Once upon a time, there were three bears who lived together in a little house of their own in the woods.

One of them was a Little, Small, Wee Bear; one was a Middle-sized Bear; and the other was a Great, Huge Bear.

They each had a bowl for their porridge: the Little, Small, Wee Bear had a small bowl; the Middle-sized Bear had a middle-sized bowl; and the Great, Huge Bear had a huge bowl.

They each had a chair to sit in: the Little, Small, Wee Bear had a small chair; the Middle-sized Bear had a middle-sized chair; and the Great, Huge Bear had a huge chair.

They each also had a bed to sleep in: the Little, Small, Wee Bear had a small bed; the Middle-sized Bear had a middle-sized bed; and the Great, Huge Bear had a huge bed.

One day, after making their porridge for breakfast and pouring it into their porridge bowls, they walked out into the woods together to let the porridge cool, so they wouldn't burn their mouths by eating it too fast.

While they were out walking, a little old woman came to the door of the house.

She was certainly not a good or honest old woman, for first she looked in through the window, then peeped through the keyhole, and seeing no one inside, she reached out and lifted the latch.

The door was not locked, because the three bears were good bears who never harmed anyone and never imagined that anyone would come to harm them.

So the little old woman pushed open the door and walked inside, and she was overjoyed when she saw the porridge on the table.

If she had been a good old woman, she would have waited for the three bears to return, and they might have even invited her to join them for breakfast, for they were good bears—a bit rough, as is the nature of bears, but very good-tempered and hospitable.

However, she was an impudent, bad old woman, and as soon as she entered, she set about helping herself.

So first she tried the porridge of the Great, Huge Bear, but found it too hot, and cursed at it for being so.

Then she tried the porridge of the Middle-sized Bear, but found it too cold, and cursed at it as well.

Then she went to try the porridge of the Little, Small, Wee Bear; it was neither too hot nor too cold, but just right. She liked it so much that she ate it all up.

But the wicked old woman still uttered a curse blaming the little bowl, saying it didn't hold enough.

Next, the little old woman sat down in the chair of the Great, Huge Bear, but found it too hard.

Then she sat down in the chair of the Middle-sized Bear, but found it too soft.

Then she sat down in the chair of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, and this chair was neither too hard nor too soft, but just right.

So she sat in it until the bottom of the chair gave way, and down she came, crash, onto the floor.

And the wicked old woman uttered another coarse curse because of this.

Then, the little old woman went upstairs into the bedroom where the three bears slept.

First, she lay down on the bed of the Great, Huge Bear, but found the head of the bed too high.

Then she lay down on the bed of the Middle-sized Bear, but found the foot of the bed too high.

Then she lay down on the bed of the Little, Small, Wee Bear, and this bed was neither too high at the head nor too high at the foot, but just right.

When the Little, Small, Wee Bear went to look at his bed, the bolster was in its place, and the pillow was in its place on top of the bolster, and upon the pillow was the ugly, dirty head of the little old woman—a head that had no business to be there, as she had no right to be there at all.

The window was open, for the three bears were very hygienic and clean bears who always opened their bedroom window when they got up in the morning.
