The Tale of Peter Rabbit

श्रीमती खरगोश अपने चार छोटे बच्चों के साथ एक बड़े सनोवर के पेड़ की जड़ों के नीचे रहती थीं।

Mrs. Rabbit lived with her four little children underneath the roots of a very big fir tree.

तीनों बहनों के नाम फ्लॉप्सी, मॉप्सि और कॉटनटेल थे—और सबसे छोटे भाई का नाम पीटर था।

The names of the three sisters were Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail—and the youngest brother's name was Peter.

एक सुबह, श्रीमती खरगोश ने अपने बच्चों से कहा:

One morning, Mrs. Rabbit said to her children:

"आज तुम सब खेतों में और पगडंडी पर खेलने जा सकते हो, लेकिन मिस्टर मैक्ग्रेगर के बगीचे में कभी मत जाना! वहाँ तुम्हारे पिताजी के साथ एक दुर्घटना हो गई थी और मिसेस मैक्ग्रेगर ने उन्हें कचौड़ी में पका दिया था।"

"Today you may all go to play in the fields and down the lane, but never go into Mr. McGregor's garden! Your father had an accident there and Mrs. McGregor put him in a pie."

फ्लॉप्सी, मॉप्सि और कॉटनटेल भले और आज्ञाकारी खरगोश थे।

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail were good and obedient rabbits.

They went down to the fields and gathered juicy blackberries there.

But Peter was very naughty; he ran straight towards Mr. McGregor's garden and squeezed under the gate.

What wonderful things there were in the garden!

Peter first ate some lettuce leaves, then some radishes, then some parsley, and after that he munched on some more radishes.

He kept eating until he began to feel sick in his stomach.

Then he went to look for some parsley to relieve his stomach ache.

But suddenly, around the corner, Mr. McGregor appeared on his knees—he had just been planting out young cabbages.

He jumped up immediately and shouted,

"Stop, thief!"

Peter was terribly frightened and rushed as fast as he could go.

He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages and the other shoe fell into the potato patch.

अब केवल दो पैरों पर दौड़ते हुए पीटर और भी तेज़ी से भागा और शायद वह बच ही निकलता—लेकिन तभी उसकी जैकेट का बटन करौंदे के एक बड़े जाल में फँस गया।

Running on only two legs now, Peter ran even faster and might have escaped altogether—but just then, the large buttons on his jacket got caught in a gooseberry net.

मिस्टर मैक्ग्रेगर उसके पास आते जा रहे थे।

Mr. McGregor was coming closer and closer to him.

पीटर डर के मारे थर-थर काँपने लगा।

Peter began to tremble with fear.

उसने अपनी पूरी ताकत लगाकर खुद को झटका दिया और अपनी जैकेट वहीं छोड़कर भाग निकला।

He wriggled out with all his might, leaving his jacket behind, and escaped.

अपनी जान बचाने के लिए बदहवास पीटर एक छप्पर में घुस गया और पानी से भरे एक फव्वारे के डिब्बे में कूद गया।

Desperate to save his life, Peter rushed into a tool-shed and jumped into a watering can full of water.

वह छिपने की कोई अच्छी जगह नहीं थी, क्योंकि मिस्टर मैक्ग्रेगर ने जल्द ही उसे वहाँ ढूँढ़ निकाला।

It was not a good place to hide, because Mr. McGregor soon discovered him there.

Peter jumped out and ran towards a window—but the window was too small.

A kind old mouse saw him crying, but she could not help him because she had a nut in her mouth as big as a pea.

Finally, Peter found a gate in the garden fence and slipped underneath it to the outside.

वह बिना रुके पूरे रास्ते दौड़ता रहा और जैसे-तैसे अपनी जान बचाकर घर पहुँचा।

He kept running the whole way without stopping and somehow reached home, having saved his life.

जब पीटर थका-हारा घर लौटा, तो श्रीमती खरगोश बाबूने के फूलों की चाय बनाने में व्यस्त थीं।

When Peter returned home exhausted, Mrs. Rabbit was busy making chamomile tea.

वह आते ही सीधे अपने बिस्तर पर लेट गया और ऊपर तक कंबल ओढ़ लिया।

As soon as he arrived, he lay straight down on his bed and pulled the blanket all the way up.

श्रीमती खरगोश ने चिंता से अपना सिर हिलाया: न जैकेट है, न जूते—फिर से!

Mrs. Rabbit shook her head with worry: no jacket, no shoes—again!

उन्होंने उसके लिए बाबूने की गरमा-गरम चाय बनाई और उसके बिस्तर के पास लेकर आईं:

She made some hot chamomile tea for him and brought it to his bedside:

"लो पीटर, इसे पी लो। इससे तुम्हें आराम मिलेगा।"

"Here Peter, drink this. It will make you feel better."

फ्लॉप्सी, मॉप्सि और कॉटनटेल की शाम बहुत अच्छी बीती।

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail had a very lovely evening.

रात के खाने में उन्होंने दूध-रोटी और ताज़ा जामुन मज़े से खाए।

For dinner, they enjoyed bread and milk along with fresh berries.

लेकिन पीटर को सिर्फ चाय ही मिली—और वह इस बात से ही खुश था कि कम से कम उसकी जान तो बच गई।

But Peter got nothing but tea—and he was just glad that at least his life was saved.
