Rumpelstiltskin
Rumpelstiltskin
-
Na kraji jednoho lesa, v daleké zemi, protékal pěkný potok a na tom potoku stál mlýn.
By the edge of a wood, in a distant land, flowed a lovely brook, and on that brook stood a mill.
-
Hned vedle byl mlynářův dům a mlynář, to musíte vědět, měl velmi krásnou dceru.
Right beside it was the miller's house, and the miller, you must know, had a very beautiful daughter.
-
She was also very smart and clever; and the miller was so proud of her that one day he told the king of that land, who used to come into the wood to hunt, that his daughter could spin straw into gold.
-
Now this king was very fond of money; and when he heard the miller's boast, greed took hold of him, and he sent for the girl to be brought before him.
-
Pak ji odvedl do komnaty ve svém paláci, kde byla velká hromada slámy, dal jí kolovrat a řekl:
Then he took her to a room in his palace where there was a great heap of straw, gave her a spinning wheel, and said:
-
„To všechno musí být do rána upředeno ve zlato, jestli je ti život milý.“
“All this must be spun into gold by morning, if you value your life.”
-
It was in vain that the poor girl said that it was only a foolish boast of her father's and that she knew nothing of spinning straw into gold: the door of the room was locked, and she was left all alone.
-
Posadila se do jednoho rohu místnosti a začala oplakávat svůj těžký osud; když tu se znenáhla otevřely dveře, kulhavě vstoupil podivný mužíček a řekl:
She sat down in a corner of the room and began to weep over her hard fate; when suddenly the door opened, a strange little man hobbled in, and said:
-
„Dobré jitro, má dobrá dívko, proč pláčeš?“
“Good morning, my good girl, why are you crying?”
-
„Ale!“
“Ah!”
-
she said, “I have to spin this straw into gold, and I do not know how.”
-
„Co mi dáš,“ řekl mužíček, „když to udělám za tebe?“
“What will you give me,” said the little man, “if I do it for you?”
-
„Můj náhrdelník,“ odpověděla dívka.
“My necklace,” answered the girl.
-
He took her at her word, sat down at the spinning wheel, whistled, and sang:
-
„Kolem dokola, kolem dokola, hleďte a zírejte! Motaj, motaj, slámo ve zlato!“
“Round and round, round and round, look and stare! Wind, wind, straw into gold!”
-
And the spinning wheel turned merrily round and round; the work was quickly done, and all the straw was spun into gold.
-
When the king came and saw it, he was greatly astonished and pleased; but his heart grew even more greedy for gain, and he locked up the poor miller's daughter once more with a new task.
-
Then she knew not what to do, and sat down once again to cry; but the little man soon opened the door and said:
-
„Co mi dáš, když splním tvůj úkol?“
“What will you give me if I carry out your task?”
-
„Prsten z mého prstu,“ řekla.
“The ring from my finger,” she said.
-
A tak její malý přítel vzal prsten, začal znovu pracovat u kolovratu, hvízdal si a zpíval:
So her little friend took the ring, set to work at the spinning wheel again, whistled, and sang:
-
„Kolem dokola, kolem dokola, hleďte a zírejte! Motaj, motaj, slámo ve zlato!“
“Round and round, round and round, look and stare! Wind, wind, straw into gold!”
-
až bylo dlouho před ránem všechno opět hotovo.
until long before morning everything was done once more.
-
Král měl velikou radost, když uviděl ten třpytivý poklad; ale stále neměl dost: vzal tedy mlynářovu dceru k ještě větší hromadě a řekl:
The king was overjoyed when he saw the glittering treasure; but he still could not get enough: so he took the miller's daughter to an even larger heap and said:
-
„To všechno musí být upředeno dnes v noci; a pokud bude, staneš se mou královnou.“
“All this must be spun tonight; and if it is, you shall become my queen.”
-
Jakmile byla sama, přišel mužíček a řekl:
As soon as she was alone, the little man came and said:
-
„Co mi dáš, když ti upředu zlato i potřetí?“
“What will you give me if I spin the gold for you a third time?”
-
„Už mi nic nezbylo,“ řekla.
“I have nothing left,” she said.
-
„Tak mi slib,“ řekl mužíček, „své první dítě, až se staneš královnou.“
“Then promise me,” said the little man, “your first child when you become queen.”
-
„To se možná nikdy nestane,“ pomyslela si mlynářova dcera; a protože nevěděla o jiném způsobu, jak úkol splnit, řekla, že udělá, co žádá.
“That may never happen,” thought the miller's daughter; and since she knew no other way to fulfill the task, she said she would do what he asked.
-
The spinning wheel turned again to the sound of the old song, and the little man once more spun the heap into gold.
-
Král přišel ráno, a když našel vše, co si přál, musel dodržet slovo; oženil se tedy s mlynářovou dcerou a ona se opravdu stala královnou.
The king came in the morning, and when he found everything he wished for, he had to keep his word; so he married the miller's daughter, and she truly became queen.
-
At the birth of her first little child, she was overjoyed and forgot all about the little man and what she had said.
-
Ale jednoho dne přišel do jejího pokoje, kde seděla a hrála si se svým miminkem, a připomněl jí to.
But one day he came into her room, where she was sitting and playing with her baby, and reminded her of it.
-
Dívka pak hořce plakala nad svým neštěstím a řekla, že mu dá veškeré bohatství království, když ji nechá být, ale marně; až nakonec její slzy obměkčily jeho srdce a řekl:
The girl then wept bitterly over her misfortune and said she would give him all the wealth of the kingdom if he would leave her alone, but in vain; until at last her tears softened his heart, and he said:
-
„Dám ti tři dny lhůtu, a pokud mi během té doby řekneš mé jméno, dítě ti zůstane.“
“I will give you a reprieve of three days, and if during that time you tell me my name, you shall keep the child.”
-
Královna pak ležela celou noc bdělá a přemýšlela o všech podivných jménech, která kdy slyšela; a poslala posly po celé zemi, aby zjistili nová.
The queen then lay awake all night thinking of all the strange names she had ever heard; and she sent messengers throughout the land to discover new ones.
-
Druhý den mužíček přišel a ona začala: TIMOTĚJ, ICHABOD, BENJAMIN, JEREMIÁŠ a všechna jména, na která si vzpomněla; ale ke všemu a ke každému z nich řekl:
The next day the little man came and she began: TIMOTHY, ICHABOD, BENJAMIN, JEREMIAH, and all the names she could think of; but to each and every one of them he said:
-
„Paní, to není mé jméno.“
“Madam, that is not my name.”
-
The next day she began with all the comical names she had heard of: BANDY-LEGS, HUNCHBACK, CROOK-SHANK, and so on; but the little gentleman kept saying to every one of them:
-
„Paní, to není mé jméno.“
“Madam, that is not my name.”
-
Třetí den se jeden z poslů vrátil a řekl:
On the third day, one of the messengers returned and said:
-
„Cestoval jsem dva dny, aniž bych slyšel jakákoli jiná jména; ale včera, když jsem stoupal na vysoký kopec mezi stromy v lese, kde si liška a zajíc dávají dobrou noc, uviděl jsem malou chaloupku; a před chaloupkou hořel oheň; a kolem ohně tancoval na jedné noze směšný mužíček a zpíval:
“I traveled for two days without hearing any other names; but yesterday, as I was climbing a high hill among the trees in the forest where the fox and the hare bid each other goodnight, I saw a little cottage; and in front of the cottage a fire was burning; and around the fire a ridiculous little man was dancing on one leg and singing:
-
„Vesele si hostinu vystrojím. Dnes budu vařit pivo, zítra péct; vesele budu tancovat a zpívat, neboť příští den přivede cizince.
“Merrily I shall prepare a feast. Today I'll brew beer, tomorrow I'll bake; merrily I shall dance and sing, for the next day will bring the stranger. My lady has not the slightest clue that Rumpelstiltskin is my name!”
-
When the queen heard this, she leaped for joy, and as soon as her little friend arrived, she sat upon her throne and called together her courtiers to make merry; and the nurse stood beside her with the baby in her arms, as though it were ready to be handed over.
-
The little man then began to smirk at the thought of taking the poor child home to his cottage in the woods; and he cried:
-
„Tak, paní, jaké je mé jméno?“
“Now, madam, what is my name?”
-
„Je to JAN?“
“Is it JOHN?”
-
zeptala se.
she asked.
-
„Ne, paní!“
“No, madam!”
-
„Je to TOMÁŠ?“
“Is it THOMAS?”
-
„Ne, paní!“
“No, madam!”
-
„Je to KUBA?“
“Is it JACOB?”
-
„To není.“
“No, it is not.”
-
„Může být vaše jméno RUMPELSTILTSKIN?“
“Could your name be RUMPELSTILTSKIN?”
-
řekla paní mazaně.
said the lady slyly.
-
„To ti řekla nějaká čarodějnice!--to ti řekla nějaká čarodějnice!“
“Some witch told you that!--some witch told you that!”
-
vztekle zvolal mužíček a zadupal pravou nohou tak hluboko do podlahy, že ji musel chytit oběma rukama, aby ji vytáhl.
cried the little man furiously, and stomped his right foot so deep into the floor that he had to catch hold of it with both hands to pull it out.
-
Then he hurried off, while the nurse laughed and the baby babbled; and the whole court mocked him for having had so much trouble for nothing, saying:
-
„Přejeme vám velmi dobré jitro a veselou hostinu, pane RUMPELSTILTSKINE!“
“We wish you a very good morning and a merry feast, Mr. RUMPELSTILTSKIN!”
