1. La Lepre e la Tartaruga

    The Hare and the Tortoise

In a forest full of life lived many animals who all knew each other.

The hare was undoubtedly the fastest, and he never missed an opportunity to remind the others.

One day the hare met the tortoise, who was moving slowly along the path, and began to laugh heartily.

  5. —Tartaruga!

    —Tortoise!

Where do you think you're going with those short little legs?

It will take you a week just to get to the brook!

The tortoise raised her head calmly and said, —Laugh all you want, hare.

But if you like, I bet that in a race I will reach the big oak tree at the end of the meadow before you.

The forest animals all rushed over to listen.

  11. La lepre si sganasciò dalle risate. —Una gara con te?

The hare split his sides laughing. —A race with you?

  12. Accetto, accetto di sicuro!

    I accept, I definitely accept!

  13. Il vecchio gufo fece da giudice. —Pronti, via!

The old owl acted as the judge. —Ready, set, go!

  14. La lepre partì come un fulmine e in un batter d'occhio era già scomparsa all'orizzonte.

The hare took off like lightning and in the blink of an eye had already vanished over the horizon.

The tortoise set off at her steady pace, slow and sure, without ever stopping.

After a while, the hare turned to look at the meadow behind him: there was not a sign of the tortoise. "I am so far ahead that I could sleep for a whole hour and still win," he thought.

He found a nice spot in the shade of a flowering bush, curled up on the cool grass, and closed his eyes.

  18. Si addormentò in un attimo.

He fell asleep in an instant.

  19. La tartaruga intanto camminava.

    Meanwhile, the tortoise kept walking.

  20. Un passo, poi un altro.

    One step, then another.

  21. Ancora un altro.

    And another one.

She passed by the sleeping hare without making the slightest sound, continued up the hill, crossed the meadow, and drew closer and closer to the oak tree.

The sun was already low when the hare snapped his eyes open.

He gasped, jumped up with a bound, and began to run at full speed.

But when he reached the big oak tree, all the animals were already gathered there to celebrate the tortoise, who had crossed the finish line a few minutes earlier with a calm little smile on her face.

The hare lowered his ears, quiet and ashamed.

The tortoise said serenely, —It is not the fastest who wins, but the most steady.

And from that day on, all the animals of the forest remembered that lesson forever.
