THE CAT AND THE ROOSTER

Kukolla oli kerran niin surkea kohtalo, että se joutui kissan kynsiin.

A rooster once met with such a wretched fate that he fell into the clutches of a cat.

Jo kuukauden verran oli mirrin tehnyt mieli päästä siihen käsiksi, mutta se ei kehdannut riidellä ilman mitään näennäistä syytä.

For a month already, the cat had been longing to get her hands on it, but she didn't have the nerve to pick a fight without some apparent reason.

» Kuuleppa, herraseni», sanoi mirri, »mitä ihmettä sinä mekastat ja kieut öisin, niin ettei likelläsi voi nukkua?»

"Listen here, my good sir," said the cat, "why on earth are you making such a racket and crowing at night so that no one nearby can sleep?"

» Voi voi», selitti kukko, »minähän herätän vain silloin, kun pitää jo nousta ja lähteä työhön».

"Oh dear," explained the rooster, "I only wake people up when it's time to get up and go to work."

» Vai niin», tuumi mirri, kyselemättä sen enempää;

"Is that so," thought the cat, asking no further questions;

»nyt sattuu olemaan minun aamiaisaikani, eivätkä kissat elä tyhjillä sanoilla.»

"it just so happens to be my breakfast time now, and cats don't live on empty words."

Sitten mirri raapaisi kukkoa kynnellään ja teki niin lopun sekä kukosta että jutusta.

Then the cat struck the rooster with her claw, bringing an end to both the rooster and the matter.
