1. Scufița Roșie

    Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a sweet little girl, who was loved by everyone who set eyes on her, but most of all by her grandmother, who didn't know what else to give her to make her happy.

Once, her grandmother gave her a cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that the little girl would wear nothing else; so everyone called her "Little Red Riding Hood".

  4. Într-o zi, mama ei îi spuse:

One day, her mother said to her:

"Come, Little Red Riding Hood, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine; take them to your grandmother, for she is sick and weak, and they will do her good. Set out before it gets too hot, and when you go, walk nicely and quietly, and do not stray from the path, otherwise you might fall and break the bottle, and then grandmother would get nothing; and when you go into her room, don't forget to say 'Good morning' and don't start rummaging in all the corners first."

  6. „Voi avea mare grijă”, îi spuse Scufița Roșie mamei sale, dându-i mâna ca zălog.

"I will take great care," Little Red Riding Hood told her mother, giving her hand as a promise.

Grandmother lived in the woods, half a league from the village, and just as Little Red Riding Hood entered the woods, a wolf met her.

Little Red Riding Hood did not know what a wicked beast he was, and was not at all afraid of him.

  9. „Bună ziua, Scufiță Roșie”, spuse el.

"Good day, Little Red Riding Hood," he said.

  10. „Mulțumesc frumos, lupule. ”

    "Thank you kindly, Wolf."

  11. „Încotro așa de devreme, Scufiță Roșie? ”

"Where are you going so early, Little Red Riding Hood?"

  12. „La bunica. ”

    "To grandmother's."

  13. „Ce duci acolo în șorț? ”

"What are you carrying in your apron?"

"Cake and wine; yesterday was baking day, so poor sick grandmother will have something good to give her strength."

  15. „Unde locuiește bunica ta, Scufiță Roșie? ”

"Where does your grandmother live, Little Red Riding Hood?"

"Another quarter of a league further in the woods; her house is under the three large oak trees, and the hazel bushes are right underneath; you must surely know it," answered Little Red Riding Hood.

  17. Lupul își zise în sine:

    The wolf said to himself:

"What a tender, pretty creature! What a young, tasty morsel—she will taste even better than the old woman. I must be crafty to catch them both." He walked a short way beside Little Red Riding Hood, then said:

"Look, Little Red Riding Hood, what beautiful flowers are all around—why don't you look about you? I think, too, that you don't even hear how sweetly the little birds are singing; you walk along so seriously, as if you were going to school, while everything around you in the woods is full of joy." Little Red Riding Hood raised her eyes, and when she saw the sunbeams dancing through the trees and the beautiful flowers growing everywhere, she thought:

"If I were to bring grandmother a bouquet of fresh flowers, that would make her happy too. It is still so early that I will still arrive on time"; so she left the path and ran into the forest to pick flowers.

And every time she picked one, she thought she saw an even prettier one further on, and she ran after it, going deeper and deeper into the forest.

Meanwhile, the wolf ran straight to grandmother's house and knocked at the door.

  23. „Cine e acolo? ”

    "Who is there?"

  24. „Scufița Roșie”, răspunse lupul.

"Little Red Riding Hood," answered the wolf.

  25. „Îți aduc cozonac și vin; deschide ușa. ”

"I'm bringing you cake and wine; open the door."

"Press the latch," cried the grandmother, "I am too weak and cannot get up."

The wolf pressed the latch, the door opened, and without saying a word, he rushed straight to grandmother's bed and swallowed her whole.

Then he put on her clothes, placed her cap on his head, got into bed, and drew the curtains.

Little Red Riding Hood, however, had been running after flowers, and when she gathered so many that she could carry no more, she remembered her grandmother and set out on her way to her.

She was surprised to find the cottage door wide open, and when she entered the room, she felt such a strange feeling that she said to herself:

"Oh dear! How frightened I feel today, when usually I loved being with grandmother so much." She called out:

"Good morning!", but received no answer; so she went to the bed and drew back the curtains.

  33. Acolo zăcea bunica, cu scufița trasă mult peste față, arătând tare ciudat.

There lay her grandmother, with her cap pulled far over her face, looking very strange.

  34. „O, bunică ”, spuse ea, „ce urechi mari ai! ”

"Oh, grandmother," she said, "what big ears you have!"

"All the better to hear you with, my child," was the reply.

  36. „Dar, bunică, ce ochi mari ai! ”, spuse ea.

"But, grandmother, what big eyes you have!" she said.

"All the better to see you with, my dear."

  38. „Dar, bunică, ce mâini mari ai! ”

"But, grandmother, what big hands you have!"

  39. „Ca să te îmbrățișez mai bine. ”

"All the better to hug you with."

"Oh, but, grandmother, what a terribly big mouth you have!"

"All the better to eat you with!" And no sooner had the wolf said these words than in one bound he was out of bed and swallowed Little Red Riding Hood whole.

When the wolf had satisfied his hunger, he got back into bed, fell asleep, and began to snore very loudly.

A huntsman was just passing by the house and said to himself:

"How the old woman is snoring! I must see if she needs anything." He entered the room, and when he drew near the bed, he saw that the wolf was lying in it.

  45. „Aici te găsesc, păcătosule bătrân! ”, spuse el.

"So I find you here, you old sinner!" he said.

"I've been looking for you for so long!" Then, just as he was about to shoot him, it occurred to him that the wolf might have swallowed grandmother and that she could still be saved, so he did not shoot, but took a pair of scissors and began to cut open the sleeping wolf's belly.

After making two snips with the scissors, he saw the red cap shining; he cut twice more, and the little girl jumped out, crying:

"Ah, how frightened I was! How dark it was inside the wolf's belly"; and after that, the old grandmother came out alive, scarcely able to breathe.

Little Red Riding Hood quickly brought some large stones, with which they filled the wolf's belly, and when he woke up, he tried to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed on the spot and fell dead.

  50. Atunci toți trei se bucurară.

    Then all three were overjoyed.

The huntsman skinned the wolf's pelt and took it home; grandmother ate the cake and drank the wine that Little Red Riding Hood had brought, recovering her strength, and Little Red Riding Hood said to herself:

"As long as I live, I will never leave the path on my own to run into the forest when my mother has forbidden me to do so." It is also told that once, when Little Red Riding Hood was taking cakes to her old grandmother again, another wolf approached her and tried to entice her to stray from the path.

Little Red Riding Hood, however, was on her guard, kept straight on her way, and told her grandmother that she had met the wolf, and that he had wished her "good morning," but with such a wicked look in his eyes that if they had not been on the public road, she was sure he would have eaten her.

"Well," said grandmother, "we will lock the door so that he cannot get in."

Shortly afterwards, the wolf knocked at the door and called out:

"Open the door, grandmother, it's Little Red Riding Hood, and I've brought you some cakes." But they did not speak and did not open the door, so the grey brute prowled two or three times around the house and finally jumped onto the roof, intending to wait until Little Red Riding Hood went home in the evening, so he could sneak after her and devour her in the dark.

But grandmother realized what he was planning.

In front of the house stood a large stone trough, so she said to the child:

"Take the bucket, Little Red Riding Hood; yesterday I made sausages, so carry the water in which I boiled them to the trough." Little Red Riding Hood carried water until the large trough was completely full.

Then the smell of the sausages reached the wolf, and he began to sniff and look down, and at last he stretched his neck out so far that he could no longer keep his balance and began to slide; he slid off the roof right into the large trough and drowned.

And Little Red Riding Hood went joyfully home, and no one ever harmed her again.
