The meeting between ruler and minister originates in the Mandate of Heaven. Deep grace between father and son, deep love between brothers, springs from true nature. A good marital match, though determined by fate, allows for seeking a virtuous lady, choosing a suitable partner, and parting with a jealous wife. Only with friends must one select those who assist in goodness. Body, mind, nature, and life can complement one another; life and death, benefit and harm, can be mutually rescued. Befriending the wrong person brings lifelong defilement. Therefore a state's rise or fall depends on powerful ministers; a family's success or failure hinges on close friends. The ancients said: 'Those who can flatter me will surely be able to harm me. Such persons should not be befriended. Those willing to correct me will surely be willing to help me. Such scholars should be befriended.' There is also a type of person who feigns virtue and masks his appearance — uttering scriptural words with a heart like scorpions and snakes, pandering to others' preferences, spying on their temperaments, speaking to please, and acting to satisfy. These are ones who speak plausibly but oppose what they endorse, who feign reverence as if to overawe Heaven — deserving condemnation by not associating with gentlemen. You should avoid them as enemies, keep distant from them as from tigers. If you associate with them, your person, family, and life will be ruined by them."
