Jack u l-Feġġ tal-Ġgant
Jack and the Beanstalk
-
Darba kien hemm armla fqira li kellha iben wieħed jismu Jack.
Once upon a time there was a poor widow who had an only son named Jack.
-
Kienu tant foqra li darba kellhom ibiegħu l-baqra tagħhom.
They were so poor that one day they had to sell their cow.
-
Omm Jack bagħtu s-suq biex ibiegħha.
Jack's mother sent him to the market to sell it.
-
Fit-triq, Jack iltaqa' ma' raġel qadim li tah ħames fażola maġiċi bi skambju mal-baqra.
On the way, Jack met an old man who gave him five magic beans in exchange for the cow.
-
Meta Jack reġa' lura d-dar bil-fażola minflok bil-flus, ommu kienet irrabjata ħafna.
When Jack returned home with beans instead of money, his mother was very angry.
-
Hi rmiethom mill-ħieqa u bagħtet lil Jack jorqod bla ċena.
She threw them out the window and sent Jack to bed without dinner.
-
Filgħodu, Jack ħares barra u ra li l-fażola kibret u saret feġġ enormi.
In the morning, Jack looked outside and saw that the beans had grown and become a huge beanstalk.
-
Dan intefa' 'l fuq u 'l fuq, fil-bogħod fis-sema.
It reached up and up, far into the sky.
-
Jack tela' fuq il-feġġ sal-quċċata, fejn sab kastell kbir.
Jack climbed up the beanstalk to the top, where he found a large castle.
-
Martu tal-ġgant kienet tgħix hemm.
The giant's wife lived there.
-
Jack talab xi ħaġa x'jiekol, u hija tathielu bil-qalb ħobż u ħalib.
Jack asked for something to eat, and she kindly gave him bread and milk.
-
Iżda dalwaqt il-ġgant wasal d-dar, jgħajjat:
But soon the giant arrived home, shouting:
-
"Fee-fi-fo-fum! Inħoss riħa ta' bniedem!"
"Fee-fi-fo-fum! I smell the scent of a human!"
-
Il-mara ħbiet lil Jack fil-forn.
The woman hid Jack in the oven.
-
Wara l-ikla tiegħu, il-ġgant għadd il-muniti tad-deheb tiegħu u mbagħad raqad.
After his meal, the giant counted his gold coins and then went to sleep.
-
Jack ħareġ bil-mod, ħa borża deheb, u niżel il-feġġ lejn ommu.
Jack quietly came out, took a bag of gold, and went down the beanstalk to his mother.
-
Id-deheb ma damx, għalhekk Jack tela' l-feġġ mill-ġdid.
The gold did not last long, so Jack climbed the beanstalk again.
-
Din id-darba seraq tiġieġa li tagħmel bajd tad-deheb.
This time he stole a hen that lays golden eggs.
-
Il-ġgant qam u gergir, iżda Jack kien diġà jinżel bit-tiġieġa maġika.
The giant woke up and grumbled, but Jack was already climbing down with the magic hen.
-
Darba terza tela' Jack.
A third time Jack went up.
-
Ħeba ruħu fil-kastell u stenna.
He hid himself in the castle and waited.
-
Din id-darba seraq arpa maġika li kienet tkanta waħedha.
This time he stole a magic harp that sang by itself.
-
Iżda l-arpa għajtet:
But the harp cried out:
-
"Sidi! Sidi!"
"Master! Master!"
-
u l-ġgant qam u talab wara Jack sal-feġġ.
and the giant woke up and chased after Jack to the beanstalk.
-
Jack niżel kemm felaħ u għajjat:
Jack climbed down as fast as he could and shouted:
-
"Omm, ejja bl-mannara!"
"Mother, come with the axe!"
-
Malli wasal fl-art, aqta' l-feġġ bil-qawwa kollha li kellu.
As soon as he reached the ground, he chopped down the beanstalk with all the strength he had.
-
Il-feġġ il-kbir waqa' bil-ħoss u l-ġgant waqa' miegħu u qatt ma deher aktar.
The great beanstalk fell with a crash, and the giant fell with it and was never seen again.
-
Jack u ommu kienu issa sinjuri, bil-borża tad-deheb, bit-tiġieġa li tagħmel bajd tad-deheb, u bl-arpa li tkanta.
Jack and his mother were now rich, with the bag of gold, the hen that lays golden eggs, and the singing harp.
-
U għexu ferħanin għal dejjem.
And they lived happily ever after.
