1. 5.

    5.

  2. A herczegfiú és a medvék, farkasok, rókák királya.

The Prince and the King of the Bears, Wolves, and Foxes.

Once upon a time, far, far away, beyond even the bitter orange trees, where they shod lice and fleas with copper horseshoes so they wouldn't stumble into trouble or deep pits, and even beyond that, there stood a great poplar tree with ninety-nine crows on it, and whoever does not listen to my tale, may their eyes be gouged out.

Truth be told, there was once a prince who had a son and a daughter; and when the old folks died, the two of them set off to wander the world.

As they went along, walking and walking, they found a large cross-marked stone with such writing on it that only the prince's son could read it.

It was written on the stone that whoever lifted that stone out, beneath it there would be a plate, and whoever placed it against their chest would become so strong as no man in the world had ever been.

  7. Kapja magát a herczeg fia a leánynyal, a követ kidőtik, megkapják a tángyért, s béteszi a fiú a kebelébe.

So the prince's son and the girl set to work, tipped the stone over, found the plate, and the boy placed it inside his bosom.

  8. No most mán mennek és találnak egy várost.

Well, now they went on and found a city.

But not a single soul lived in that city.

They set off, find a large manor house containing twelve rooms, and see that some roast meat is baking in that house.

  11. No gondolják, e nekik nagyon jó lesz most, mert nagyon éhesek voltak.

Well, they thought, this would be very good for them now, for they were very hungry.

  12. S mikor ennének, tizenkét tolvaj odamënën.

And just as they were about to eat, twelve thieves came along.

They asked: "How did you dare come here when it was us who wiped out all the people from this city!"

  14. No most mán a herczegfiú azt mondja, engedjenek meg, míg jóllakott, s adjanak neki egy kardot, a melyik legrosszabb, és megáll véllik viaskodni.

Well, now the prince's son told them to wait until he had eaten his fill, and to give him the worst sword they had, and he would stand and fight with them.

But his sister was very frightened and begged them to spare her brother.

  16. No most mán egy legrosszabb kardot adtak a bátyjának, és kimentek a mezőre, megkezdődött a viaskodás.

Well, now they gave her brother the worst sword, went out into the field, and the fighting began.

  17. A herczegfiú három-négygyel húzta a kardját, és mindegyiknek a fejét elvette.

The prince's son struck three or four times with his sword, and took off the head of every last one of them.

  18. No most mán hazamentek, vígan voltak az ő tesvérével.

Well, now they went back home and made merry together, he and his sister.

And as the prince's son and his sister were exploring the rooms, they found a thief bound inside a barrel with iron hoops.

And when he saw it, he locked the door and ordered his sister not to dare open it.

But hardly had his sister believed her brother was gone when she already opened the room, and the moment the thief saw her, he at once asked her for a glass of water.

  22. Adott, és rögtön lement mind a három abroncs.

She gave it to him, and instantly all three hoops fell off.

Now the thief stepped out, and the girl fell deeply in love with him, for he was a very handsome and clever man.

  24. Elbújtatta éczczoka, és nappal mind együtt voltak a leánynyal.

She hid him at night, and during the day they stayed together, he and the girl.

  25. Azon tanácskoztak, miképpen lehetne elpusztítani a bátyját.

They took counsel on how they might destroy her brother.

They devised a plan that the girl should pretend to be ill at night and cry out loud about how sick she was.

  27. Mondta, hogyha hozna valaki neki élő-haló vizet, ő attól megjavulna.

He said that if someone were to bring him living-dead water, he would recover from it.

His elder brother also pledged that he would go and bring it, even if it would cost him his life.

  29. Elment egy nagy kertbe, a hol a mennyi róka a világon, mind ott volt.

He went into a great garden, where all the foxes in the world were gathered.

He started hacking them down, and he cut them all down, so that exactly three remained alive.

Those begged him not to cut them down, for they would give him a new whistle, and if he blew into it, they would come to his aid.

He took the whistle from them, drew from the living-dead water, carried it home, and gave it to his sibling.

He drank from it, and immediately recovered, since he was not even ill.

  34. No mámost megint azon tanácskoztak a tolvajjal, hogy más éczczoka ës legyen beteg, sikoltsa el magát, és mondja, hogyha hozna néki valaki három arany almát, attól ő megjavulna.

Now then, they again conspired with the thief that on another night he should also become sick, cry out, and say that if someone brought him three golden apples, he would recover from them.

His elder brother also went again into a garden, where all the wolves in the world were gathered.

  36. No már most még nagyobb baj volt a farkasokkal viaskodni, de azokat ës mind legyőzte, csupán hármat hagyott meg, a kik könyörögtek az ők életükért.

Now it was an even greater trouble to fight the wolves, but he defeated them all as well, leaving only three alive, who begged for their lives.

They again gave him a whistle, saying that when he needed it, he should only blow it, for they would go to his aid.

  38. Elvette a sípot, hazavitte a három arany almát, odaadta a testvérének, s minyát meggyógyult.

He took the whistle, carried home the three golden apples, gave them to his sibling, and he was healed at once.

Well now, the thief and his sibling were greatly frightened that he could not be destroyed by any means.

  40. Megint kitalált a tolvaj valamit.

    The thief devised something again.

  41. Hogy lásson álmot és sikoltsa el magát.

That he should have a dream and cry out.

He said he was mortally ill, but if someone brought three golden pears, he would recover from them.

His elder brother also went again the next day into a garden.

  44. Ott volt a mennyi medve a világon, mind ott volt.

There were all the bears in the world, all gathered there.

Now it was an even greater trouble, but he reckoned thus:

    – For my brother's sake I will try, but even if it costs my life, I will bring him pears.

  47. No már most megkezdődött a viaskodás.

    Well now, the struggle began.

  48. A medvéket csak úgy aprította, mind más ember a fűszálakat.

He chopped the bears just as another man mows blades of grass.

Only three remained again, and they begged him to spare their lives, for they would give him a whistle, and when he needed it he should blow into it and they would go to his aid.

  50. Elvette a sípot és a három aranykörtét hazavitte a testvérének, megette és rögtön megjavult.

He took the whistle and carried home the three golden pears to his sibling; he ate them and immediately recovered.

Now the thief and the girl were even more frightened, that they could in no way destroy the brother.

The thief devised something again and told the girl to prepare a bath for him, and to tell him that the foxes, the wolves, and the bears had all breathed upon him, so a little bath would do him good.

  53. Este, mikor haza mënyën a bátyja, már kész a fërëdő.

In the evening, when the brother came home, the bath was already prepared.

She told the brother to undress and bathe.

  55. Mennyit fáradott utána.

How much he had toiled for her sake.

  56. De azt felelte, neki nem kell fërëdő.

But he replied that he did not need a bath.

But his sister kept saying it so much that he finally undressed and sat into the bath, yet he took his sword with him.

But his sister kept telling him until he set it down, saying there was nothing to fear, no one would take his sword.

  59. Akkor a leány elsikojtotta magát.

Then the girl let out a scream.

But lest I forget to mention, the thief was hidden away.

  61. Akkor rögtön eléugrott és a tángyért elkapta, bétette ő a kebelébe.

Then he immediately leaped out and snatched the sword, tucking it into his bosom.

  62. Azt mondja a herczegfiúnak:

    He said to the prince:

  63. – No most, kutya, miként pusztítsalak el?

    – Well now, you dog, how shall I destroy you?

  64. A herczegfiú azt mondja:

    The prince said:

  65. – Várj, hogy öltözzem fel.

    – Wait, let me get dressed.

I have three little whistles; let me blow three mournful tunes, and then I care not how you take my life.

  67. Meg ës engedi a tolvaj, felöltözik a herczegfiú, kimennek az udvarba, eléveszi a három sípot, beléfúj.

The thief allowed it; the prince dressed, they went out into the yard, he took out the three whistles and blew into them.

  68. S a hogy beléfúj, rögtön, a világon a mennyi róka, a mennyi farkas, medve, mind eléjöttek.

And as soon as he blew into them, immediately all the foxes, all the wolves, and all the bears in the world came before them.

  69. Azt kérdezik:

    They asked:

  70. – Mit poroncsolsz, édes gazdánk?

    – What do you command, dear master?

    – I command this, my servants: that you tear this scoundrel, the thief, to pieces at once.

They tore him to pieces on the spot, not even leaving him time to say another word.

  73. No mán mostan a testvérét elészólítja.

Now then, he called his sister before him.

  74. Azt mondja: – Ehhez voltam érdemes?

He said: – Was I worthy of this?

  75. Ilyen igaz testvérem voltál-é hëzzám.

Were you such a true sibling to me?

  76. Mán most egyébbel nem büntetlek, hanem a hol a tolvaj volt, abba a hordóba béabroncsozlak.

Now I shall punish you with nothing else, but I will have you hooped into that barrel where the thief was.

  77. Egy üres kádat elejébe tett.

He placed an empty tub before her.

    – Fill this with your tears, and then die!

  79. No mán mostan a rókakirály, s farkaskirály, s medvekirály semmiképen se akart tölle elmaradni.

Now then, the fox-king, the wolf-king, and the bear-king did not want to part from him by any means.

  80. Hát négyen indultak el a nagy világba.

So the four of them set out into the wide world.

  81. Mentek, mendegéltek, elértek abba a városba, a melyikben a király lakott.

They went, they wandered, and they reached that city where the king lived.

  82. S abba a városba, mikor bémentek, egy kórcsomába értek.

And when they entered that city, they arrived at a tavern.

They asked the tavern keeper what the reason was that this city was entirely draped in black mourning.

  84. Azt mondja a kórcsomáros:

    The tavern keeper said:

    – I'm surprised you don't know what great trouble is here.

In this city there is only one well, from which all the people of the city drink, and in that well there is a nine-headed dragon.

Every year a maiden must be thrown into the well, for if not, the well gives out so much water that the entire city will be submerged.

  88. Most mán a király leányán vagyon a sor, hogy bévessék.

Now it is the king's daughter's turn to be cast in.

  89. Azért vagyon a város ujan fekete gyászba béhúzva.

That is why the city is newly draped in black mourning.

The king proclaimed that whoever defeats the nine-headed dragon would be given his daughter and half his kingdom, but so far no valiant man had come forward who could have fought with it.

The prince rejoiced at this, and said that he would fight the dragon.

They went to the king, and he announced that he would be the valiant one who would fight the dragon.

  93. A király rögtön ës neki igérte fele királyságát és a leányát.

The king immediately promised him half his kingdom and his daughter.

The king and the great men of the country went to watch when he would do battle.

  95. Oda ës ment.

    He went there as well.

  96. A sárkány, mikor kijött a kútból, rögtön levágta két fejét.

When the dragon came out of the well, he immediately cut off two of its heads.

But by then the prince had grown very weak, and his companions – the bear-king, the wolf-king, and the fox-king – tore off one head each of the dragon while he rested a little.

  98. No most mán újra erőt vett magának, egy csapásra lecsapta három fejét.

Now then, he gathered his strength again and struck off three of its heads with a single blow.

  99. Még csak egy maradott.

    Only one remained.

By then the dragon had become so enraged that had it not been for the bear, the wolf, and the fox, it would have been the end of him at once.

But they sprang at it and tore off its last head as well.

  102. No mán most igazi nagy öröme volt a királynak, hogy az ő egyetlen egy leányát megszabadította.

Now then, the king had true great joy that he had freed his only daughter.

  103. Örvendett az egész nép.

    The whole people rejoiced.

  104. Kikájtották királyuknak.

    They proclaimed him their king.

The old king was intent on them marrying at once, but he did not accept it, saying that he would go away for another year to try his fortune.

The king's daughter did not stay behind either, but said:

  107. – Én ës fogok menni magával, a hova mënën.

    – I too shall go with you, wherever you go.

  108. Mentek mán most öten a nagyvilágba.

Now the five of them went out into the wide world.

As they went, wandering along, they reached a great beautiful green mountain.

They were tired, and the prince and the king's daughter lay down.

  111. Elaludtak.

    They fell asleep.

The bear and the wolf went off to hunt, to catch some rabbit so they could prepare it as roast for noon.

  113. A rókát ott hatták, hogy őrözze.

They left the fox there to keep watch.

But during this time a rabbit ran off, and the fox after it.

  115. No mán most egy nagy czigány odamënën egy karóval.

Now then, a great gypsy came along with a stake.

Just then the king's daughter woke up, and the gypsy said to her:

    – Don't say a word, or you will die at once.

  118. A herczegfiúnak kihúzta a kardját és a nyakát ketté vágta.

He drew the prince's sword and cut his neck in two.

He made the king's daughter swear seven times that they would go home together and she would be his wife, and that she would claim that he had defeated the dragon.

But lest I forget to mention, the prince had cut off the tip of the dragon's tongue, but the gypsy also cut off what still remained, as proof that he had defeated the dragon.

  121. No most mán hazamennek, és a királynak jelenti, hogy ő most mán átólveszi a leányát, mivel a sárkányt ő győzte le.

Now then, they go home, and he reports to the king that he will now take over his daughter, since he had defeated the dragon.

The king agreed to it, except that the daughter had no liking for it at all.

  123. No most mán térjünk vissza, a herczegfiúval mi történt?

Now then, let us return: what happened to the prince?

Well, the wolf and the bear returned and saw that their master was dead and the king's daughter was not there.

And when the fox came back, the bear gave him a good slapping for not being able to look after their good prince.

  126. Rögtön megporoncsolta, hogy a róka hozzon élő-haló vizet és a farkas hozzon élő-haló burujánt.

He immediately commanded that the fox should bring living-dead water and the wolf should bring living-dead balsam.

  127. El ës mentek, hozták, megöntözte a helyet, a hol elvágták a nyakát, élő-haló burujánnal békötözte, beléfújt a szájába.

They went and brought them; he sprinkled the place where his neck had been cut, bound it with living-dead balsam, and blew into his mouth.

  128. Csakhogy mi történik?

    But what happens?

  129. Felül, és mondja a medvének:

He sits up and says to the bear:

  130. – Édes szolgám, jól elaludtam.

    – My dear servant, I have slept well.

  131. – Abizën të, hogyha mük ne lettünk volna, sose ëbredtél volna fel!

    – Indeed, if we had not been here, you would never have woken up!

  132. No most mán tüzet raktak, jól ettek, és visszamentek a városba, abba a vendéglőbe, a hol meghallották, hogy mér van a város gyászban.

Now then, they made a fire, ate well, and went back to the city, to that tavern where they had heard why the city was in mourning.

  133. Most mán mindenki vígan volt, mert ëppen a király a leányának tartotta a lakodalmát.

Now everyone was merry, for the king was just holding his daughter's wedding feast.

The fox said that he would go into that wedding to see what sort of son-in-law the king would have.

  135. El ës mënën a róka, rögtön megüsmeri a királyleány, rögtön egy kosarat megtöltött mindenféle süteménynyel és étellel s a nyakába akasztotta, s a rókát ës jól megvendéglette.

The fox went, and the king's daughter recognized him at once; she immediately filled a basket with all kinds of pastries and food, hung it around his neck, and also treated the fox well.

  136. Mikor indult hazafelé nagy jó kedvvel a róka, a kutyák, hogy meghallották, hogy milyen vígan orgonál, mindent elloptak a kosárból.

When the fox set off homeward in great good cheer, the dogs, hearing how merrily he was piping, stole everything from the basket.

  137. Mikor mán hazament, a medve jól felpofozta.

When he got home, the bear gave him a good slapping.

  138. – Ha te gyáva vagy, mért mentél oda?

    – If you are a coward, why did you go there?

  139. Most mán a farkas kéredzett el.

Now the wolf asked for leave to go.

He went, and the king's daughter recognized him at once; she also treated him well, and put a basket with all sorts of things around his neck.

  141. Felkötötte a nyakára és ment hazafelé.

He tied it around his neck and went homeward.

But this time he brought it home so that his master could eat from it, and the bear too.

  143. No mán most a medve kéredzett el a gazdájától.

Now then, the bear asked for leave from his master.

He too went, and when the king's daughter saw him, she also gave him provisions in a basket.

  145. A mint ment hazafelé, jól elvágta magát.

As he went homeward, he made a great show of himself.

  146. A kutyák megint eléjöttek, de ő csak a fogát csattogtatta, s mind elfutottak tölle, s mindent hazavitt szerencsésen.

The dogs came out again, but he only clattered his teeth, and they all ran away from him, and he brought everything home safely.

  147. No mán most elmënën a herczegfiú ës, hogy lássa meg estére, hogy az ő menyasszonyával ki kerülhetett ëssze.

Now then, the prince also went, to see by evening who could have gotten together with his bride.

But he lingered there; the lords closed the door.

They said that every man here should tell a tale.

  150. A herczegfiúra ës elkerült a sor, hogy mondjon.

The turn also came to the prince to tell one.

The gypsy who had taken the king's daughter kept saying that they should not let him speak, for he would not know anything anyway.

But lest I forget to mention, the gypsy sat on nine cushions.

And the lords gave the prince no peace; he had to speak.

  154. A herczegfiú, a mind elkezdte a mesét mondani, hogy mi történt vélle, a czigánynak a feneke alól mindegyre egy párna kiszökött.

When the prince began to tell the tale of what had happened to him, one cushion after another slipped out from under the gypsy's bottom.

When he finished his tale, that he had defeated the dragon, he showed them that if they did not believe him, they should look at the tip of the dragon's tongue.

  156. Hát ëppen úgy találták, hogy mind talált.

And indeed they found it exactly as he had said.

  157. S a czigányt rögtön a király a ló farka után köttette s a város utczáin széjjelszaggattatta, s a herczegfiúnak adta az ő leányát.

And the king immediately had the gypsy tied to the tail of a horse and torn apart through the city streets, and he gave his daughter to the prince.

  158. Olyan lakodalmat csáltak, hétszerte nagyobbat, mind azelőtt.

They held such a wedding feast, seven times greater than before.

There were plenty of dishes and plates; he was a godly man who got even a single drop of soup.

  160. Holnap legyen a kietëk vendégsége.

Tomorrow let there be the feast of those who are hungry.
