    Sleeping Beauty (Briar Rose)

A king and queen once ruled in a very distant land, where in those days there were fairies.

Now, this king and queen had plenty of money, and many beautiful clothes to wear, and many good things to eat and drink, and a carriage to ride in every day; yet although they had been married for many years they had no children, and this grieved them very much.

But one day, as the queen was walking along the riverbank, at the edge of the garden, she saw a poor little fish that had jumped out of the water, and lay gasping and almost dead on the bank.

Then the queen took pity on the little fish and returned it to the river; and before it swam away, it raised its head out of the water and said, 'I know what your wish is, and it shall be fulfilled, in return for the kindness you have shown me--soon you shall have a daughter.'

What the little fish had predicted soon came to pass; and to the queen was born a little girl, so beautiful that the king could not stop looking at her for joy, and said he would hold a great feast and rejoice, and show the child to the whole land.

Therefore he invited his relatives, the nobles, friends, and neighbors.

But the queen said, 'I also want to invite the fairies, so that they may be kind and generous to our little daughter.'

Now there were thirteen fairies in the kingdom; but because the king and queen had only twelve golden plates for them to eat from, they were forced to leave one of the fairies uninvited.

So twelve fairies came, each with a tall red hat on her head, red shoes with high heels on her feet, and a long white wand in her hand; and after the feast was over, they gathered in a circle and gave all their best gifts to the little princess.

One gave her kindness, another beauty, another wealth, and so on until she had everything that was good in the world.

Just as eleven of them had finished blessing her, a great noise was heard in the courtyard, and news arrived that the thirteenth fairy had come, with a black hat on her head, black shoes on her feet, and a broom in her hand; and she immediately entered the dining hall.

Now, because she had not been invited to the feast, she was very angry, scolded the king and queen harshly, and set out to take her revenge.

Then she cried, 'In her fifteenth year, the king's daughter shall be wounded by a spindle, and fall down dead.'

Then the twelfth fairy, who had not yet given her gift, stepped forward and said that the evil must come to pass, but she could soften its harm; therefore her gift was that the king's daughter, when the spindle should wound her, would not truly die, but only fall asleep for a hundred years.

However, the king still hoped to save his dear child completely from the threatening evil; therefore he commanded that all the spindles in the kingdom be bought up and burned.

But all the gifts of the first eleven fairies came true in the meantime; for the princess was so beautiful, well-mannered, kind, and wise that everyone who knew her loved her.

It so happened that on the very day she turned fifteen years old, the king and queen were not at home, and she was left alone in the palace.

So she wandered about by herself, looking at all the rooms and halls, until at last she came to an old tower, to which led a narrow flight of stairs ending at a little door.

In the door was a golden key, and when she turned it the door swung open, and there sat an old lady spinning very diligently.

'What is that, good mother,' said the princess; 'what are you doing there?'

'Spinning,' said the old lady, nodding her head, humming a tune as the wheel hummed!

'How prettily that little thing turns!'

said the princess, and took the spindle and began trying to spin.

But scarcely had she touched it before the fairy's prophecy was fulfilled; the spindle wounded her, and she fell lifeless upon the floor.

However, she was not dead, but had only fallen into a deep sleep; and the king and queen, who had just returned home, and all their courtiers, fell asleep too; and the horses slept in the stables, and the dogs in the yard, the pigeons on the roof of the house, and even the flies slept on the walls.

Even the fire in the hearth stopped flickering and fell asleep; the revolving spit stopped, and the spit turning with a goose on it for the king's dinner stood still; and the cook, who at that very moment pulled the kitchen boy by his hair to give him a slap for something he had done wrong, let go of him, and both fell asleep; the butler, who was secretly tasting the ale, fell asleep with the jug to his lips: and so everything stood still, sleeping the sleep of the righteous.

A large hedge of thorns soon grew all around the palace, and every year it became taller and thicker; until at last the old palace was surrounded and hidden, so that not even the roof or the chimneys could be seen.

But a rumor spread throughout the land about the sleeping beauty Briar Rose (for so was the king's daughter named): so that from time to time, many princes came and tried to break through the thicket into the palace.

This, however, none of them could ever do; for the thorns and bushes held them, as if with hands; and there they stuck fast, and died in despair.

After many, many years, a king's son came to that land; and an old man told him the story of the thicket of thorns; and how a beautiful palace stood behind it, and how a wonderful princess, called Briar Rose, lay sleeping there with all her courtiers.

He also told how he had heard from his grandfather that many, many princes had come and tried to break through the thicket, but they all got stuck in it and died.

Then the young prince said, 'All this shall not scare me; I will go and see her, this Briar Rose.'

The old man tried to prevent him, but he was determined to go.

And lo, on that very day the hundred years came to an end; and when the prince reached the thicket, he saw nothing but beautiful flowering bushes, through which he passed with ease, and they closed behind him as thick as they had always been.

So he finally reached the palace, and there in the yard lay the dogs sleeping; and the horses stood in the stables; and on the roof sat the pigeons in deep sleep, with their heads under their wings.

And as he entered the palace, the flies slept on the walls; the spit stood still; the butler had the jug of ale to his lips, about to take a sip; the maid sat with a fowl in her lap ready for plucking; and the cook in the kitchen was still raising his hand, as if about to strike the boy.

Then he went further on, and everything was so quiet that he could hear every breath he drew; until at last he reached the old tower, and opened the door of the little room where Briar Rose was; and there she lay, in deep sleep upon a couch by the window.

She looked so beautiful that he could not take his eyes off her, so he bent down and gave her a kiss.

But the moment he kissed her, she opened her eyes and awoke, and smiled at him; and they went out together; and soon the king and queen awoke too, and all the courtiers, and looked at each other in great astonishment.

And the horses shook themselves, and the dogs jumped and barked; the pigeons pulled their heads from under their wings, looked around, and flew off into the fields; the flies on the walls buzzed again; the fire in the kitchen flickered; the revolving spit turned, and the spit turned, with the goose for the king's dinner upon it; the butler finished his sip of ale; the maid continued plucking the fowl; and the cook gave the boy the slap on his ear.

And then the prince and Briar Rose were married, and the wedding feast was held; and they lived happily together for all the days of their lives.
