The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
-
Once upon a time, though exactly when is no longer known, there lived an old bamboo cutter.
-
His true name was Sanuki no Miyatsuko Maro, but as he entered the bamboo groves of the fields and mountains almost every day, cut down bamboo, fashioned various objects, and made his living selling them, he was commonly known by the name of the Bamboo-Cutter Old Man.
-
One day, as he went into the bamboo grove as usual, he noticed a single bamboo stalk glowing strangely.
-
Thinking it wondrous, he approached and gently cut it open, only to find a beautiful little girl, barely three inches tall, sitting inside the hollow stalk.
-
Since she was found inside the bamboo of the grove he knew so well, he reasoned that heaven must have granted her to him as his own child. Placing her upon the palm of his hand, he carried her home, handed her to his old wife, and instructed her to raise the child with great care.
-
The old woman, too, rejoiced at how exceedingly beautiful the child was, placed her in a basket, and raised her with the utmost devotion.
-
Even after this event occurred, the old man still gathered bamboo and passed day after day, but strangely enough, as he cut many bamboos, he frequently found bamboos with gold contained between node and node.
-
As a result, the old man's household gradually grew wealthy.
-
Now, the child who had come out from inside the bamboo appeared to have been raised well, rapidly growing larger, and within about three months became a full-grown person.
-
Thereupon he gave her hair ornaments and garments suitable for a maiden, but as she was a precious child, he kept her inside the depths of the house without letting her go outside in the least, and nurtured her with ever more devotion.
-
As she grew, the maiden's features became increasingly beautiful, so much so that she seemed hardly to belong to this world, and the inside of the house shone brilliantly from corner to corner.
-
For the old man, just looking at this child was the best medicine and his greatest comfort.
-
Meanwhile, he continued to gather bamboo and obtain gold as before, eventually amassing a vast fortune. He built a grand estate, employed many servants, and came to be highly respected by society.
-
Now, they had completely forgotten to give the girl a name until then, but realizing it would be strange for her to remain nameless now that she was grown, they requested a fine godfather to bestow a name upon her.
-
The name given to her was Nayatake no Kaguya-hime, the Radiant Princess of the Supple Bamboo.
-
Following the custom of the time, they held a grand banquet for three days, inviting neighbors and many other men and women to celebrate.
-
As rumors of this beautiful girl's reputation spread, the men of the world wished to take her as a wife, or at least catch a glimpse of her. They approached the house and tried to peer through the gaps, but they could not manage to see her form by any means.
-
Even when they sought at least to meet the people of the household and speak a word, they were not even given a hearing, so that the suitors grew ever more anxious and raised a commotion.
-
Among them, there were five particularly earnest suitors who refused to leave the vicinity of the house day or night, desperate to somehow meet Kaguya-hime and show her their devotion.
-
All of them were noblemen of high rank and status: Prince Ishizukuri, Prince Kuramochi, the Minister of the Right Abe no Miushi, the Grand Counselor Otomo no Miyuki, and the Middle Counselor Isonokami no Maro.
-
These men each devised means in their own way to obtain the princess, but not one of them succeeded.
-
The old man, thinking matters had gone too far, spoke to the princess one day, saying:
-
"Though I know you are no ordinary person, I ask you to look upon me, who has nurtured and raised you until today, as your parent, and listen to what I have to say."
-
He prefaced his words in this manner, and continued:
-
I have already crossed the threshold of seventy years, and I know not when my life may come to an end. I wish to find a good husband for you while I still can, so that I may leave this world with no regrets. Since there are so many gentlemen who are completely devoted to you, why not choose one from among them who suits your heart?" When he said this, the princess looked surprised and hesitated to answer, but finally steeling her resolve, she said, "I cannot accept anyone as my husband unless he demonstrates a devotion as deep as my wishes demand. It is not such a difficult matter. I shall ask these five gentlemen to find the objects I desire, and I will pledge myself to the one who brings his item back without fail."
-
so she spoke.
-
Relieved to some extent, the old man went to where the five suitors were gathered and informed them of her decision. Since none of them could possibly object, they readily agreed at once.
-
However, the princess's demands were exceedingly difficult tasks.
-
They were different for all five men: for Prince Ishizukuri, the stone bowl of the Buddha in India; for Prince Kuramochi, a branch of a tree on Mount Hōrai in the Eastern Sea having silver roots, a golden stem, and white jewel fruits; for the Minister of the Right Abe, the robe of the fire-rat in China; for the Major Counselor Ōtomo, the five-colored jewel attached to the dragon's neck; and for the Middle Counselor Isonokami, one cowrie shell held by a swallow.
-
At this, the old man said,
-
That is quite a difficult task. You must not say such things." However, the princess said, "It is not such a difficult matter," she insisted, remaining completely unperturbed. Having no other choice, the old man conveyed the princess's requests as instructed, leaving the suitors utterly astounded as they returned to their homes.
-
Even so, the five men, having resolved to somehow make Kaguya-hime their wife, each devised various schemes and attempted to find the requested items.
-
First, Prince Ishizukuri, who possessed a talent for cunning, made it appear as though he had gone to India to retrieve the Buddha's stone begging-bowl; instead, after about three years had passed, he took a pitch-black, soot-covered stone bowl from in front of the Binzuru statue at a mountain temple in Yamato Province, placed it pompously in a brocade bag, and presented it to the princess.
-
However, the bowl, which was supposed to emanate a magnificent light, did not give off even as much light as a firefly, so it was instantly rejected as a fraud.
-
Secondly, Prince Kuramochi, though he did set sail after spreading the rumor that he was going to fetch the jeweled branch of Hōrai, in truth returned stealthily on the third day and, just as he had previously planned, summoned many skilled jewel-craftsmen, secretly had them make a jeweled branch resembling the requested one, and brought it to the princess.
-
While both the old man and the princess were marveling at the exquisite craftsmanship, the master jeweler unfortunately arrived to complain, stating that despite laboring for over a thousand days to make it, no payment had yet been ordered. This exposed the branch as a counterfeit; it was promptly rejected, and the prince retreated in deep humiliation.
-
The third suitor, the Minister of the Right Abe, was a wealthy man and did not resort to underhanded tricks; instead, he placed an order with a Chinese ship that arrived in Japan that year, requesting them to purchase the robe of the fire-rat.
-
Before long, that merchant sent a skin garment-like object, accompanying it with a letter saying that with great difficulty he had obtained what was originally in India, and demanded the remainder of the payment previously entrusted.
-
The Minister looked at the item with delight; the robe was of a deep azure-blue color, and the tips of its fur gleamed like gold.
-
Thinking that this would undoubtedly please the princess and that he would surely become her bridegroom, he dressed himself up in his finest attire and set forth.
-
The princess also thought for a time that it might be genuine and worried inwardly, but reasoning that it ought not to burn in fire and intending to test it, she had fire set to it, whereupon it burned up helplessly with a blaze.
-
Thus, the Minister of the Right's expectations were completely shattered.
-
The fourth suitor, Grand Counselor Otomo, gathered his retainers, issued a strict command for them to bring back the jewel from the dragon's neck without fail, and handed out every bit of silk, cotton, and coin available in his estate to fund their travel expenses.
-
However, his retainers decried their master's folly, and under the pretense of going to retrieve the jewel, departed in their own respective directions or confined themselves to their own homes.
-
The Grand Counselor, growing impatient, eventually rowed out into the distant sea himself, intending to shoot the dragon down with an arrow the moment he spotted it. Instead, he was blown off course toward Kyushu, battered by violent thunderstorms, and then washed back to the shore of Akashi, where he lay collapsed on the beach like a corpse after being tossed about by the wind and waves.
-
With great difficulty, through the assistance of provincial officials, he was placed in a hand-litter and arrived home.
-
When his retainers rushed to his side to express their sympathy, the Grand Counselor opened his eyes, which had turned as red as apricots, and said,
-
"The dragon appeared to be like lightning itself.
-
Had I killed it, my own life would surely have been forfeit.
-
You did very well not to catch the dragon. What clever fellows you are!" Praising them in this manner, he rewarded them with the few provisions remaining in his house.
-
Naturally, he had lost all courage regarding the princess's impossible task, and crying out, "That Kaguya-hime is a great trickster!" he never dared to approach her again.
-
The fifth man, the Middle Counselor Isonokami, struggled to obtain the swallow's cowrie shell, and after consulting various people, decided to follow the advice of a certain subordinate man.
-
Thus, he got into a basket himself and had it pulled up to the high ridge of a roof by ropes. While searching the place where a swallow was laying eggs, his hand suddenly grasped a flat object. Overjoyed, he signaled for the basket to be lowered, but the person below fumbled the rope, causing it to snap cleanly. Misfortune would have it that he fell directly onto a cauldron below, losing consciousness.
-
When they gave him water and he finally came to his senses, he said,
-
"My back aches, but I have taken the cowry shell. Look here and see!"
-
so he said.
-
When everyone looked at it, it was not a cowry shell at all, but an old lump of swallow droppings.
-
From that moment on, the Middle Counselor could no longer stand on his own feet, and with his health further declining from despair, he passed away.
-
Of the five, he spent the least fortune, but in return for his foolish behavior, he suffered the most tragic fate.
-
Before long, rumors that Kaguya-hime was matchless in her beauty reached the ears of the reigning Emperor, who said to a certain lady-in-waiting,
-
"Go and see what the princess looks like."
-
so he commanded.
-
The lady-in-waiting went at once to the house of the old bamboo cutter, delivered the imperial decree, and stated that she must meet the princess by all means. The old man respectfully conveyed this message to the princess.
-
However, the princess replied,
-
"I possess no exceptional beauty, and so I must beg to be excused from meeting the imperial messenger."
-
She stubbornly refused, and whether coaxed or scolded, she would not agree to meet. The lady-in-waiting thus returned to the palace feeling quite humiliated and reported the matter to the Emperor.
-
The Emperor then issued a further command to the old man, stating, "If you present the princess for court service, I shall bestow an official rank upon you.
-
Somehow reason with the princess and convince her.
-
As a parent, surely such a task cannot be beyond your power."
-
When the old man conveyed this exactly to the princess and pleaded with her to obey the Emperor's words and grant his own wish,
-
"If you force me to enter court service, my body will vanish from sight. I would only live to see you receive your rank, and then I would die," the princess replied.
-
Hearing this, the old man was startled and cried out,
-
"Even if I receive a rank, what good would it do me if I lose you to death? However, there is surely no reason why entering court service should cause you to die."
-
so saying he lamented, but as the princess only grew all the more reluctant and showed no sign of listening in the least, the old man too was left at his wit's end, and replied that she would by no means enter the Imperial Court,
-
"Since she is not a child born into my own household, but merely one I found in the mountains long ago and raised, her disposition is quite different from that of ordinary people of the world. It is deeply regrettable, but..." he stated most apologetically.
-
he added, bowing in awe.
-
Upon hearing this, the Emperor decided that he would go to see the princess himself under the guise of an imperial hunting excursion to the hills near the old man's house. Having the old man agree to this, he arrived at the princess's house on the appointed day.
-
There, he beheld a woman shining with a dazzling radiance.
-
Thinking that this must surely be Kaguya-hime, he approached her, whereupon the woman fled toward the inner rooms.
-
When he caught her by the sleeve, she hid her face, but from the fleeting glance he had caught initially, he found her to be even more beautiful than rumors had described.
-
I will not let you escape. I shall take you with me to the palace," he declared. "If I were one born in this land, I would indeed enter your court service. But since I am not, it will be impossible for you to take me away," the princess said. so the princess stated to him.
-
"No, that cannot be. I shall take you with me regardless."
-
As he attempted to place her into the palanquin prepared beforehand, the princess's form vanished like a shadow.
-
The Emperor was astonished and said,
-
"In that case, I shall no longer try to take you away.
-
At least return to your original form and let me look upon you. Once I see you, I shall return home." When he spoke these words, the princess presently reassumed her original form. Having no other choice, the Emperor returned that day, but from then on, he came to feel that even those women he had previously thought exceedingly beautiful could not bear comparison with the princess.
-
So, when His Majesty occasionally sent letters and poems, as she rendered replies to each and every one, he gradually managed to console his heart.
-
In this manner, about three years passed by.
-
From the early spring of that year, for some unknown reason, Kaguya-hime began to grieve whenever it was a fine, moonlit night, gazing up at the moon.
-
That feeling gradually intensified, and on such occasions as the full moon night of the seventh month, she did nothing but weep.
-
The old couple grew worried and urged her to stop looking at the moon, but
-
"I cannot bear not to look at the moon,"
-
So saying, when the time came for the moon to rise, she would nevertheless go out of her way to step out onto the veranda and lament.
-
The old man found this both strange and deeply concerning, so one day, he asked her for the reason, whereupon she replied:
-
"I have thought of telling you many times before, but fearing it would cause you worry, I could not bring myself to confess. To tell you the truth, I am not a human being of this land.
-
I am a resident of the Capital of the Moon.
-
Due to a certain past connection, I have been living in this world, but the time has now come for me to return.
-
When the envoys come to fetch me on the night of the full moon this eighth month, I must part from you and return to the heavens. Anticipating how deeply you will surely grieve then, I have been sorrowful for a long time."
-
Saying this, the princess broke into even bitterer tears.
-
Hearing this, the old man also began to weep as if he had lost his mind.
-
"No matter who comes to fetch you, I will never surrender my child, whom I found inside the bamboo and have raised with such care all these months and years. If you are taken away, I shall surely die."
-
"My parents in the Capital of the Moon sent me to this land for what they said would be a short while, but many years have already passed. Having forgotten my birth parents and grown so close and dear to the two of you here, it truly breaks my heart to leave your side."
-
The two of them wept loudly together.
-
The servants of the household, too, found it so sorrowful to bid a final farewell to the princess—who was not only beautiful of face but also elegant and gentle of heart—that neither food nor drink could pass their throats.
-
When this news reached the ears of the Emperor, he dispatched a messenger to express his sympathy.
-
The old man explained the situation in full detail, and
-
"She says that on the fifteenth day of this eighth month, envoys will come from heaven to fetch her. At that time, please dispatch a force of men to capture the people of the Capital of the Moon,"
-
so she pleaded through her tears.

When the messenger returned and reported precisely that, the Emperor took pity on the old man, and when at last the fifteenth day arrived, dispatched a man named Kōno no Shōshō as an imperial envoy, sending two thousand warriors to guard the house of the Bamboo-Cutter Old Man.
-
Thus, the forces were divided—one thousand on the roof and another thousand upon the earthen embankments around the house—with plans to strike down and drive away the people descending from heaven.
-
In addition, the many servants employed in the household were eagerly waiting, fully prepared for a fight.
-
Inside the house, the women kept watch; the old woman held the princess close inside the storehouse, while the old man locked the storehouse door and stood guard at the entrance.
-
At that moment, the princess said:
-
"No matter how much you do, it will be of no use. When the people of that land arrive, every single door will open on its own, and those who intend to fight will grow numb and weak, losing all their strength."
-
"Nonsense! If those envoys dare to show up, I'll give them a harsh lesson and drive them right back!"
-
the old man declared defiantly.
-
The princess, too, lamented once more, saying that when she thought of parting from the elderly couple without seeing them through their remaining years, she felt no joy at all about returning to that land where neither old age nor sorrow existed.
-
Before long, just as midnight seemed to arrive, the area around the house suddenly grew bright, illuminated by a radiance ten times more powerful than a full moon, so intense that even the pores on people's skin could be seen.
-
At that moment, beings riding upon clouds descended from the sky and lined up in a row in mid-air, about five feet above the ground.
-
"They've come!"
-
And, as the warriors took up their weapons and sought to confront them, every single one of them, as though possessed by something, lost the will to fight and could exert no strength, merely blinking their eyes in a daze.
-
The people of the moon then brought forward a flying carriage.
-
One who appeared to be their leader called out to the old man from within, saying:
-
"Listen, old man! Because you performed a few small deeds of goodness, we granted you the princess for a brief time to assist you, allowing you to amass great wealth in gold. But now, the princess's sin has been expiated, and we have come to fetch her. Return her to us without delay!"
-
so he shouted.
-
When the old man hesitated slightly, they paid him no heed, and calling out,
-
"Come now, Princess, you ought not to remain in such a filthy place as this."
-
So saying, as they brought forward that famous carriage, strangely enough, even the firmly closed lattice doors and storehouse opened of themselves, and the princess's body slipped smoothly out.
-
As the old man struggled frantically to hold her back, the princess gently restrained him. She wrote a parting letter and handed it to him, and then wrote another letter to be presented to the Emperor. Attaching to it a jar of the elixir of immortality brought by the moon people, she handed it to the imperial envoy. Then, donning the robe of heavenly feathers, she boarded the carriage and ascended high into the sky, surrounded by about a hundred celestial beings.
-
Watching her depart, the old couple raised their voices and wept bitterly once more, but it was all in vain.
-
Meanwhile, the imperial envoy returned to the palace, reported every detail of that night's events, and presented the letter and the elixir to the Emperor.
-
Having heard that the mountain closest to heaven lay in Suruga Province, the Emperor commanded an official messenger to climb that mountain and burn the elixir of immortality upon its peak.
-
From that time on, the mountain came to be called the Mountain of Immortality (Fuji), and it is said that the smoke from that elixir still rises into the clouds to this very day.
