The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Ngày xửa ngày xưa, có bốn chú thỏ con, tên là Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail và Peter.

Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter.

Chúng sống cùng mẹ trong một bờ đất cát, dưới gốc rễ của một cây thông rất lớn.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

Một buổi sáng, mẹ chúng nói:

One morning their Mother said:

"Các con ơi, các con có thể ra đồng hoặc xuống con đường, nhưng tuyệt đối không được vào vườn của ông McGregor. Cha các con đã gặp tai nạn ở đó; ông ấy đã bị bà McGregor bỏ vào bánh nhân."

"Now, my dears, you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden. Your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor."

Rồi bà cầm giỏ đi xuyên qua rừng đến tiệm bánh mì.

Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the woods to the baker's.

Flopsy, Mopsy và Cotton-tail, vốn là những chú thỏ ngoan ngoãn, đi xuống con đường để hái dâu đen.

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries.

Nhưng Peter, đứa rất nghịch ngợm, chạy thẳng đến vườn của ông McGregor và chui qua dưới cánh cổng.

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden, and squeezed under the gate.

Đầu tiên nó ăn một ít rau xà lách và đậu, rồi ăn thêm mấy củ cải.

First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;

Nó bắt đầu thấy hơi buồn nôn, nên đi tìm mùi tây.

And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.

Nhưng vòng qua cuối giàn dưa chuột, ai ngờ nó lại gặp đúng ông McGregor!

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

Ông McGregor nhảy vọt dậy và đuổi theo Peter, vừa vung cái cào vừa hét:

Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out,

"Đứng lại, đồ trộm!"

"Stop, thief!"

Peter rất hoảng sợ.

Peter was most dreadfully frightened.

Nó chạy khắp nơi trong vườn, vì đã quên đường trở ra cổng.

He rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

Nó đánh mất một chiếc giày trong đám cải bắp, và chiếc giày kia trong đám khoai tây.

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.

Peter cứ chạy mãi, và cuối cùng bị vướng vào lưới cây lý gai vì những chiếc cúc to trên chiếc áo khoác của nó.

Peter ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket.

He gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears.

But his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who flew to him in great excitement, and implored him to exert himself.

Peter vùng vẫy thoát ra khỏi chiếc áo khoác đúng lúc và bỏ chạy.

Peter wriggled out just in time, leaving his jacket behind him.

Nó tìm thấy một cái cửa trong bức tường, nhưng cửa đã khóa.

He found a door in a wall; but it was locked.

Cuối cùng nó đến được cổng, chui qua bên dưới, và chạy hết đường về nhà.

At last he found his way back to the gate, slipped underneath, and ran all the way home.

Nó mệt đến nỗi ngã lăn ra sàn hầm thỏ và nhắm mắt lại.

He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand on the floor of the rabbit-hole, and shut his eyes.

Mẹ đang bận nấu ăn.

His mother was busy cooking.

Bà tự hỏi không biết quần áo của nó đã đi đâu.

She wondered what he had done with his clothes.

Đây là chiếc áo khoác và đôi giày thứ hai mà Peter đã đánh mất trong vòng hai tuần!

It was the second jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortnight!

Peter không được khỏe tối hôm đó, nên mẹ cho nó nằm nghỉ và pha trà hoa cúc cho uống.

Peter was not very well during the evening, so his mother put him to bed, and made some camomile tea.

Còn Flopsy, Mopsy và Cotton-tail thì được ăn bánh mì, sữa và dâu đen cho bữa tối.

But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper.
