1. Jacques et le Haricot Magique

    Jack and the Beanstalk

Once upon a time, there was a boy named Jack who lived with his mother in a small cottage.

They were very poor, and one morning, the mother said to Jack:

  4. « Il faut vendre la vache. Va au marché. »

"We must sell the cow. Go to the market."

Jack took the cow on the road, but before arriving at the market, he met an old man who said to him:

"I will trade you your cow for these five magic beans."

  7. Jacques accepta avec enthousiasme.

    Jack accepted enthusiastically.

But when he returned home and showed the beans to his mother, she became very angry.

  9. « Des haricots ! Voilà tout ce que tu rapportes ! »

"Beans! Is that all you bring back!"

She threw the beans out the window and sent Jack to bed without dinner.

The next morning, Jack woke up and looked out his window.

An immense beanstalk had grown during the night, so high that it disappeared into the clouds.

  13. Sans hésiter, il commença à grimper.

Without hesitating, he began to climb.

At the top, he discovered a strange and beautiful land, with a gigantic castle.

Jack approached and knocked on the door.

  16. Une femme géante l'ouvrit.

    A giant woman opened it.

"Come in quickly," she said, "before my husband comes back. He eats little boys."

Hardly were they in the kitchen when a sound like thunder was heard.

  19. BOUM !

    BOOM!

  20. BOUM !

    BOOM!

  21. BOUM !

    BOOM!

"Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!"

  23. gronda le géant en entrant.

the giant roared as he entered.

"You are dreaming," said his wife, "it is the stew that you smell."

  25. Le géant s'assit, mangea un repas énorme, puis ordonna qu'on lui apporte son sac d'or.

The giant sat down, ate a huge meal, and then ordered his bag of gold to be brought to him.

He counted his coins for a long time, then fell asleep snoring.

  27. Jacques sortit de sa cachette, attrapa le sac d'or et dégringola le long de la tige de haricot.

Jack came out of his hiding place, grabbed the bag of gold, and scrambled down the beanstalk.

His mother was very happy, and they lived better for a few weeks.

  29. Mais Jacques retourna au château.

But Jack returned to the castle.

This time, he hid inside the oven and waited.

The giant arrived and asked his wife to bring the hen that lays the golden eggs.

The hen laid a brilliant golden egg, and the giant fell asleep again.

Jack seized the hen and ran back down.

  34. La troisième fois, Jacques grimpa de nouveau.

The third time, Jack climbed up again.

  35. Le géant demanda sa harpe dorée.

The giant asked for his golden harp.

The harp played an enchanting music all by itself, and the giant fell asleep.

  37. Jacques prit la harpe, mais elle cria :

Jack took the harp, but it cried out:

  38. « Au secours, maître ! »

    "Help, master!"

The giant woke up roaring and chased after Jack.

Jack climbed down the stalk as fast as possible.

  41. Quand il toucha le sol, il cria :

When he touched the ground, he shouted:

  42. « Maman, la hache ! »

    "Mother, the axe!"

And with a great blow, he chopped the beanstalk in two.

The giant fell from the sky with a terrible crash and never got up again.

With the gold coins, the hen that lays the golden eggs, and the magic harp, Jack and his mother never knew poverty again.

The two of them lived happily ever after.
