The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Pada suatu masa dahulu, hiduplah empat ekor arnab kecil, dan nama mereka ialah Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, dan Peter.

Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter.

Mereka tinggal bersama ibu mereka di sebuah tebing berpasir, di bawah akar sebatang pokok pain yang sangat besar.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

Pada suatu pagi, ibu mereka berkata,

One morning old Mrs. Rabbit said,

"Anak-anak ibu, kamu boleh pergi ke padang atau turun ke lorong, tetapi jangan sekali-kali masuk ke kebun Tuan McGregor. Ayah kamu pernah mendapat kecelakaan di sana; dia telah dimasukkan ke dalam pai oleh Puan McGregor."

"Now my dears, you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden. Your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor."

Kemudian dia mengambil bakul dan keluar melalui hutan menuju ke kedai roti.

Then old Mrs. Rabbit took a basket and went through the wood to the baker's.

Flopsy, Mopsy, dan Cotton-tail, yang merupakan arnab-arnab kecil yang baik, pergi turun ke lorong untuk memetik buah-buahan.

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries.

Tetapi Peter, yang sangat nakal, terus berlari ke kebun Tuan McGregor dan menyelit masuk di bawah pagar.

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden, and squeezed under the gate!

First he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;

Dia mula rasa agak mual, jadi dia pergi mencari saderi.

And then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for some parsley.

Tetapi di hujung rangka timun, siapa sangka dia bertemu dengan Tuan McGregor!

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

Tuan McGregor melompat bangun dan berlari mengejar Peter sambil mengibas-ngibas penyapu dan menjerit,

Mr. McGregor jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out,

"Berhenti, pencuri!"

"Stop, thief!"

Peter sangat ketakutan.

Peter was most dreadfully frightened.

Dia berlari ke sana ke sini di dalam kebun itu, kerana dia telah lupa jalan balik ke pagar.

He rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate.

Dia kehilangan satu sepatunya di antara kobis-kobis, dan sepatunya yang satu lagi di antara ubi kentang.

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe among the potatoes.

Peter terus berlari, dan akhirnya dia tersangkut dalam jaring pokok gooseberry disebabkan butang-butang besar pada jaketnya.

Peter ran on, and finally he got caught in a gooseberry net by the large buttons on his jacket.

Dia menyangka dirinya sudah tamat dan mengalirkan air mata yang besar-besar.

He gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears.

Tetapi beberapa ekor pipit yang peramah mendengarnya, dan mereka menggalakkannya untuk mencuba sekali lagi.

But his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who encouraged him to exert himself.

Peter pun menggeliat keluar dari jaket itu tepat pada masanya dan berlari pergi.

Peter wriggled out of his jacket just in time and ran away.

Dia menjumpai sebuah pintu pada dinding, tetapi pintu itu berkunci.

He found a door in a wall, but it was locked.

Akhirnya dia sampai ke pagar, menyelit di bawahnya, dan berlari pulang ke rumah.

Finally he reached the gate, slipped underneath it, and ran home.

Dia sangat penat sehingga dia terjatuh di lantai lubang arnab itu dan memejamkan matanya.

He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand on the floor of the rabbit-hole and shut his eyes.

Ibunya sedang sibuk memasak.

His mother was busy cooking.

Dia tertanya-tanya apa yang telah berlaku dengan pakaian Peter.

She wondered what he had done with his clothes.

Ini sudah kali kedua jaket dan sepatu Peter hilang dalam masa dua minggu!

This was the second jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortnight!

Peter tidak berapa sihat pada malam itu, jadi ibunya membaringkannya dan memberikannya teh bunga chamomile.

Peter was not very well during the evening, so his mother put him to bed and gave him some chamomile tea.

Tetapi Flopsy, Mopsy, dan Cotton-tail mendapat roti, susu, dan buah-buahan untuk makan malam mereka.

But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper.
