1. Pierre Lapin

    Peter Rabbit

Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter.

They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.

One morning old Mrs. Rabbit said to them:

"Now my dears, you may go into the fields or down the lane, but don't go into Mr. McGregor's garden: your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs. McGregor."

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries.

But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr. McGregor's garden, and squeezed under the gate!

First he ate some radishes, then some French beans, and then he ate some lettuce.

  9. Il se sentait très bien.

    He felt very well.

But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor! Mr. McGregor was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages.

  11. « Voleur ! »

    "Stop thief!"

called out Mr. McGregor, and he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake.

Peter took to his heels and ran as fast as he could.

In his haste, he lost one of his shoes among the cabbages, and the other shoe amongst the potatoes.

He ran on four legs so fast that he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately jumped into a watering-can filled with water.

  16. Monsieur McGregor l'aperçut et courut vers lui.

Mr. McGregor spotted him and ran towards him.

Peter managed to jump out of the watering-can and rushed into the tool-shed.

There, he jumped onto a box and looked out the window.

But the window was too small for him, and Mr. McGregor was coming.

He ran off again across the garden.

He passed by the gooseberry bushes, slipped under the nets protecting the strawberries, and ran across the vegetable garden.

But he was so exhausted that he no longer knew where he was going.

His beautiful little blue jacket, with its brass buttons, had gotten caught on the thorns of a gooseberry bush.

He hid in a large overturned flowerpot.

  25. Monsieur McGregor cherchait partout.

    Mr. McGregor was looking everywhere.

He looked for him behind the pots, under the bench, and even in the wheelbarrow.

Then he went home to have his dinner.

Peter waited a long time, then he came out very quietly.

At last he found the gate and slipped underneath it, and ran through the woods all the way home.

He was so tired that he flopped down full length in the rabbit-hole and closed his eyes.

His mother wondered what had happened to him.

She put him to bed, made him some chamomile tea, and gave him a big spoonful of it.

That evening, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and sweet blackberries for dinner.

  34. Pierre, lui, n'avait droit qu'à sa tisane.

But Peter was only allowed his chamomile tea.
