Šípková Růženka
Sleeping Beauty
-
Once upon a time, there was a king and queen who ruled in a distant land where fairies lived in those days.
-
This king and queen had plenty of money, plenty of beautiful clothes to wear, plenty of good food and drink, and a carriage in which they went for a ride every day.
-
However, although they had been married for many years, they had no children, and this grieved them greatly.
-
But one day, as the queen was walking along the riverbank at the end of the garden, she saw a poor little fish that had leaped out of the water and lay on the bank, gasping for breath and nearly dead.
-
Královně se malé rybky zželelo a hodila ji zpět do řeky.
The queen took pity on the little fish and threw it back into the river.
-
A než rybka odplavala, vystrčila hlavu z vody a řekla:
And before the fish swam away, it poked its head out of the water and said:
-
“I know what your wish is, and for your kindness to me it shall be granted—soon you will have a daughter.”
-
Co malá rybka předpověděla, to se brzy stalo, a královně se narodila holčička.
What the little fish predicted soon came to pass, and a baby girl was born to the queen.
-
She was so beautiful that the king could not take his eyes off her for joy, and he said that he would hold a great feast, make merry, and show the child to the whole country.
-
Pozval tedy své příbuzné, šlechtice, přátele i sousedy.
So he invited his relatives, nobles, friends, and neighbors.
-
Ale královna řekla:
But the queen said:
-
„Pozvu také víly, aby byly k naší malé dceři laskavé a dobré.“
“I will also invite the fairies, so that they may be kind and good to our little daughter.”
-
There were thirteen fairies in the kingdom, but because the king and queen had only twelve golden plates for them to eat from, they were forced to leave one of the fairies uninvited.
-
Přišlo tedy dvanáct víl, každá měla na hlavě vysoký červený střepíc, na nohou červené boty na vysokém podpatku a v ruce dlouhou bílou hůlku.
So twelve fairies came, each wearing a tall red cap on her head, red high-heeled shoes on her feet, and holding a long white wand in her hand.
-
A když hostina skončila, shromáždily se do kruhu a daly malé princezně všechny své nejlepší dary.
And when the feast was over, they gathered in a circle and gave the little princess all their best gifts.
-
Jedna jí dala dobrotu, druhá krásu, další bohatství a tak dále, až měla všechno dobré na světě.
One gave her goodness, another beauty, another wealth, and so on, until she had everything good in the world.
-
Just as eleven of them had blessed her, a great noise was heard in the courtyard, and news came that the thirteenth fairy had arrived, with a black cap on her head, black shoes on her feet, and a broom in her hand.
-
A vzápětí vstoupila do jídelního sálu.
And immediately after, she entered the dining hall.
-
Protože nebyla na hostinu pozvána, velice se hněvala, velmi vynadala králi a královně a začala vymýšlet svou pomstu.
Because she had not been invited to the feast, she was furious, scolded the king and queen severely, and began to devise her revenge.
-
Vykřikla tedy:
So she cried out:
-
“In her fifteenth year, the king’s daughter shall prick herself with a spindle and fall down dead!”
-
Nato předstoupila dvanáctá z laskavých víl, která ještě nepředala svůj dar.
Thereupon the twelfth of the kind fairies, who had not yet bestowed her gift, stepped forward.
-
She said that the evil curse must be fulfilled, but that she could lessen its harm.
-
So her gift was that when the king's daughter pricked herself with the spindle, she would not truly die, but only fall asleep for a hundred years.
-
However, the king still hoped to spare his beloved child from the threatening evil altogether, and so he commanded that all the spindles in the kingdom be bought up and burned.
-
Meanwhile, however, all the gifts of the first eleven fairies were fulfilled.
-
The princess was so beautiful, well-mannered, good, and wise that everyone who knew her loved her.
-
It happened that on the very day she turned fifteen, the king and queen were not at home, and she was left in the palace all alone.
-
Procházela se tedy sama po paláci a prohlížela si všechny pokoje a komnaty, až nakonec přišla ke staré věži, k níž vedlo úzké schodiště zakončené malými dveřmi.
So she walked around the palace by herself and looked at all the rooms and chambers, until finally she came to an old tower, to which led a narrow staircase ending in a small door.
-
There was a golden key in the door, and when she turned it, the door opened wide, and inside sat an old woman busily spinning.
-
“Why, good mother,” said the princess, “what are you doing there?”
-
„Předu,“ řekla stará paní, přikývla hlavou, prozpěvovala si melodii a kolovrátek u toho bzučel.
“I am spinning,” said the old woman, nodding her head, humming a tune while the spinning wheel buzzed.
-
„Jak pěkně se ta věcička točí!“
“How nicely that little thing spins!”
-
řekla princezna, vzala vřeteno a chtěla si předení vyzkoušet.
said the princess, and she took the spindle and wanted to try spinning.
-
But no sooner had she touched it than the fairy's prophecy was fulfilled.
-
Vřeteno ji ranilo a ona padla bez vlády na zem.
The spindle pricked her, and she fell senseless to the ground.
-
However, it was not that she died, she merely fell into a deep sleep.
-
And the king and queen, who had just arrived home, and their whole court fell asleep as well.
-
The horses fell asleep in the stables, the dogs in the courtyard, the pigeons on the roof of the house, and even the flies fell asleep on the walls.
-
Even the fire on the hearth stopped burning and fell asleep, the spit stopped, and the skewer turning with a goose for the king's lunch no longer moved.
-
The cook, who at that moment was pulling the kitchen boy by the hair to give him a cuff for something he had done wrong, let him go, and they both fell asleep.
-
Sluha, který tajně ochutnával pivo, usnul s džbánem u rtů.
The servant who was secretly tasting the beer fell asleep with the jug to his lips.
-
And so everything came to a stop and fell fast asleep.
-
Kolem paláce brzy vyrostl velký trnový živý plot a každý rok byl vyšší a hustší, až nakonec starý palác zcela obklopil a zahalil, takže nebylo vidět ani střechu, ani komíny.
Soon a large thorn hedge grew around the palace, and every year it grew higher and thicker, until at last it completely surrounded and shrouded the old palace, so that neither the roof nor the chimneys could be seen.
-
However, the rumor of the beautiful sleeping Briar Rose (for that was the name of the king's daughter) spread throughout the whole land, so from time to time various princes came and tried to cut their way through the thicket into the palace.
-
None of them succeeded, however, because the thorns and bushes caught hold of them as if with hands.
-
Zůstali tam pevně vězet a uboze zahynuli.
They remained stuck fast there and perished miserably.
-
Po mnoha a mnoha letech přišel do té země královský syn.
After many, many years, a prince came to that land.
-
An old man told him the story of the thorn thicket, and how behind it stood a beautiful palace in which lay sleeping a gorgeous princess named Briar Rose with all her court.
-
He also told him how he had heard from his grandfather that many, many princes had already come and tried to cut their way through the thicket, but all had gotten stuck in it and died.
-
Tu mladý princ řekl:
Then the young prince said:
-
„Toho všeho se nezaleknu, půjdu a uvidím tu Šípkovou Růženku.“
“I am not afraid of all this; I will go and see this Briar Rose.”
-
The old man tried to prevent him, but he was firmly determined to go.
-
Právě toho dne však sto let uplynulo.
However, on that very day, the hundred years had passed.
-
When the prince came to the thicket, he saw nothing but beautiful flowering bushes through which he passed easily, and they closed behind him again as densely as before.
-
Finally he arrived at the palace, and there in the courtyard lay sleeping dogs, in the stables stood horses, and on the roof sat pigeons fast asleep with their heads under their wings.
-
And when he entered the palace, flies were sleeping on the walls, the spit stood still, the servant had the jug of beer at his lips about to take a drink, the maid sat with poultry in her lap ready to be plucked, and the cook in the kitchen still held his hand raised as if about to strike the boy.
-
Then he went on further, and everything was so quiet that he could hear his every breath.
-
Until at last he came to the old tower and opened the door to the little room in which Briar Rose was.
-
Ležela tam a tvrdě spala na pohovce u okna.
She lay there fast asleep on a couch near the window.
-
She looked so beautiful that he could not take his eyes off her; he bent down and kissed her.
-
But the moment he kissed her, she opened her eyes, woke up, and smiled at him.
-
Then they went out together, and soon the king and queen and the whole court woke up too, looking at each other in great astonishment.
-
Koně se otřepali, psi vyskočili a zaštěkali, holubi vytáhli hlavy zpod křídel, rozhlédli se a odletěli do polí, mouchy na stěnách opět zabzučely, oheň v kuchyni vzplanul, rožeň se začal točit i se špízem a husou pro králův oběd, sluha dopočil svůj doušek piva, služebná pokračovala ve škubání drůbeže a kuchař dal chlapci pohlavek.
The horses shook themselves, the dogs jumped up and barked, the pigeons pulled their heads from under their wings, looked around and flew off into the fields, the flies on the walls buzzed again, the fire in the kitchen flared up, the spit began to turn with the skewer and the goose for the king's lunch, the servant finished his draught of beer, the maid went back to plucking the poultry, and the cook gave the boy a cuff on the ear.
-
A pak se princ a Šípková Růženka vzali, konala se svatební hostina a žili spolu šťastně až do smrti.
And then the prince and Briar Rose were married, a wedding feast was held, and they lived happily ever after.
