiào小人xiǎo rén人rén願yuàn生死shēng sǐ生shēng死sǐ相依xiāng yī相xiāng依yī不消bù xiāo不bù消xiāo老爺lǎo yé老lǎo爺yé吩咐fēn fù吩fēn咐fù

Zhu Ming said, “The young mistress is most virtuous and filial. I am willing to follow her through life and death. There is no need for you to instruct me, master.”

天tiān祿lù大喜dà xǐ大dà喜xǐ天祿tiān lù

Tianlu was overjoyed.

楊氏yáng shì楊yáng氏shì道dào「朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng用心保小姐出征，你nǐ用心yòng xīn用yòng兒女，我自然另眼相看，你也不必罣心xīn保bǎo小姐xiǎo jiě小xiǎo姐jiě出征chū zhēng出chū征zhēng你的nǐ de的de妻子qī zǐ妻qī子zǐ兒女ér nǚ兒ér女nǚ我wǒ自然zì rán自zì然rán另眼相看lìng yǎn xiāng kàn另lìng眼yǎn相xiāng看kàn也yě不必bú bì不bú必bì罣guà

Mrs. Yang said, “Zhu Ming, if you diligently escort the young mistress on the campaign, I will naturally treat your wife and children with special consideration. You need not worry about them either.”

天tiān祿lù道dào： 「你nǐ明日míng rì明míng起傳令，吩咐人馬在教場伺候，說是大少爺出門多年，昨日rì早起zǎo qǐ早zǎo兵法武藝，件件學全。老爺抱病，少爺代父出征，演兵數日，就要起qǐ傳令chuán lìng傳chuán令lìng吩咐fēn fù吩fēn咐fù人馬rén mǎ人rén馬mǎ在zài教場jiào chǎng教jiào場chǎng伺候cì hou伺cì候hou說是shuō shì說shuō是shì大dà少爺shǎo yé少shǎo爺yé出門chū mén出chū門mén多年duō nián多duō年nián昨日zuó rì昨zuó回來huí lái回huí來lái兵法bīng fǎ兵bīng法fǎ武藝wǔ yì武wǔ藝yì件jiàn學xué全quán老爺lǎo yé老lǎo抱病bào bìng抱bào病bìng代父dài fù代dài父fù出征chū zhēng征zhēng演yǎn數shù就要jiù yào就jiù要yào起程qǐ chéng程chéng天祿tiān lù

Tianlu said, “Tomorrow at daybreak, you will issue the order. Instruct the troops to assemble at the training ground, and say that the eldest young master has been away from home for many years and returned yesterday, having mastered every art of war and martial skill. The master is ill, so the young master will go on the campaign in his father’s place. After drilling the troops for a few days, they will set out.”

Mulan stayed with her parents for a night. Rising at the fifth watch, she shaved the hair at her temples, removed her pearl earrings, donned a silver helmet, wore white armor, and put on leather boots. She went into the room, bowed to her parents, and then left the official residence.

騎qí了liǎo一疋yì pǐ白馬，手執銀槍，威風凜凜，儼然一yì疋pǐ白馬bái mǎ白bái馬mǎ手shǒu執zhí銀yín槍qiāng威風凜凜wēi fēng lǐn lǐn威wēi風fēng凜lǐn儼然yǎn rán儼yǎn然rán一個yí gè個gè趙子龍zhào zǐ lóng趙zhào子zǐ龍lóng出世chū shì出chū世shì同tóng朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng到dào教場jiào chǎng教jiào場chǎng而來ér lái而ér來lái

Riding a white horse and holding a silver spear, she was awe-inspiring and majestic, just like a reincarnation of Zhao Zilong. Together with Zhu Ming, she arrived at the training ground.

Mulan issued an order: first drill the battle formations, then practice horse-riding and archery.

After the troops finished drilling, Mulan mounted her horse, took up her long spear, and

場chǎng中也zhōng yě中zhōng也yě演yǎn回，將七十二路槍qiāng一回yì huí一yì回huí試起，那看的兵將jiāng七十qī shí七qī十shí二路èr lù二èr路lù槍法qiāng fǎ法fǎ一一yī yī試shì起qǐ那nà看kàn的de兵bīng個個gè gè個gè喝彩hè cǎi喝hè彩cǎi七十二qī shí èr

also demonstrated spear techniques on the training ground, running through all seventy-two forms of the spear method one by one. Every soldier and officer watching cheered in admiration.

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán又yòu開kāi弓gōng連發lián fā連lián發fā一yī十六shí liù十shí六liù矢shǐ俱jù中zhōng紅心hóng xīn紅hóng心xīn眾zhòng將jiāng喝hē聲shēng如rú雷léi一十六yī shí liù

Mulan then drew her bow and shot sixteen arrows in succession, all hitting the bullseye. The officers’ applause thundered like thunder.

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán傳令chuán lìng傳chuán令lìng眾zhòng士卒shì zú士shì卒zú明日míng rì明míng到衙中，領取安家錢糧，再過二日rì早晨zǎo chén早zǎo晨chén齊qí到dào衙yá中zhōng領取lǐng qǔ領lǐng取qǔ安家ān jiā安ān家jiā錢糧qián liáng錢qián糧liáng再過zài guò再zài過guò二日èr rì二èr就要jiù yào就jiù要yào起程qǐ chéng起qǐ程chéng

Mulan ordered all the soldiers to gather at the official residence tomorrow morning to receive their family allotment and provisions. They would set out in two more days.

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán回huí中，喪吾和尚、鐵冠道人不約而至zhì衙yá中zhōng喪sāng吾wú和尚hé shàng和hé尚shàng鐵tiě冠guān道人dào rén道dào人rén不bù約yuē而ér

Mulan returned to the residence, where Monk Sangwu and Iron-Cap Taoist arrived without prior appointment.

俱jù對duì木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán說道shuō dào說shuō道dào聞wén少爺shǎo yé少shǎo爺yé出征chū zhēng出chū征zhēng我wǒ等děng先來xiān lái先xiān來lái賀喜hè xǐ賀hè喜xǐ

They both said to Mulan, “We hear that the young master is going on a campaign. We have come ahead to offer our congratulations.”

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán道dào「此事cǐ shì此cǐ事shì出於chū wū出chū於wū無奈wú nài無wú奈nài何hé喜xǐ可kě賀hè

Mulan said, “This matter arises from necessity. What is there to congratulate?”

鐵tiě冠guān道人dào rén道dào人rén曰yuē「少爺shǎo yé少shǎo爺yé此cǐ去qù忠孝zhōng xiào忠zhōng孝xiào雙全shuāng quán雙shuāng全quán如何rú hé如rú何hé不bù賀hè

Iron-Cap Taoist said, “In this journey, the young master will achieve both loyalty and filial piety. How could we not congratulate you?”

喪sāng吾wú曰yuē： 「少爺shǎo yé少shǎo爺yé此cǐ要從五臺山經過，五臺山上有一松靖道人，在白雲洞中修養，是我早年相知的故友。我有書信一封，煩你親自送去qù要yào從cóng五wǔ臺tái山shān經過jīng guò經jīng過guò山上shān shàng上shàng有一yǒu yī有yǒu一yī松sōng靖jìng道人dào rén道dào人rén在zài白雲bái yún白bái雲yún洞dòng中zhōng修養xiū yǎng修xiū養yǎng是shì我wǒ早年zǎo nián早zǎo年nián相知xiāng zhī相xiāng知zhī的de故友gù yǒu故gù友yǒu我有wǒ yǒu書信shū xìn書shū信xìn一封yì fēng封fēng煩fán你nǐ親自qīn zì親qīn自zì送去sòng qù送sòng代dài多多duō duō多duō拜bài

Sangwu said, “On this journey, the young master will pass by Mount Wutai. On Mount Wutai there is a Taoist named Songjing, who cultivates himself in the White Cloud Cave. He is an old friend of mine from earlier years. I have a letter here, and I would trouble you to deliver it personally and convey my warm regards.”

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán道dào「孩兒hái ér孩hái兒ér領lǐng命mìng

Mulan said, “Your child accepts the order.”

鐵tiě冠guān道dào人道rén dào人rén 「我wǒ也有yě yǒu也yě囊一封，少爺遇有yǒu錦囊jǐn náng錦jǐn囊náng一封yì fēng一yì封fēng少爺shǎo yé少shǎo爺yé遇yù逆nì難nán不可解bù kě jiě不bù可kě解jiě之zhī時shí打開dǎ kāi打dǎ開kāi看kàn能néng化huà凶xiōng為wéi吉jí除chú禍huò呈chéng祥xiáng

Iron-Cap Taoist said, “I also have a brocade bag with a letter inside. When the young master encounters a difficulty that seems insurmountable, open it, and it will turn misfortune into fortune and dispel calamity to bring good luck.”

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán拜謝bài xiè拜bài謝xiè將jiāng二èr封書fēng shū封fēng書shū信xìn收好shōu hǎo收shōu好hǎo

Mulan bowed in thanks and carefully put away the two letters.

到了dào le到dào了le起程qǐ chéng起qǐ程chéng之zhī日rì楊氏yáng shì楊yáng氏shì安排ān pái安ān排pái酒席jiǔ xí酒jiǔ席xí與yǔ木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán餞行jiàn xíng餞jiàn行xíng又yòu吩咐fēn fù吩fēn咐fù朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng一番yì fān一yì番fān言語yán yǔ言yán語yǔ

On the day of departure, Mrs. Yang prepared a farewell banquet for Mulan and also gave Zhu Ming a set of instructions.

天tiān祿lù勉強miǎn qiáng勉miǎn強qiáng出chū房fáng送sòng木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán起程qǐ chéng起qǐ程chéng天祿tiān lù

Tianlu forced himself to leave his room and saw Mulan off on her journey.

一家yì jiā一yì家jiā三口sān kǒu三sān口kǒu兒ér大哭dà kū大dà哭kū不止bù zhǐ不bù止zhǐ

All three members of the family wept bitterly without end.

朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng上前shàng qián： 「人馬俱在教場伺候，請少爺上shàng前qián說道shuō dào說shuō道dào人馬rén mǎ人rén馬mǎ俱jù在zài教場jiào chǎng教jiào場chǎng伺候cì hou伺cì候hou請qǐng少爺shǎo yé少shǎo爺yé上馬shàng mǎ

Zhu Ming stepped forward and said, “The troops and horses are all assembled at the training ground awaiting orders. Please mount your horse, young master.”

祇qí得dé叩kòu別bié父母fù mǔ父fù母mǔ木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán上馬shàng mǎ廳上shàng，點齊人馬mǎ向xiàng演武yǎn wǔ演yǎn響，俱望武wǔ廳tīng點diǎn齊人qí rén齊qí，鐵冠道人rén三聲sān shēng三sān聲shēng炮pào響xiǎng俱jù望wàng武昌wǔ chāng昌chāng大道dà dào大dà道dào而來ér lái而ér來lái鐵tiě冠guān道人dào rén同tóng喪sāng吾wú並bìng八位bā wèi八bā位wèi賢士xián shì賢xián士shì送sòng至zhì驛yì旅lǚ河hé回huí

Mulan had no choice but to kowtow and bid farewell to her parents. She mounted her horse, went to the martial arts hall, mustered the troops, and after three cannon blasts, they all set off toward the main road to Wuchang. Iron-Cap Taoist, Sangwu, and the eight worthy scholars escorted them as far as Yilü River before returning.

大約dà yuē大dà約yuē行xíng日，到了liǎo二日èr rì二èr日rì到了dào le蘭同朱明到dào武昌wǔ chāng武wǔ昌chāng省城shěng chéng省shěng城chéng木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán同tóng朱明zhū míng朱zhū明míng節度使jié dù shǐ節jié度dù使shǐ轅門yuán mén轅yuán門mén先將xiān jiāng先xiān將jiāng父親fù qīn父fù親qīn手shǒu書shū逞chěng進jìn

After traveling for about two days, they arrived at the provincial capital of Wuchang. Mulan and Zhu Ming went to the military governor’s headquarters and first presented her father’s personal letter.

寶bǎo林lín拆開chāi kāi拆chāi開kāi祇qí見jiàn內nèi書shū云yún 愚弟yú dì愚yú弟dì屢lǚ收shōu大人提拔之恩ēn公gōng大人dà rén大dà人rén提拔tí bá提tí拔bá之恩zhī ēn之zhī理lǐ宜yí殺身shā shēn殺shā身shēn報國bào guó報bào國guó

Baolin opened it and read the following: “This unworthy younger brother has repeatedly received your Excellency’s gracious favor and promotion. I ought to sacrifice my life to repay the nation.”

無奈wú nài無wú奈nài身shēn荷重hé zhòng荷hé重zhòng病bìng不能bù néng不bù能néng轉zhuǎn側cè

“But unfortunately I am stricken with a severe illness and cannot even turn over in bed.”

特遣tè qiǎn特tè遣qiǎn

幼子yòu zǐ幼yòu蘭，頂名代役，祈大人見字如面，幸勿叱退，則父子zǐ木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán頂dǐng名míng代役dài yì代dài役yì祈qí大人dà rén大dà人rén見jiàn字zì如rú面miàn幸xìng勿wù叱chì退tuì則zé父子fù zǐ父fù感恩gǎn ēn感gǎn恩ēn無wú既jì矣yǐ

“My young son, Mulan, will take my place and serve under my name. I pray that upon reading this letter as if seeing me in person, you will not dismiss him. Then both father and son will be eternally grateful.”

寶bǎo林lín看kàn罷bà，叫jiào手下shǒu xià手shǒu下xià人rén請qǐng木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán進來jìn lái進jìn來lái

After reading it, Baolin ordered his attendants to invite Mulan in.

木蘭mù lán步入月臺上，雙膝跪下，口稱侄兒，木mù蘭lán步入bù rù步bù入rù月yuè臺上tái shàng臺tái上shàng雙shuāng膝xī跪下guì xià跪guì下xià口kǒu稱chēng侄zhí兒ér叩頭kòu tóu叩kòu頭tóu侄兒zhí ér

Mulan walked onto the platform, knelt on both knees, and said, “Your nephew, Mulan, kowtows to you.”

寶bǎo林lín見jiàn木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán少年shào nián少shào年nián將軍jiāng jūn將jiāng軍jūn心xīn手扶起，叫手下xià歡喜huān xǐ歡huān喜xǐ用yòng手shǒu扶起fú qǐ扶fú起qǐ叫jiào手下shǒu xià人rén看kàn坐zuò

Baolin saw that Mulan was a young general and was pleased in his heart. He helped her up with his hand and ordered his attendants to offer her a seat.

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán乃nǎi謙遜qiān xùn謙qiān遜xùn一回yì huí一yì回huí方fāng敢gǎn就坐jiù zuò就jiù坐zuò

Mulan humbly declined once before daring to take the seat.

寶bǎo林lín問wèn道dào： 「令尊lìng zūn令lìng尊zūn大人dà rén大dà人rén真zhēn個gè有病yǒu bìng有yǒu病bìng否fǒu

Baolin asked, “Does your honored father truly have an illness?”

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán說shuō「真zhēn個gè有病yǒu bìng有yǒu病bìng

Mulan said, “He truly has an illness.”

寶bǎo林道lín dào林lín道dào「若是ruò shì若ruò是shì別人bié rén別bié人rén就要jiù yào就jiù要yào差chà官guān看kàn驗yàn你我nǐ wǒ你nǐ我wǒ祖孫zǔ sūn祖zǔ孫sūn父子fù zǐ父fù子zǐ相交xiāng jiāo相xiāng交jiāo親qīn同tóng骨肉gǔ ròu骨gǔ肉ròu料liào無wú虛假xū jiǎ虛xū假jiǎ賢侄xián zhí賢xián侄zhí有yǒu多少duō shǎo多duō少shǎo歲數suì shù歲suì數shù

Baolin said, “If it were someone else, I would send an officer to verify. But with our relationship—like grandfather and grandson, like father and son—as close as flesh and bone, I trust there is no falsehood. Worthy nephew, how old are you?”

木蘭mù lán木mù蘭lán道dào「侄zhí兒ér今年jīn nián今jīn年nián一yī十四歲shí sì suì十shí四sì歲suì一十四yī shí sì

Mulan said, “Your nephew is fourteen years old this year.”
