Le Petit Chaperon Rouge
Little Red Riding Hood
-
Once upon a time, there was a charming little girl whom everyone loved just at the sight of her, and most of all her grandmother, who no longer knew what to give her, so much did she love her.
-
Once, she gave her a little red velvet riding hood which suited her so well that she never wanted to wear anything else; that is why she was always called "Little Red Riding Hood."
-
Un jour, sa mère lui dit :
One day, her mother said to her:
-
"Come, Little Red Riding Hood, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine; take them to your grandmother, she is sick and weak, and it will do her good. Leave before it gets too hot, and when you walk, be very good, walk quietly and do not stray from the path, otherwise you might fall and break the bottle, and your grandmother would have nothing left; and when you go into her room, do not forget to say to her " Good morning", and do not go looking in every corner before doing so."
-
"I will be very careful," said Little Red Riding Hood to her mother, giving her her hand to promise it.
-
The grandmother lived in the forest, half a league from the village, and at the very moment Little Red Riding Hood entered the forest, she met a wolf.
-
Red Riding Hood did not know what a wicked creature it was, and she was not afraid of him at all.
-
« Bonjour, Petit Chaperon Rouge », dit-il.
"Good morning, Little Red Riding Hood," he said.
-
« Merci bien, loup. »
"Thank you very much, wolf."
-
« Où vas-tu si tôt, Petit Chaperon Rouge ? »
"Where are you going so early, Little Red Riding Hood?"
-
« Chez ma grand-mère. »
"To my grandmother's."
-
« Qu'as-tu sous ton tablier ? »
"What do you have under your apron?"
-
"Some cake and wine; yesterday was baking day, so my poor sick grandmother is going to have something good to strengthen her."
-
« Où habite ta grand-mère, Petit Chaperon Rouge ? »
"Where does your grandmother live, Little Red Riding Hood?"
-
"A good quarter of a league further into the forest; her house is under the three large oak trees, and the hazel bushes are just below; you surely know it," answered Little Red Riding Hood.
-
Le loup se dit en lui-même :
The wolf said to himself:
-
"What a young and tender creature! What a good, plump morsel -- she will be even better to eat than the old woman. I must act with cunning to catch both."
-
So he walked for a while beside Little Red Riding Hood, then he said:
-
"Look, Little Red Riding Hood, how pretty the flowers are all around here -- why don't you look around? I also think you don't hear how sweetly the little birds are singing; you walk so solemnly as if you were going to school, while everything else here in the forest is so joyful."
-
Little Red Riding Hood looked up, and when she saw the sunbeams dancing to and fro through the trees, and pretty flowers growing everywhere, she thought:
-
"If I brought grandmother a bouquet of fresh flowers, that would please her too. It is so early that I will still arrive well on time"; and she left the path to go deeper into the forest in search of flowers.
-
And every time she picked one, she imagined she saw an even more beautiful one a little further on, and she ran after it, going deeper and deeper into the forest.
-
Meanwhile, the wolf ran straight to the grandmother's house and knocked on the door.
-
« Qui est là ? »
"Who is there?"
-
« Le Petit Chaperon Rouge », répondit le loup.
"Little Red Riding Hood," answered the wolf.
-
"She brings cake and wine; open the door."
-
« Tire la chevillette », s'écria la grand-mère,
"Pull the bobbin," cried the grandmother,
-
"I am too weak and I cannot get up."
-
The wolf pulled the bobbin, the door opened, and without saying a word, he went straight to the grandmother's bed and devoured her.
-
Then he put on her clothes, placed her cap on his head, lay down in the bed, and drew the curtains.
-
As for Little Red Riding Hood, she had run all over looking for flowers, and when she had gathered so many that she could carry no more, she remembered her grandmother and set off to go to her house.
-
She was surprised to find the door of the house wide open, and when she entered the room, she had such a strange feeling that she said to herself:
-
« Oh mon Dieu ! »
"Oh my goodness! How uneasy I feel today, when usually I love being with grandmother so much."
-
Elle s'écria :
She cried out:
-
« Bonjour !
"Good morning!", but received no answer; so she went up to the bed and drew back the curtains.
-
Her grandmother was lying there, her cap pulled down over her face, and she looked very strange.
-
« Oh ! Grand-mère », dit-elle,
"Oh! Grandmother," she said,
-
« que vous avez de grandes oreilles ! »
"what big ears you have!"
-
"All the better to hear you with, my child," was the reply.
-
"But, grandmother, what big eyes you have!"
-
dit-elle.
she said.
-
"All the better to see you with, my dear."
-
"But, grandmother, what big hands you have!"
-
« C'est pour mieux t'embrasser. »
"All the better to hug you with."
-
« Oh ! »
"Oh! But, grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you have!"
-
« C'est pour mieux te manger ! »
"All the better to eat you with!"
-
And no sooner had the wolf said this than with one bound, he was out of bed and swallowed Red Riding Hood.
-
When the wolf had satisfied his appetite, he lay back down in the bed, fell asleep, and began to snore very loudly.
-
A hunter was passing right by the house and said to himself:
-
"How loudly the old woman is snoring! I must go and see if she needs anything."
-
So he entered the room, and when he approached the bed, he saw that the wolf was lying in it.
-
"So here I find you, old sinner!"
-
dit-il.
he said.
-
« Je te cherche depuis longtemps ! »
"I have been looking for you for a long time!"
-
Then, just as he was about to shoot him, it occurred to him that the wolf might have devoured the grandmother, and that she might still be saved; so he did not shoot, but took a pair of scissors and began to cut open the belly of the sleeping wolf.
-
After two snips of the scissors, he saw the little Red Riding Hood shining, and after two more snips, the little girl jumped out, crying:
-
"Ah, how frightened I was! How dark it was inside the wolf!"; and after her, the old grandmother came out alive as well, though scarcely able to breathe.
-
Red Riding Hood quickly went to fetch large stones, with which they filled the wolf's belly, and when he woke up, he wanted to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed immediately and fell dead.
-
Tous les trois furent alors enchantés.
All three of them were then delighted.
-
The hunter stripped the wolf of his skin and went home with it; the grandmother ate the cake and drank the wine that Red Riding Hood had brought, and regained her strength; but Red Riding Hood thought to herself:
-
"As long as I live, I will never leave the path by myself to run into the forest again, when my mother has forbidden me to do so."
-
It is also told that once, when Red Riding Hood was bringing cakes to her old grandmother again, another wolf spoke to her and tried to lure her off the path.
-
Red Riding Hood, however, stayed on her guard, went straight on her way, and told her grandmother that she had met the wolf, and that he had said "good morning" to her, but with such a wicked look in his eyes that, if they had not been on the public path, she was certain he would have devoured her.
-
« Eh bien », dit la grand-mère,
"Well," said the grandmother,
-
"we will lock the door so that he cannot get in."
-
Shortly afterward, the wolf knocked and cried:
-
"Open the door, grandmother, I am Little Red Riding Hood and I am bringing you some cakes."
-
But they said not a word and did not open the door, so the grey beast slunk around the house two or three times, and finally jumped onto the roof, intending to wait until Red Riding Hood went home in the evening, to creep up behind her and devour her in the dark.
-
Mais la grand-mère comprit ses intentions.
But the grandmother understood his intentions.
-
In front of the house was a large stone trough, so she said to the child:
-
"Take the bucket, Red Riding Hood; I made sausages yesterday, so bring the water in which I boiled them and pour it into the trough."
-
Red Riding Hood carried water until the large trough was completely full.
-
The smell of the sausages then reached the wolf, who began to sniff and look down, and finally stretched his neck out so far that he could no longer keep his balance and began to slip; he slid right off the roof into the large trough and drowned there.
-
As for Red Riding Hood, she returned home joyfully, and no one ever did her any harm again.
