    Rumpelstiltskin

In a country far away, by the edge of a forest, ran a beautiful river; and upon that river stood a flour-mill.

The miller's house was nearby, and it so happened that the miller had an exceedingly beautiful daughter.

Moreover, she was very clever and wise; and the miller was so proud of her that one day he told the king of the country, who used to hunt in the forest, that his daughter could spin straw into gold.

Now, this king was very fond of wealth; and when he heard the miller's boast, his greed was stirred, and he sent for the girl to be brought before him.

Then he took her to a room in his palace where there was a great heap of straw, gave her a spinning wheel, and said, 'If you value your life, all this must be spun into gold before morning.'

It was in vain that the poor girl said it was only a foolish boast of her father's and that she could do no such thing as spin straw into gold: the door of the room was locked, and she was left alone.

She sat down in a corner of the room and began to weep over her ill fortune; when suddenly the door opened, and a strange-looking little man hobbled in and said, 'Good morning, my good girl; why are you weeping?'

    'Alas!'

she said, 'I must spin this straw into gold, and I do not know how it is to be done.'

'If I do it for you,' said the dwarf, 'what will you give me?'

    'My necklace,' replied the girl.

He agreed, sat down at the spinning wheel, and began to work while whistling and singing:

'Round and round, round and round, just look and see!

Turn the wheel, turn the wheel, make gold out of straw!'

And the wheel merrily went round and round; the work was soon finished, and all the straw was spun into gold.

When the king came and saw this, he was greatly astonished and pleased; but his greed for wealth grew even more, and he locked the miller's poor daughter up once again with a new task.

Then she did not know what to do, and sat down once again to cry; but soon the dwarf opened the door and said, 'What will you give me to do your work?'

'The ring on my finger,' she said.

So her little friend took the ring, sat down at the spinning wheel once more, and whistling and singing, began to say:

'Round and round, round and round, just look and see!

Turn the wheel, turn the wheel, make gold out of straw!'

Long before morning came, everything was finished once again.

The king was overjoyed to see this shining treasure; but still he was not satisfied: so he took the miller's daughter to an even larger heap and said, 'All this must be spun tonight; and if it is done, you shall become my queen.'

As soon as she was alone, the dwarf came in and said, 'What will you give me this third time in return for spinning gold for you?'

'I have nothing left,' she said.

'Then promise me,' said the little man, 'that when you become queen, you will give me the first child you have.'

'That may never happen,' thought the miller's daughter: and since she could think of no other way to get her work done, she said she would do as he asked.

The spinning wheel began to turn again with the same old song, and the dwarf once again spun the heap into gold.

The king came in the morning, and finding everything as he wished, was obliged to keep his word; he married the miller's daughter, and she became a real queen.

Upon the birth of her first child, she was overjoyed, and forgot all about the dwarf and her promise.

But one day he came into her room where she was sitting and playing with her baby, and reminded her of her promise.

Then she was bitterly grieved at her misfortune, and offered to give him all the riches of the kingdom if he would leave her alone, but it was all in vain; at last her tears softened him, and he said, 'I will give you three days' grace, and if during that time you can tell me my name, you may keep your child.'

Now the queen lay awake all night, thinking of all the strange names she had ever heard; and she sent messengers all over the land to find out new names.

The next day the little man came, and she began with Timothy, Ichabod, Benjamin, Jeremiah, and all the names she could remember; but to every one of them he said, 'Madam, that is not my name.'

The second day she began with all the comical names she could hear of, such as Bandy-legs, Hunchback, Crooked-feet, and the like; but the little gentleman still said to every name, 'Madam, that is not my name.'

On the third day, one of the messengers returned and said, 'I have been traveling for two days and could hear of no new names; but yesterday, as I was climbing a high hill among the trees of the forest, where the fox and the hare say good night to each other, I saw a little cottage; and a fire was burning in front of the cottage; and around the fire, a funny little dwarf was dancing on one leg and singing:

"Merrily will I brew. Today I'll brew, tomorrow I'll bake; merrily will I dance and sing, for the next day a guest will come. My lady has no idea that Rumpelstiltskin is my name!"'

When the queen heard this, she leaped for joy, and as soon as her little friend arrived, she sat upon her throne and called all her court to enjoy the fun; and the nurse stood beside her with the baby in her arms, as if it were all ready to be handed over.

Then the little man began to chuckle to himself at the thought of taking the poor child away to his cottage in the forest; and he cried out, 'Now tell me, Queen, what is my name?'

    'Is it John?'

    she asked.

    'No, Madam!'

    'Is it Tom?'

    'No, Madam!'

    'Is it Jamie?'

    'It is not that either.'

    'Can your name be Rumpelstiltskin?'

    said the queen slyly.

'A witch has told you!--a witch has told you!'

the little man cried out, and in a rage stomped his right foot so hard into the ground that he had to hold it with both hands to pull it out.

Then he ran away as fast as he could, while the nurse laughed and the baby cooed; and the whole court mocked him for taking so much trouble for nothing, saying, 'We wish you a very good morning and a joyful feast, Mr. Rumpelstiltskin!'
