1. O FĂCLIE DE PAȘTE

    AN EASTER TORCH

Leiba Zibal, the innkeeper of Podeni, sits lost in thought at a table under the arbor in front of his shop, waiting for the stagecoach, which should have arrived long ago: it is almost an hour late.

The story of Zibal's life is long and far from cheerful; yet, gripped by fever as he is, it is still a pastime for him to go over its key stages one by one... Huckster, peddler of haberdashery, broker, sometimes perhaps even worse, secondhand clothes dealer, then tailor and spot remover in a somber little alley in Iași—he had tried them all after the accident that had cost him his job as a shop boy in a large wine tavern.

Two porters had lowered a cask into the cellar under the supervision of the boy Zibal.

A disagreement arose between them when dividing the earnings.

One of them grabbed a scrap of wood he found close at hand and struck his companion on the forehead, who fell to the ground dazed and covered in blood.

The boy, seeing the brutality, let out a cry of alarm, but the wretch rushed to leave the yard and, passing by the boy, raised his hand against him... Zibal collapsed, fainting from terror.

After being bedridden for several months, when he returned to his master, his job was taken.

Then began the hard struggle for life, which grew even harder with his marriage to Sura... But patience eventually wears down bad luck.

Sura's brother, the innkeeper at Podeni, died, and the inn went to Zibal, who carried on the business for himself.

Here he has been now for five years.

He has amassed a decent little fortune in cash and well-tended wines, goods that are always worth money.

Leiba escaped poverty, but they are all sick, he, his wife, and the child—marsh fever.

... And the people are mean and quarrelsome in Podeni!

... Insults... mockery... swearing... accusations of poisoning with vitriol... But the threats!

A threat weighs heavier on a soul that wavers easily than even the blow itself.

What torments Leiba now more than the shivering of the fever is a threat.

  18. – A!

    – Ah!

  19. goi ticălos!

    vile villain!

  20. gândește el oftând.

    he thinks with a sigh.

The villain is brother Gheorghe—wherever he may be!—a man with whom Zibal had a very unpleasant affair.

Gheorghe had come to the inn one autumn morning, exhausted from his journey; he was coming out of the hospital—so he said—and was looking for work.

  23. Hangiul l-a luat în slujbă.

The innkeeper took him into his service.

But Gheorghe proved to be far too brutal and morose a man... he swore constantly and muttered to himself around the yard.

  25. Erà o slugă rea, leneș și obraznic… și furà.

He was a bad servant, lazy and impudent... and he stole.

One day he threatened to kick the pregnant mistress, who had rightly scolded him, in the belly... another time he set a dog on little Strul.

  27. Leiba i-a făcut numaidecât socoteala și l-a trimis.

Leiba settled his account at once and dismissed him.

But Gheorghe refused to leave; he violently claimed that he had been hired for a whole year.

Then the innkeeper said he was going up the hill to the town hall to ask for guards to drive him away.

  30. Gheorghe a vârît repede mâna în sân strigând:

Gheorghe quickly thrust his hand into his coat, shouting:

  31. «Iudă!»

    "Judas!"

and tried to rush at his master.

Fortunately, a large wagon full of customers arrived just then.

  34. Gheorghe a început să rânjească, zicând:

    Gheorghe began to grin, saying:

  35. – Ce, te-ai spăriet, coane Leiba?

    – What, did you get scared, master Leiba?

  36. … Iacă mă duc.

    ... There, I'm leaving.

And drawing close menacingly over the counter toward Leiba, who stepped back as far as he could, he whispered to him:

    – Expect me on Easter night, so we can clink red eggs together, master... Know that I've settled your account, too!

  39. Atunci intrară mușteriii în dugheană.

Then the customers entered the shop.

    – May we meet in good health at the Resurrection, master Leiba!

  41. adăugă Gheorghe depărtându-se.

added Gheorghe as he walked away.

Leiba went to the town hall, then to the sub-prefecture, to denounce the man who threatened him, asking for protection.

The sub-prefect, a very cheerful young man, first accepted the bribe "modest" brought by Leiba, and then began to laugh at the fearful Jew and mock him.

  44. Leiba a stăruit călduros să-l facă a înțelege gravitatea lucrului, cum erà hanul izolat departe de sat și chiar de șoseà.

Leiba earnestly insisted to make him understand the gravity of the matter, how isolated the inn was, far from the village and even from the main road.

But the sub-prefect, adopting a more serious air, advised him to be wise: not to mention such a thing ever again, so as not to actually awaken, in a village where people are mean and poor, desires for robbery.

Later, a few days after, a deputy officer and two mounted guards came looking for brother Gheorghe: he was suspected in a case.

How good it would have been if Leiba had endured him just until those men arrived!

... But Gheorghe was now who knows where... Although this had happened long ago, nevertheless, in the mind of the fever-stricken man, the vivid impression of Gheorghe's face, his gesture of reaching into his coat, and his threatening words kept repeating.

How did that memory wake up so clearly?

  50. Erà sâmbăta Paștelui.

    It was Easter Saturday.

Up on the hill, in the village about two kilometers away through the marshes, the church bells could be heard... And it sounds so strange when you have a fever: now very loud, now hardly at all... The coming night was Easter night: the deadline of Gheorghe's promise...

  52. – Dar poate că l-au prins până acuma!

    – But maybe they've caught him by now!

... Either way, Zibal is only staying in Podeni until next autumn.

With his capital, a fine business can be opened in Iași... In town, Leiba will be healthy, he will live close to the police station... He will treat the commissioner, the deputy officer, the sergeant... Whoever pays well is well guarded.

In such a large town, at night there is noise and light, not darkness and silence like in the lonely valley of Podeni.

There is an inn in Iași—right there on the corner, what a great spot for a shop!—an inn where all night long the girls sing at the Café Chantant.

  57. Ce vieață sgomotoasă și veselă!

What a noisy and cheerful life!

There you can find, at any hour, day and night, the commissioner with the girls and other important gentlemen.

Why bother with so much headache here, where, especially since the railway came along—which bypasses the marshes by a long way—the business keeps dropping?...

  60. – Leibă!

    – Leiba!

  61. strigă Sura din năuntru, sosește dilijența, s’aud zurgălăii.

cries Sura from inside, the stagecoach is arriving, I hear the bells.

The valley of Podeni is a hollow enclosed on four sides by wooded hills.

In the southern part, which is lower, deep pools collect from the springs gushing from beneath the hills, over which thick patches of sedge rise like brushes.

Between the marshy side and the higher side toward the north, in the middle of the valley, stands Leiba's inn: it is an old stone building, sturdy as a small fortress; although the ground is marshy, the inn's walls and cellars are thoroughly dry.

At Sura's voice, Leiba gets up heavily from his chair, stretching his tired limbs; he looks far into the distance toward the east: no sign of any stagecoach.

    – It's not coming; you imagined it... he replies to his wife, and sits back down.

Exhausted, the man folds his arms on the table and rests his head upon them, which is burning hot.

Gheorghe… Noaptea Paștelui… Tâlhar… Ieșii… O crâșmă în miezul târgului… O dugheană veselă, care merge bine… Sănătatea… Și ațipì…

Under the warmth of the spring sun, which had begun to heat the surface of the marshes, a pleasant drowsiness enveloped the man's nerves, and his thoughts began to spin on the spindle of his feverish consciousness slower and slower, gradually softening the shapes and colors of his visions... Gheorghe... Easter Night... Robber... Iași... A tavern in the heart of the town... A cheerful shop that does good business... Health... And he dozed off...

... Sura and the child have been away from home for a long time.

Leiba goes to the door of the shop to look for her.

On the main street there is lively traffic, an uninterrupted swish of wheels on the road, accompanied by the rhythmic clatter of horseshoes trotting on the smooth asphalt.

Suddenly, however, the traffic stops, and coming from Copou a crowd of people can be seen, gesticulating and shouting in great agitation.

The crowd seems to be escorting someone: soldiers, a guard, and all kinds of onlookers.

At all the house windows, at all the shop doors, curious onlookers crowd together.

  75. – Aha!

    – Aha!

thinks Leiba, they've caught another robber!

  77. Cortejul se apropie.

    The procession approaches.

Sura detaches herself from the crowd and goes up next to Leiba on the tavern steps.

  79. – Ce e, Sură?

    – What is it, Sura?

  80. întreabă el.

    he asks.

  81. – E un nebun scăpat dela Golia.

    – It's a madman escaped from Golia.

    – Let's close the shop, lest he burst in on us...

  83. – E legat acuma bine; dar adineaori scăpase.

    – He's bound tightly now; but just earlier he had escaped.

He fought with all the soldiers... A Jew, whom a malicious goy in the crowd shoved against the madman, was bitten on the cheek by the madman.

Leiba can see well from the steps; one step lower, Sura watches with the child in her arms.

He is indeed a raving madman, held by two men on each side; his fists are tied tightly one over the other with a strong leather strap.

He is a man of massive build: a bull-like head, thick black hair, his beard and mustache rough and matted.

Through his shirt, torn from the fight, his broad chest is visible, covered like his head in a thick brush of hair.

He is barefoot; his mouth is full of blood, and he keeps spitting out the hairs he plucked with his teeth from the Jew's beard.

  90. Toată lumea s’a oprit… De ce?

    Everyone has stopped... Why?

  91. Jandarmii desleagă mâinile nebunului.

The gendarmes are untying the madman's hands.

The crowd steps aside, making a wide space around him.

The madman casts his eyes around and stops his burning gaze on Zibal's door; he grinds his teeth, rushes straight up the three steps, and in an instant, grabbing the child's head in his right palm and Sura's in his left, smashes them against each other with such force that he crushes them like soft eggs... A noise was heard, a crunching sound like nothing else, as the two craniums shattered against each other.

Leiba, his heart in a knot, like a man falling from an immeasurable height, tried to scream:

  95. – O lume întreagă mă lasă cu dinadinsul pradă unui nebun!

    – An entire world deliberately leaves me prey to a madman!

  96. Dar glasul mut nu se supuse voinții.

But his mute voice did not obey his will.

  97. – Scoală, jidane!

    – Get up, Jew!

someone shouts, cracking a switch loudly on the table.

  99. – Proastă glumă!

    – Foolish joke!

said Sura from the doorway of the tavern; to scare a man like that out of his sleep, you churlish peasant!

  101. Leiba sărì drept în picioare.

Leiba jumped straight to his feet.

  102. – Te-ai spăriet, jidane?

    – Did you get scared, Jew?

  103. întrebă râzând glumețul.

    asked the joker, laughing.

  104. Dormi la nămiez, ai?

    Sleeping at noon, huh?

  105. … Scoală, că-ți vin mușterii… sosește harabaoà poștii.

... Get up, your customers are coming... the mail wagon is arriving.

And, following his foolish habit, which annoyed the Jew greatly, he tried to grab Zibal in his arms to tickle him.

  107. – Lasă-mă ’n pace!

    – Leave me alone!

  108. strigă hangiul smucindu-se și îmbrâncindu-l cu toată puterea.

cried the innkeeper, jerking away and shoving him with all his strength.

  109. Nu vezi că sunt bolnav?

    Can't you see I'm sick?

  110. Lasă-mă ’n pace!

    Leave me alone!

The stagecoach finally arrives, almost three hours late.

There are two travelers, who sit down together with the driver, whom they invited, at the same table.

  113. Din convorbirea călătorilor se lămureà bine împrejurarea.

From the travelers' conversation, the circumstance became clear.

At the previous mail post, a robbery with murder had taken place overnight at a Jew's inn.

  115. Hangiul omorît țineà și schimbul cailor.

The murdered innkeeper also managed the horse relay.

The robbers had stolen them, and until others could be found in the village, the curious travelers were able to inspect the crime scene at leisure.

  117. Cinci victime.

    Five victims.

  118. Dar amănuntele!

    But the details!

If the house had not been found looted, one would have thought it was a cruel revenge, or the act of religious madness.

  120. In anecdotele despre sectarii iluminați, se povestesc câteodată executări de așà absurdă sălbăticie.

In anecdotes about enlightened sectarians, executions of such absurd savagery are sometimes recounted.

Leiba was shaking, racked by a severe fit of fever, and listened dazed.

Then followed something that boundly had to fill the driver with respect.

The young passengers were two students, one in philosophy, the other in medicine: they were going to spend the holidays in their hometown.

A lofty academic debate about crime and its causes flared up between them, and to be fair, the medical student was better prepared than the philosopher.

  125. Atavismul… Alcoolismul cu urmările-i patologice… Vițiul de concepție… Deformarea… Paludismul… Apoi nevroza! – Atâtea și atâtea cuceriri ale științei moderne… Dar cazul de reversie!

Atavism... Alcoholism with its pathological consequences... Defect of conception... Deformation... Malaria... Then neurosis! – So many triumphs of modern science... But the case of reversion!

  126. Darwin… Haeckel… Lombroso…

Darwin... Haeckel... Lombroso... At the case of reversion, the driver opens his eyes wide, in which shines a profound admiration for the triumphs of modern science.

  127. – Este evident, adaugă medicinistul.

    – It is evident, adds the medical student.

Therefore, the criminal proper, taken as a type, has excessively long arms and legs that are too short, a narrow and flattened forehead, and a heavily developed occiput; his face is of a characteristic harshness and bestiality, striking to accustomed eyes: he is a rudiment of a man; he is, as one might say, the beast that has only recently managed to stand solely on its hind paws and raise its head upward, toward the sky, toward the light!

At twenty years of age, after so much excitement, after a fine feast with a wine as well-born and well-bred as Zibal's wine, a phrase of lyrical nuance, even coming from a medical student, suits the occasion well.

The enthusiastic young man, between Darwin and Lombroso, had found time to catch a whiff of Schopenhauer too—

  131. «spre cer către lumină!»

"toward the sky, toward the light!"

Zibal was far from having understood "luminous" theory.

Perhaps for the first time in the damp air of Podeni, such lofty words, such noble subtleties of thought were being uttered.

What Leiba had understood better than anyone, better even than the lecturer, was the striking illustration of the theory; he knew the case of reversion in the flesh and bone: it was Gheorghe's portrait.

This portrait, of which until recently he preserved only the essential features, now re-awakened in his mind with perfect palpability down to the most insignificant details.

  136. Dilijența erà departe.

    The stagecoach was far away.

Leiba had followed it with his eyes until, turning to the left, it was lost behind the hill.

The sun too had set behind the western ridge, and evening was beginning to gently cobweb the shapes in the valley of Podeni.

The innkeeper, gloomy, began to ruminate in his mind over all he had heard.

... In the silence of the night, lost in the dark, a man, two women, and two tender children, suddenly torn from the arms of beneficent sleep by the hand of the beast with a human face and sacrificed one by one... The mad screams of the child cut short by the dagger stroke that splits his belly open... The throat crushed by an axe, through whose opening comes, after every gush of blood, a muted death rattle... And the last victim, stunned in a corner, witnessing all this while waiting for their turn... The process even more horrific than the execution, the defenseless Jew in the hands of the goyim... skulls far too weak for the fierce hands of the madman from earlier.

Leiba's lips, parched with fever, mechanically followed his thoughts, trembling rapidly.

A violent shudder seized him between his shoulder blades: he walked with faltering steps into the inn's gateway.

Without a doubt—thinks Sura—Leiba is not well at all, he is very sick; Leiba has "notions in his head" ... For what meaning can there be in all he has been doing for a few days, and especially what he did today?

He closed the tavern before lighting the candles, right when Sabbath was coming to an end.

Three times customers knocked on the shop door, shouting in familiar voices for him to open up.

At each knock, he shuddered and stopped her, whispering softly and with fearful eyes:

  147. – Nu te mișcà… Nu voiu să intre goi aici.

    – Don't move... I don't want goyim coming in here.

He then went under the gateway and started sharpening the wood-chopping axe on the stone step of the threshold.

He shivers so much he can barely stand on his feet, and he refuses to rest.

What is most worrying of all, he, Leiba, answered her persistent questions harshly and sent her to bed, ordering her to put out the light immediately.

At first, she resisted; but the man repeated his order so abruptly that, despite all her resentment, she had to comply, resigning herself to postponing the clarification of these circumstances until later.

Sura put out the lamp, went to bed, and is now sleeping next to Strul.

  153. Femeia aveà dreptate… Leiba e în adevăr bolnav.

The woman was right... Leiba is indeed sick.

  154. *

  155. E noapte deplină.

    It is full night.

Zibal has been sitting for a long time on the threshold leading to the gateway and listening... To what?

Vague noises come from afar... It sounds like the clatter of horses' hooves, muffled thuds of a mallet, mysterious and agitated conversations.

A heightened strain of attention sharpens the sense of hearing in the solitude of the night: when the eye is unarmed and helpless, hearing seems to fight to see as well.

But it's not an illusion... On the road that turns off the main road this way, approaching horse steps can be heard.

Zibal gets up and wants to draw near the large gate of the gateway.

The gate is securely closed with a heavy crossbeam, the ends of which rest in holes in the walls.

At the first step, the sand crushed under his slipper makes a far too indiscreet crunch.

Zibal steps out of his slippers and remains in his socks.

Thus, without any noise perceptible to an unwarned ear, he walks to the gateway gate just as the riders pass right in front of it at a walking pace.

They are speaking very softly, but not so much that Leiba fails to catch these few words quite clearly:

  166. – S’a sculat de vreme…

    – He got up early...

  167. – Dar dacă o fi plecat?

    – But what if he left?

    – His turn will come another time... But I would have liked to... Nothing more can be understood; those men have moved too far away.

  169. De cine erà vorba?

    Who were they talking about?

... Who could have gone to sleep or left?

  171. … Cui o să’i vie rândul altdată?

... Whose turn will come another time?

... Who is the one who would have wanted something else?

  173. … Și ce altceva vrea acela?

... And what else does that one want?

... And what were they doing on the side road—a road no one enters except specifically to stop at the inn?

... A crushing weariness settled on the nape of Zibal's neck...

  176. «Să fie Gheorghe?»

    "Could it be Gheorghe?"

Leiba felt his strength fading away and sat back down on the threshold.

Among the fragments of thoughts tumbling through his head, he could not grasp a single complete thought, a decision... Dazed, he went into the shop, struck a match, and lit a small kerosene lamp.

It is the mere idea of light; the wick is turned down so low that the flame stays hidden inside the brass burner; only through the burner's grill appear very thin vertical strips of almost dead light all around... But it is enough for him to see well into the familiar corners of the shop... Ah!

the difference between the sun and the most insignificant spark is far smaller than between that spark and blind darkness!

  181. Ceasornicul țăcănià în perete.

The clock ticked on the wall.

  182. Sgomotul acesta monoton supărà pe Zibal.

    This monotonous noise annoyed Zibal.

Our man put his hand on the swinging pendulum and stopped its movement.

  184. Gura lui erà uscată.

    His mouth was dry.

  185. Ii erà sete.

    He was thirsty.

He washed a small glass in the three-legged tub next to the counter and tried to pour himself good brandy from a flask; but the neck of the flask began to chatter loudly against the rim of the glass.

  187. Aceste sunete erau și mai supărătoare.

These sounds were even more disturbing.

A second attempt, despite all his effort to overcome his weakness, had no better success.

Then, he gave up on the glass, letting it sink gently into the water, and took a few swallows straight from the flask.

After this, he set the flask back down, which touching the wooden board produced a frightening click.

For a moment, he froze, overwhelmed by this sensation.

Then he took the lamp and placed it on the windowsill facing the gateway: upon the gate, the cobblestones, and the opposite wall of the gateway, broad bands of light were traced, barely thicker than a shadow.

Zibal sat down again on the threshold, straining his ears in watchfulness... Church bells on the hill... Wood-plank sounding for the resurrection... That means midnight has passed; we are drawing near daybreak... Ah!

if only the rest of this long night would pass like the first half!

  195. … O trosnitură de nisip strivit sub talpă!

... A crunch of sand crushed under a sole!

  196. … A doua trosnitură… Mai multe… E de sigur cineva afară, acì, foarte aproape.

... But he is in his socks and hasn't even moved his foot... A second crunch... Several more... Someone is definitely outside, right here, very close.

Leiba gets up pressing his hand to his chest and trying to push back down a stubborn lump rising in his throat.

  198. … Sunt mai mulți oameni afară… Și Gheorghe!

... There are several men outside... And Gheorghe!

  199. … Da, el e; da, a bătut în deal ceasul Invierii.

... Yes, it's him; yes, the hour of Resurrection struck on the hill.

  200. Vorbesc încet:

    They speak quietly:

  201. – Dacă-ți spun eu că doarme.

    – I'm telling you he's asleep.

  202. Am văzut când a stins lumina.

I saw when he put out the light.

  203. – Mai bine; prindem cuibul întreg.

    – All the better; we'll catch the whole nest.

  204. – Poarta o deschiz eu: îi știu meșteșugul.

    – I'll open the gate: I know the trick.

  205. Să’i croim ferestruica…

Let's cut a little window into it... The crossbeam passes right here... And the touchings of the man outside could be felt as he measured the distance on the wood... A large auger is heard gnawing through the dry fibers of the old oak plank... Zibal needs to lean on something: he rests his left palm against the gate and covers his eyes with his right hand.

Then, through an inexplicable whim of internal tricks, there sounded in the man's ear from inside very loud and clear:

  207. «Leiba! sosește dilijența!»

    "Leiba! the stagecoach is arriving!"

It was undoubtedly Sura's voice... A warm ray of hope... a moment of happiness... it is a dream again!

... But Leiba quickly pulls back his left hand: the tip of the tool, penetrating this side, pricked him in the palm.

  210. A mai gândì la scăpare?

    To think of escape anymore?

  211. … Absurd!

    ... Absurd!

  212. … In creierul care ardeà, imaginea sfredelului luà niște dimensii nemaiînchipuite.

... In his burning brain, the image of the auger took on unimaginable dimensions.

The tool, turning continuously, grew infinitely, and the hole became larger and larger, so large at last that within its round frame, the monster could appear standing up without even bending.

What was happening in that brain was beyond the realm of human thought: life had risen to a stage of exaltation from which everything was seen, heard, and touched as enormous, of chaotic proportions.

... The work outside continues methodically and persistently.

Leiba has now seen four times in a row the twisted steel tooth penetrating his side and pulling back out.

  217. – Amù, adù herăstrăul… zise Gheorghe.

    – Now, bring the saw... said Gheorghe.

A narrow blade of a saw passes through the first hole and begins to gnaw in quick, regular movements... The plan was easy to understand: four holes at four corners of a square; between them the saw draws the lines; in the center of the square the auger was driven in beforehand; when the piece is completely detached from the main body of the wood, it is pulled out; through the remaining opening, a strong hand reaches in, grabs the beam, pushes it aside, and... the goyim are in Leiba's house.

And that same auger, in a few minutes, will be the instrument of torture for Zibal and all his family... Two executioners will hold the victim pinned down, and Gheorghe, with his heel on his belly, will slowly drive the auger, as if into a dead wooden plank, into the living bone of his chest, deep, deeper, until it touches his heart, to stop it from its mad throbbing and nail it in place.

A deadly sweat drenched Zibal's whole body; the man collapsed at the joints and slowly sank to his knees, like a beast bowing its neck under the final blow, aware that from now on it must abandon itself.

  221. «Da! s’o țintuească pe loc!… gândì el pierdut… da! s’o țintuească pe loc!»

"Yes! nail it in place!... he thought absently... yes! nail it in place!"

And he remained for a time with eyes staring fixedly at the light from the window... For a few moments he stood thus frozen, as if in another world, but suddenly:

"Yes! he repeated, smiling with a ferocious wink; yes! nail it in place!"

A strange phenomenon took place then within this being, a complete reversal: his trembling stopped, his despondency vanished, and his face, distorted by such a prolonged crisis, assumed a bizarre serenity.

He stood up straight, with the confidence of a healthy, strong man walking toward an easily reachable goal.

A line between the top two points of the square was coming to an end.

Leiba stepped closer, curious to watch the tool at work.

His smile grew even more defined now.

  229. Mișcă din cap, ca și cum ar fi zis:

He shook his head as if he were saying:

  230. – Mai am încă vreme.

    – I still have time.

The saw gnawed the last fibers near the hole toward which it had aimed, and began working between the lower holes.

"Three more to go", thought Leiba, and with the caution of the most seasoned hunter, quietly stepped into the shop.

He searched under the counter, took something, and stepped back out with the same tact, hiding the object he held in his hand as if he feared the indiscretion of the walls, and walked on tiptoe to the gate.

  234. Dar ceva grozav!

    But something terrible happened!

the work outside stopped completely... nothing more could be felt.

  236. «Ce-i asta?… Să fi plecat?… S’a dus?»

"What is this?... Could he have left?... Is he gone?"

  237. fulgeră prin mintea omului din năuntru.

flashed through the mind of the man inside.

And at this thought, he bit his lower lip, seized by an unheard-of desolation...

  239. «Haha!»

    "Haha!"

it had been a ugly deception: the work begins again, and he starts following it with the heartbeats of the keenest interest.

Decidedly, our man was tormented by an inexplicable desire to see the job finished as soon as possible.

    "Faster! thought Leiba impatiently... faster!"

  243. Acum se auzeau iar clopotele în deal.

Now the bells could be heard again on the hill.

  244. – Mai iute, bre, ne-apucă ziua!

    – Faster, man, daybreak will catch us!

said a voice from outside, as if driven by the will of the man inside.

  246. Lucrătorul pornì cu multă activitate.

The worker started with great activity.

Just a few more movements, and all the points of the square are connected.

  248. In sfârșit!

    At last!

The auger slowly pulls out the four-cornered piece... A large, burly hand reaches in... But before it can touch the beam it is searching for, two roars are heard, while Zibal forcefully winds the free end of the noose around the fixed post near the cellar entrance... The noose was cleverly contrived: a long rope tied by one end to a wooden post; at a suitable length, over the spot where the carved square was to disappear, a loop, which Leiba kept held open with his left hand, while holding the other end tightly with his right hand.

At the precise moment required, Zibal released the loop and, quickly seizing the free end with both hands, pulled the entire arm inside with a supreme yank.

... In an instant the operation was complete... Two roars had accompanied it, one of ruin, the other of triumph: the hand was "nailed in place".

  252. Șe auziră apoi pași depărtându-se grabnic.

Then footsteps were heard hurrying away.

Gheorghe's companions were leaving to Zibal the prey caught with such cleverness.

The Jew rushed into the shop, took the lamp, and with a confident turn turned the wick all the way up: the light trapped between the grills burst out above, merry and victorious, restoring clear life to the shadowy shapes around it.

  255. Zibal trecù cu lampa în gang.

Zibal went into the gateway with the lamp.

The robber groaned heavily; from the strain in his arm, it was clear he had given up on useless struggling.

  257. Mâna erà umflată și degetele încovoiate… păreà că vrea s’apuce.

The hand was swollen and the fingers bent... as if trying to grasp something.

The Jew brought the lamp close to it. – A shiver: the fever was returning again. – He leaned the light too close, so that, trembling, he touched the robber's hand with the hot glass chimney: a violent twitching of the fingers occurred, followed by a muted wail... At the sight of this phenomenon, Zibal started... an eccentric inspiration flashed through his eyes.

He began to laugh with a roar that shook the vault of the gateway and quickly went into the shop.

  260. Mijià de ziuă.

    Day was dawning.

Sura woke up suddenly... as if she had heard terrible roars through her sleep... Leiba was not in the room.

Everything from the previous day rushed back to her mind.

  263. Se petreceà ceva rău.

    Something terrible was happening.

  264. Sărì jos din pat și făcù lumină.

She jumped out of bed and lit a light.

  265. Patul lui Leiba erà nedesfăcut.

    Leiba's bed was unmade.

  266. El nu se culcase de loc.

He had not gone to bed at all.

  267. Unde erà?

    Where was he?

... The woman cast her eyes out the window: on the hill opposite, a flock of small, lively lights wandered, moving, leaping, now hiding, now appearing again... People were coming out of the Resurrection service.

  269. Sura deschise o leacă fereastra; atunci auzì gemete înfundate la poartă.

Sura opened the window a crack; then she heard muffled groans at the gate.

  270. Infiorată, coborî iute pe scăricică.

Shuddering, she quickly went down the small stairs.

  271. Gangul erà luminat.

    The gateway was lit.

Stepping out onto the threshold, the woman was struck by a terrible sight.

On a wooden stool, with his elbows on his knees and his beard resting in his hands, sat Zibal.

Like a scientist who, in mixing certain elements, seeks to catch a subtle secret of nature that has long eluded and vexed him, Zibal kept his eyes fixed upon a hanging, black, shapeless thing, beneath which, on another chair at a suitable height, burned a large torch.

Zibal watches without blinking the process of decomposition of the hand that surely would not have spared him. – He had not heard the wretched man's howls from outside: what he was seeing was now too interesting for him to hear as well.

Zibal had watched insatiably all the contortions, all the strange twitchings of the fingers, then the numbness slowly overcoming them one by one – they were like the legs of a beetle, curling and stretching, flailing in bizarre movements, hard, slower, very slow, and then going stiff under the play of a cruel child.

  277. Erà sfârșit.

    It was over.

The hand was roasting and slowly swelling without movement.

  279. Sura dete un țipet.

    Sura let out a scream.

  280. – Leiba!

    – Leiba!

Zibal motioned for her not to disturb him... A heavy smell of burned flesh spread through the gateway; a sizzling sound was heard and small crackles.

  282. – Leiba!

    – Leiba!

  283. ce e?

    what is it?

  284. repetă femeia.

    repeated the woman.

  285. Se făceà ziuă bine… Sura se aruncă și trase bârna.

Daylight was coming on strong... Sura rushed forward and pulled the beam.

The gate swung open against the wall, dragging Gheorghe's body suspended by his right arm.

A crowd of villagers, all carrying their lit Easter candles, rushed inside.

  288. – Ce e?

    “What is it?”

  289. ce e?

    what is it?

  290. Indată înțeleseră ce fusese.

They understood at once what had happened.

Zibal, who had sat motionless until now, stood up solemnly.

He made his way through, calmly pushing the people aside.

  293. – Cum a fost pricina, jidane?

    – How did this happen, Jew?

  294. întrebă unul.

    asked one of them.

    – Leiba Zibal, said the innkeeper in a loud voice and with a broad gesture, is going to Jassy to tell the rabbi that Leiba Zibal is no Jew... Leiba Zibal is a goy... because Leiba Zibal has lit a torch for Christ!

And the man set off slowly uphill toward the east, like a sensible traveler who knows that one does not start on a long journey with a hasty step.
