Little Red Riding Hood
-
Once upon a time there was a sweet little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, who would have given the child just about anything.
-
Once she gave her a little cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that the girl didn't want to wear anything else; and so she was called Little Red Riding Hood.
-
One day her mother said to her:
-
"Come here, Little Red Riding Hood, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine, take them to your grandmother; she is ill and weak, and they will do her good. Set out before it gets hot, and when you go, walk properly and quietly, do not run off the path, or you might fall and break the bottle, and then grandmother will get nothing. And when you go into her room, don't forget to say 'good morning' and don't go looking in all the corners first." "I will be very careful," said Little Red Riding Hood to her mother, and gave her her hand on it. Now grandmother lived out in the woods, half a mile from the village. And as soon as Little Red Riding Hood entered the woods, a wolf met her. But Little Red Riding Hood did not know what a wicked and cunning beast he was, and was not at all afraid of him. "Good day, Little Red Riding Hood," he said. "Thank you kindly, wolf."
-
"Where are you going so early, Little Red Riding Hood?"
-
"To grandmother's."
-
"And what have you got under your apron?"
-
"Cake and wine. Yesterday was baking day for us, so let poor sick grandmother have something to comfort and strengthen her."
-
"And where does your grandmother live, Little Red Riding Hood?"
-
"A good quarter of a mile further on in the woods, her house stands under three large oak trees, and the hazel bushes are just below, as you surely know," answered Little Red Riding Hood.
-
The wolf thought to himself:
-
"What a tender, sweet young creature, what a nice plump mouthful—she will taste even better than the old woman. I must be crafty so as to catch them both."
-
He walked for a little while by the side of Little Red Riding Hood, and then he said:
-
"Look, Little Red Riding Hood, see what beautiful flowers are growing all around, why don't you look about you? I do believe you don't even hear how sweetly the little birds are singing? You walk along as solemnly as if you were marching to school, and yet everything in the woods is so joyful."
-
Little Red Riding Hood raised her eyes, and when she saw how the sunbeams danced through the trees and how many beautiful flowers grew everywhere, she thought:
-
"If I bring grandmother a fresh bouquet, that will please her too; it is still early, I will still arrive in good time."
-
So she ran from the path into the woods to look for flowers.
-
And whenever she picked one, she fancied that a still prettier one grew further on, and ran after it, going deeper and deeper into the forest.
-
But the wolf ran straight to the grandmother's house and knocked at the door.
-
"Who's there?"
-
"It is Little Red Riding Hood," said the wolf, "I have brought you some cake and wine, open the door."
-
"Lift the latch," cried the grandmother, "I am too weak and cannot get up."
-
The wolf lifted the latch, the door sprang open, and without saying another word, he went straight to the grandmother's bed and swallowed her up.
-
Then he put on her clothes, dressed himself in her cap, laid himself in bed and drew the curtains.
-
Meanwhile, Little Red Riding Hood had been running about picking flowers, and when she had gathered so many that she could carry no more, she remembered her grandmother and set out on the way to her.
-
She was surprised to find the cottage door standing wide open, and when she went into the room, she felt so uneasy that she thought to herself:
-
"Oh dear, why do I feel so anxious today, when usually I love being at grandmother's so much!"
-
She cried out:
-
"Good morning!", but she received no answer.
-
Then she went to the bed and drew back the curtains.
-
There lay her grandmother, with her cap pulled far over her face, and looking very strange.
-
"Oh, grandmother, what big ears you have!"
-
"All the better to hear you with, my child."
-
"Oh, grandmother, what big eyes you have!"
-
"The better to see you with, my dear."
-
"Oh, grandmother, what big hands you have!"
-
"The better to hug you with."
-
"Oh, grandmother, but what a terrible, big mouth you have!"
-
"The better to eat you up with!"
-
And scarcely had the wolf said this, than with one bound he sprang out of bed and swallowed up Little Red Riding Hood.
-
When the wolf had satisfied his appetite, he lay down in the bed again, fell asleep and began to snore very loudly.
-
A huntsman was just passing the house, and thought to himself:
-
"How loudly the old woman is snoring! I must see if she needs anything."
-
He went into the room, and when he came to the bed, he saw that the wolf was lying in it.
-
"So here I find you, you old sinner!" he said. "I have been looking for you for a long time!"
-
Then, just as he was about to raise his gun, it occurred to him that the wolf might have swallowed the grandmother, and that she might still be saved.
-
So he did not fire, but took a pair of scissors and began to cut open the belly of the sleeping wolf.
-
When he had made only two cuts, he saw the little red cap shining; and when he made two more, the girl sprang out and cried:
-
"Ah, how frightened I was! How dark it was inside the wolf's belly!"
-
And after her, the old grandmother came out alive as well, scarcely able to breathe from the stuffiness.
-
Little Red Riding Hood quickly fetched some large stones, with which they filled the wolf's belly; and when he awoke, he wanted to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed at once and fell dead.
-
Then all three were delighted.
-
The huntsman stripped off the wolf's skin and went home with it; the grandmother ate the cake and drank the wine which Little Red Riding Hood had brought, and revived entirely, while Little Red Riding Hood thought to herself:
-
"As long as I live, I will never leave the path by myself to run into the wood, when my mother has forbidden me to do so."
-
They also tell how, another time, when Little Red Riding Hood was taking cakes to her old grandmother again, another wolf spoke to her and tried to entice her off the path.
-
But Little Red Riding Hood was on her guard, went straight ahead on her way, and told her grandmother that she had met a wolf, and that he had wished her a good morning, but with such a wicked look in his eyes that if it had not been on the public road, he would certainly have eaten her up.
-
"Well," said the grandmother, "we will lock the door so that he cannot come in."
-
Soon afterwards the wolf knocked and cried out:
-
"Open the door, grandmother, I am Little Red Riding Hood, I have brought you some cakes."
-
But they kept silent and did not open the door.
-
Then the grey beast crept around the house once or twice, and finally climbed onto the roof; he wanted to wait until evening, when Little Red Riding Hood should go home, so that he could steal after her in the dark and eat her.
-
But the grandmother saw what was in his mind.
-
A large stone trough stood in front of the house, and she said to the girl:
-
"Take the bucket, Little Red Riding Hood. I boiled some sausages yesterday, so fetch the water in which they were cooked, and pour it into the trough."
-
Little Red Riding Hood carried the water until the trough was quite full.
-
Then the smell of the sausages reached the wolf's nose, he sniffed and looked down, and stretched his neck out so far that he could no longer keep his footing on the roof, began to slip, fell straight into the large trough and drowned.
-
And Little Red Riding Hood returned joyfully home, and no one ever did her any harm again.
