Trnoružica (Uspavana ljepotica)
Sleeping Beauty (Briar Rose)
-
Once upon a time, a king and queen ruled in a faraway land where there were fairies in those days.
-
That king and queen had plenty of money, plenty of fine clothes to wear, plenty of good things to eat and drink, and a carriage to drive in every day; but though they had been married for many years, they had no children, and this saddened them deeply.
-
But one day, as the queen was walking by the river at the end of the garden, she saw a poor little fish that had thrown itself out of the water and lay on the bank gasping for air, almost dead.
-
Then the queen took pity on the little fish and put it back into the river; and before swimming away, the fish raised its head out of the water and said:
-
‘I know your wish, and it shall be fulfilled in return for your kindness to me – you will soon have a daughter.’
-
What the little fish had foretold soon came true; the queen gave birth to a baby girl, so beautiful that the king could not stop looking at her for joy, and he said he would throw a great feast, celebrate, and show the child to the whole land.
-
Stoga je pozvao svoje rođake, plemiće, prijatelje i susjede.
Therefore, he invited his relatives, nobles, friends, and neighbors.
-
No kraljica reče:
But the queen said:
-
‘Pozvat ću i vile kako bi bile dobre i blage prema našoj maloj kćeri.’
‘I will invite the fairies too, so that they may be kind and gentle to our little daughter.’
-
There were thirteen fairies in the kingdom; but since the king and queen had only twelve golden plates for them to eat from, they were forced to leave one of the fairies uninvited.
-
So twelve fairies came, each with a tall red hat on her head, red high-heeled shoes on her feet, and a long white magic wand in her hand; and after the feast was over, they gathered in a circle and gave all their best gifts to the little princess.
-
One gave her goodness, another beauty, a third wealth, and so on until she had everything good in the world.
-
Just as eleven fairies had blessed her, a great noise was heard in the courtyard and news arrived that the thirteenth fairy had come, with a black hat on her head, black shoes on her feet, and a broom in her hand; and soon she entered the festive hall.
-
Since she had not been invited to the feast, she was very angry, scolded the king and queen, and decided to take her revenge.
-
Stoga povika:
Therefore she cried out:
-
‘In her fifteenth year, the king's daughter shall prick herself on a spindle and fall down dead.’
-
Then the twelfth of the good fairies, who had not yet given her gift, stepped forward and said that the evil wish had to be fulfilled, but that she could soften its misfortune; so her gift was that when the king's daughter pricked herself on a spindle, she would not truly die, but only fall asleep for a hundred years.
-
However, the king still hoped to save his dear child completely from the threatened evil; so he commanded that all the spindles in the kingdom be bought up and burned.
-
But all the gifts of the first eleven fairies had in the meantime come true; for the princess was so beautiful, well-mannered, kind, and wise that everyone who knew her loved her.
-
It so happened that, on the very day she turned fifteen, the king and queen were not at home, and she was left alone in the palace.
-
So she wandered around alone, looking at all the rooms and chambers, until at last she came to an old tower, to which narrow stairs led, ending at a small door.
-
In the door was a golden key, and when she turned it, the door opened wide, and there sat an old lady spinning very busily.
-
‘E pa, dobra majko,’ reče princeza;
‘Well, good mother,’ said the princess;
-
‘što to radiš ondje?’
‘what are you doing there?’
-
‘Predem,’ reče stara gospođa i klimne glavom, pjevušeći pjesmicu, dok je kolovrat zazujao.
‘I am spinning,’ said the old lady and nodded her head, humming a tune, as the spinning wheel hummed.
-
‘Kako se ljupko okreće ta mala stvarca!’
‘How charmingly that little thing turns!’
-
reče princeza, uzme vreteno i pokuša presti.
said the princess, took the spindle, and tried to spin.
-
But scarcely had she touched it, when the fairy's prophecy came true; the spindle pricked her and she fell lifeless to the ground.
-
However, she was not dead, but had merely fallen into a deep sleep; and the king and queen, who had just returned home, and their entire court, also fell asleep; and the horses slept in the stables, and the dogs in the yard, the pigeons on the roof of the house, and even the flies slept on the walls.
-
Even the fire on the hearth stopped burning and fell asleep; the spit stopped, and the roast goose for the king's dinner stopped turning; and the cook, who at that moment was pulling the scullery boy's hair to give him a slap for doing something wrong, let him go, and both fell asleep; the butler, who was secretly tasting the beer, fell asleep with the mug at his lips: and so everything stopped and fell sound asleep.
-
Soon a great hedge of thorns grew around the palace, and every year it grew higher and thicker; until at last the old palace was completely surrounded and hidden, so that neither the roof nor the chimneys could be seen.
-
But throughout the land spread the story of the beautiful sleeping Briar Rose (for so they called the king's daughter): so from time to time several king's sons came who tried to break through the thicket into the palace.
-
However, none of them could do so; for the thorns and bushes caught them, as if with hands; and there they stuck fast and died miserably.
-
Nakon mnogo, mnogo godina u tu zemlju stiže jedan kraljev sin: a neki mu starac ispriča priču o trnovitom šipražju; i kako iza njega stoji predivna palača, te kako u njoj spava čudesna princeza, zvana Trnoružica, zajedno sa cijelim svojim dvorom.
After many, many years, a king's son arrived in that land: and an old man told him the story of the thorny thicket; and how behind it stood a wonderful palace, and how inside slept a marvelous princess, called Briar Rose, together with her entire court.
-
He also told how he had heard from his grandfather that many, many princes had come and tried to break through the thicket, but that all had gotten stuck in it and died.
-
Tada mladi princ reče:
Then the young prince said:
-
‘Sve me to neće uplašiti; ići ću i vidjeti tu Trnoružicu.’
‘All that will not scare me; I will go and see this Briar Rose.’
-
The old man tried to stop him, but he was determined to go.
-
On that very day a hundred years had passed; and when the prince came to the thicket, he saw only beautifully blooming bushes through which he passed with ease, and they closed behind him just as densely as before.
-
Then at last he reached the palace, and there in the courtyard the dogs were sleeping; and the horses stood in the stables; and on the roof sat the pigeons fast asleep, with their heads under their wings.
-
And when he entered the palace, flies were sleeping on the walls; the spit stood motionless; the butler had a mug of beer at his lips, ready to take a sip; the maid was sitting with poultry in her lap, ready to pluck its feathers; and the cook in the kitchen was still holding his hand raised, as if he were about to strike the boy.
-
Then he went further, and everything was so quiet that he could hear his every breath; until at last he came to the old tower and opened the door of the small room where Briar Rose was; and there she lay, fast asleep on a couch beside the window.
-
She looked so beautiful that he could not take his eyes off her, so he bent down and kissed her.
-
But the moment he kissed her, she opened her eyes, awoke, and smiled at him; and they went out together; and soon the king and queen and the whole court awoke too, and looked at each other with great wonder.
-
And the horses shook themselves, and the dogs leaped and barked; the pigeons pulled their heads out from under their wings, looked around, and flew off into the fields; the flies on the walls buzzed again; the fire in the kitchen flared up; the spit turned, and the roast goose for the king's dinner turned; the butler drank his sip of beer; the maid continued plucking the poultry; and the cook gave the boy a slap.
-
And then the prince and Briar Rose were married, and a wedding feast was prepared; and they lived happily together all their lives.
