Kintarō
-
Long ago, there was a strong child named Kintarō.
-
Born deep in the mountains of Mount Ashigara in Sagami Province, he lived together with his mother, the mountain crone.
-
Kintarō was exceedingly strong from the moment he was born, and by the time he was already seven or eight years old, he would lift objects like stone mortars or rice-bran bales with utter composure.
-
Even when engaging in sumo wrestling against most adults, he would not lose.
-
When there were no longer any opponents left in the neighborhood, Kintarō grew bored and ran around inside the forest all day long.
-
And so, walking while shouldering a large broadaxe given to him by his mother, he would indiscriminately fell large cedar and pine trees, amusing himself by mimicking a woodcutter.
-
One day, as he entered deep, far into the depths of the forest and was cutting a large tree as usual, a large bear sluggishly emerged.
-
The bear, while making its eyes gleam,
-
“Who is it that ravages my forest?”
-
so saying, leaped at him.
-
Thereupon, Kintarō,
-
“What, for a mere bear! Do you not know Kintarō?”
-
while saying, flung away the broadaxe and suddenly grappled with the bear.
-
And applying a leg trip, he threw it heavily onto the ground.
-
The bear was utterly defeated, and placing both paws on the ground to apologize, became Kintarō's retainer.
-
Seeing that the bear, who acted as the chief in the forest, had been defeated and become Kintarō's retainer, rabbits, monkeys, deer, and the like followed after in a long queue, and
-
“Master Kintarō, please make me a retainer as well.”
-
..., so he/she said.
-
Kintarō,
-
“Very well, very well.”
-
so nodding, made them all his retainers.
-
From then on, Kintarō had his mother prepare many rice balls for him every morning, and departed into the forest.
-
When Kintarō blew a whistle and
-
“Come now, everyone come. Everyone come.”
-
so called, with the bear at the head, the deer, monkeys, and rabbits came slouching out.
-
Taking these retainers along as his attendants, Kintarō walked around inside the mountains all day long.
-
One day, having walked hither and thither, when they presently came to a place where soft grass was growing, everyone stretched out their legs and lay rolling about there.
-
The sun was shining in an apparently pleasant manner.
-
Kintarō,
-
“Come, everyone wrestle sumo. As a reward, I shall give you these rice balls.”
-
so saying, the bear dug the earth with its shaggy paws and prepared a sumo ring.
-
First, the monkey and the rabbit matched up, and the deer became the referee.
-
When the rabbit caught hold of the monkey's tail and attempted to carry him out of the sumo ring, the monkey, vexed, recklessly grabbed and pulled the rabbit's long ears, and therefore the rabbit, feeling pain, released his hands.
-
thereby the match could not be decided, and neither could receive the reward.
-
This time the rabbit became the referee, and the deer and the bear matched up, but the deer was immediately overturned by the bear, antlers and all.
-
Kintarō,
-
“Amusing, amusing!”
-
so saying, he clapped his hands.
-
At long last, at the very end, Kintarō stood straight in the center of the sumo ring, and
-
“Come now, everyone come at me.”
-
while saying, spread wide his large arms.
-
Thereupon the rabbit, the monkey, the deer, and at the very end the bear went to attack him, but one after another, they were completely rolled over.
-
“What is this? You are cowards. Everyone come at me all at once.”
-
so Kintarō said, and vexed, what with the rabbit grabbing his leg and the monkey placing hands around his neck, it became a great commotion.
-
And with the deer pushing his waist and the bear grappling with his chest, everyone in an all-out effort groaned and groaned, attempting to throw Kintarō down, but by no means could they throw him down.
-
Kintarō at last grew impatient, and when he gave his body a mighty shake, the rabbit, the monkey, the deer, and the bear all at once went rolling and tumbling out of the sumo ring.
-
“Ah, it hurts! Ah, it hurts!”
-
so everyone said with one voice, rubbing their waists or massaging their shoulders.
-
Kintarō,
-
“Come, since it is a pity that you lost to me, I shall divide them among everyone.”
-
so saying, he made the rabbit, the monkey, the deer, and the bear line up all around in a circle, and seating himself in the center, divided the rice balls, and everyone ate together.
-
After a short while, Kintarō,
-
"Ah, that was good. Well now, let us go home."
-
So saying, he led them all back again.
-
Even along the way home, they played at racing through the forest and at tag upon the rocks, and as they went thus playing, they came to the edge of a great mountain stream.
-
The water roared with a mighty noise and rushed along with tremendous force, but unfortunately no bridge was laid across it.
-
The others said,
-
"What shall we do? Shall we turn back?"
-
..., so he/she said.
-
Kintarō alone, with an unconcerned look, said:
-
"Oh, it is nothing."
-
And as he spoke, he looked about him, and there stood on the riverbank a great cedar tree, so large that it would take two men to span it.
-
Kintarō flung down his axe and suddenly laid both hands upon the cedar tree.
-
And after he had given it two or three mighty heaves, there came a great cracking and crashing sound, and the tree fell heavily across the stream, making a fine bridge.
-
Kintarō again hoisted his axe upon his shoulder and led the way across.
-
The others looked at one another and each whispered,
-
"What prodigious strength!"
-
And whispering thus among themselves, they followed after him.
-
At that time, a single woodcutter was hidden upon a rock on the opposite bank and had been watching this scene.
-
Seeing Kintarō fell the great tree so nonchalantly, he opened his eyes wide and muttered to himself:
-
"What a strange child, indeed! Whose child can he be?"
-
So he murmured to himself.
-
Then he rose and softly followed after Kintarō.
-
When he had parted from the rabbits and the bear, Kintarō went on alone, lightly skipping across valleys and climbing along cliffs, until he entered a solitary house deep, deep in the mountains.
-
About that place, white clouds were welling up.
-
The woodcutter, coming after him, at last made his way by clambering over tree roots and clutching at rocky crags, and so followed him.
-
When at last he reached the front of the house and the woodcutter peered inside, there sat Kintarō before the hearth, eagerly telling his mother, the mountain hag, the tale of his wrestling with the bear and the deer.
-
His mother, too, listened with apparent amusement, smiling all the while.
-
At that moment, the woodcutter suddenly thrust his head out from the window and said:
-
"Now, now, my boy. This time, let us have a wrestling match with your uncle."
-
So saying, he sauntered in.
-
And abruptly he thrust a hairy hand before Kintarō.
-
The mountain hag said, "Oh?"
-
And made a puzzled face; but Kintarō, finding it amusing, said:
-
"Ah, let us wrestle!"
-
And at once put out his plump and charming hand.
-
Thereupon the two pushed against each other for a while, their faces quite red.
-
After a time, the woodcutter suddenly said:
-
"Let us stop now. The bout cannot be decided."
-
So saying, he withdrew his hand.
-
Then he reseated himself, made a polite bow toward the mountain hag, and said:
-
"I do beg your pardon for my sudden intrusion. The truth is, I saw the young master fell a great cedar tree by the mountain stream a while ago, and was so astonished that I followed him all the way here. And now, having wrestled arm to arm with him, I am amazed all the more at his vast strength. Indeed, this child will surely grow into a mighty warrior one day."
-
Saying thus, he then turned to Kintarō and asked:
-
"How would it be, my boy—will you not go up to the capital and become a samurai?"
-
..., so he/she said.
-
Kintarō, opening his eyes wide, said:
-
"Ah, how I should like to become a samurai!"
-
..., so he/she said.
-
This woodcutter, as it turned out, was in truth one Usui Sadamitsu, a retainer of the famous Minamoto no Yorimitsu, who was renowned at that time as the greatest general in all Japan.
-
And he had received a command from his lord to seek out strong samurai, and so had been travelling about in this guise throughout the length and breadth of Japan.
-
When the mountain hag heard this, she rejoiced greatly and said:
-
"In truth, this child's late father was also a samurai who bore the noble surname of Sakata. For certain reasons we are buried here in the mountains as you see, but if only a good opportunity arose, I have ever wished to send him forth to the capital, make him a samurai, and let him carry on the family name. If that be the case, though he is a wild rogue as you see him, I pray you, take him under your care."
-
So she spoke, looking most pleased as well.
-
Kintarō, listening to the talk of the two beside him, said:
-
"How happy I am, how happy! I am to become a samurai!"
-
So saying, he danced a little jig.
-
When the bear, the deer, the monkey, and the rabbit all heard that Kintarō was at last to be taken by Usui Sadamitsu up to the capital, they came together in a group to bid him farewell.
-
Kintarō patted each of their heads in turn and said:
-
"Do all of you play together in friendship."
-
..., so he/she said.
-
The others said,
-
"How lonely it will be without you, Kintarō! Do become a great general quickly, and show us your face again."
-
So saying, they went back, looking loath to part.
-
Kintarō bowed low before his mother and said:
-
"Mother, then I shall go and return."
-
..., so he/she said.
-
And he followed after Sadamitsu, setting out with a proud air.
-
Thereafter, taking many days and many days, Sadamitsu brought Kintarō back to the capital.
-
And he went to Yorimitsu's mansion and said:
-
"In the depths of Mount Ashigara, I found such a child as this."
-
And so he presented Kintarō to Yorimitsu.
-
"Ho, this is a rare one—a child who looks strong indeed."
-
Said Yorimitsu, as he rubbed Kintarō's head.
-
"But the name Kintarō is odd for a samurai. If your father's name was Sakata, then from now on you shall call yourself Sakata Kintoki."
-
Thereupon Kintarō took the name Sakata Kintoki and became a retainer of Yorimitsu.
-
And when he grew up, he became a great samurai, and together with Watanabe no Tsuna, Urabe no Suetake, and Usui Sadamitsu, came to be called one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Yorimitsu.
