  1. Popelka

    Cinderella

  2. Manželka jednoho bohatého muže onemocněla; a když cítila, že se blíží její konec, zavolala si k posteli svou jedinou dceru a řekla:

The wife of a rich man fell ill; and when she felt that her end was near, she called her only daughter to her bedside and said:

  3. „Buď vždycky hodné děvče a já se na tebe budu dívat z nebe a opatrovat tě.“

“Always be a good girl, and I will look down on you from heaven and take care of you.”

  4. Krátce nato zavřela oči a zemřela a byla pochována v zahradě; a holčička chodívala každý den k jejímu hrobu a plakala a ke všem kolem byla vždy hodná a milá.

Shortly after, she closed her eyes and died, and was buried in the garden; and every day the little girl went to her grave and wept, and was always good and kind to everyone around her.

  5. A napadl sníh a přikryl hrob krásnou bílou peřinou; ale než přišlo jaro a slunce ji opět rozpustilo, otec se znovu oženil.

And snow fell and covered the grave with a beautiful white quilt; but before spring came and the sun melted it again, the father married once more.

This new wife brought two daughters of her own into the house with her; they had pretty faces, but ugly hearts, and hard times began for the poor little girl.

  7. „Co chce ta budižkničemu v salonu?“

“What does that good-for-nothing want in the parlor?”

  8. říkaly.

    they said.

  9. „Kdo chce jíst chléb, musí si ho napřed zasloužit. Pryč s tou služkou z kuchyně!“

“He who wants to eat bread must first earn it. Away with that kitchen maid!”

  10. Pak jí vzaly její pěkné šaty, daly jí staré šedé šaty na sebe, vysmály se jí a vyhnaly ji do kuchyně.

Then they took away her pretty clothes, put old gray clothes on her, laughed at her, and drove her into the kitchen.

  11. Tam musela těžce pracovat; vstávat brzy ráno ještě před svítáním, nosit vodu, rozdělávat oheň, vařit a prát.

There she had to work hard; get up early in the morning before dawn, carry water, light the fire, cook, and wash.

  12. Kromě toho jí sestry všemožně ubližovaly a vysmívaly se jí.

Besides that, her sisters mistreated her in every possible way and made fun of her.

In the evening, when she was tired, she had no bed to lie in, but had to lie down by the hearth in the ashes; and because she was naturally always dusty and dirty as a result, they called her Cinderella.

Once it happened that her father was going to a fair and asked his wife's daughters what he should bring them.

  15. „Pěkné šaty,“ řekla první.

    “Pretty dresses,” said the first.

  16. „Perly a drahokamy,“ zvolala druhá.

“Pearls and jewels,” exclaimed the second.

  17. „A ty, dítě,“ řekl své vlastní dceři, „co bys chtěla ty?“

“And you, child,” he said to his own daughter, “what would you like?”

  18. „První proutek, drahý otče, který vám cvrnkne do klobouku, až se budete vracet domů,“ řekla.

“The first twig, dear father, that brushes against your hat on your way home,” she said.

  19. On pak koupil prvním dvěma pěkné šaty, perly a drahokamy, o které si řekly; a na zpáteční cestě, když jel zeleným hájem, lískový proutek ho zavadil o klobouk a málem mu ho srazil.

He then bought the first two the pretty dresses, pearls, and jewels they had asked for; and on the way back, as he was riding through a green grove, a hazel twig brushed against his hat and almost knocked it off.

  20. Tak ho ulomil a vzal s sebou; a když přišel domů, dal ho své dceři.

So he broke it off and took it with him; and when he arrived home, he gave it to his daughter.

She took it, went to her mother's grave, planted it there, and wept so much that she watered it with her tears; and the twig grew until it became a fine tree.

  22. Třikrát denně k němu chodívala a plakala; a brzy přilétl ptáček, postavil si na stromě hnízdo, povídal si s ní, opatroval ji a přinesl jí všechno, co si přála.

Three times a day she went to it and wept; and soon a little bird flew down, built a nest in the tree, talked to her, looked after her, and brought her everything she wished for.

Then it happened that the king of that land held a feast that was to last for three days; and his son was to choose a bride from those who came.

  24. Dvě Popelčiny sestry byly také pozvány; zavolaly si ji tedy a řekly:

Cinderella's two sisters were invited as well; so they called her to them and said:

  25. „Učeš nám vlasy, vyčisti boty a zavaž nám stuhy, protože jdeme tancovat na královskou slavnost.“

“Comb our hair, clean our shoes, and tie our ribbons, for we are going to dance at the royal feast.”

She did as she was told; but when everything was done, she could not help herself and burst into tears, thinking how much she would like to go to the ball with them; and in the end, she begged her stepmother dearly to let her go.

  27. „Ty, Popelko!“

    "You, Cinderella!"

  28. řekla macecha.

    said the stepmother.

  29. „Ty, která nemáš nic na sebe, žádné šaty, a ani neumíš tancovat – ty chceš jít na bál?“

"You, who have nothing to wear, no clothes, and cannot even dance – you want to go to the ball?"

  30. A když pořád prosila, macecha nakonec řekla, aby se jí zbavila:

And when she kept begging, the stepmother finally said, to get rid of her:

  31. „Vysypu tuto misku hrachu do popela, a jestli ho za dvě hodiny celý přeberete, půjdeš na slavnost také.“

"I will empty this dish of peas into the ashes, and if you pick them all out in two hours, you shall go to the celebration too."

  32. Pak vysypala hrách do popela, ale dívka vyběhla zadními dveřmi do zahrady a zvolala:

Then she emptied the peas into the ashes, but the girl ran out the back door into the garden and cried out:

  33. „Sem, sem, nebi navzdory, hrdličky a konopky, leťte z obory! Kosu, drozde, pěnkavo milá, sem, sem, ať jste tu vskutku za chvíli! Všichni do jednoho pomozte mi hned, pospěšte si, pospěšte – zobl, zobl, zob!“

"Here, here, despite the sky, turtle doves and linnets, fly from the preserve! Blackbird, thrush, dear chaffinch, here, here, so you are truly here in a moment! Every single one of you help me right now, hurry, hurry – peck, peck, peck!"

  34. Pak nejprve přilétly dvě bílé holubičky kuchyňským oknem; po nich přilétly dvě hrdličky; a za nimi přilétli všichni ptáčkové pod nebem, švitořili, třepetali křídly a sletěli dolů do popela.

Then first two white doves came flying through the kitchen window; after them came two turtle-doves; and behind them flew all the birds under the heavens, twittering, fluttering their wings, and swooped down into the ashes.

  35. A holubičky sklonily hlavičky a daly se do práce, zobl, zobl, zob; a pak ostatní začali zobl, zobl, zob; a všichni dohromady brzy vyzobali všechna dobrá zrna, dali je do misky a popel nechali ležet.

And the doves bowed their little heads and set to work, peck, peck, peck; and then the others began peck, peck, peck; and together they soon picked out all the good grains, put them into the dish, and left the ashes lying there.

  36. Dlouho před vypršením hodiny byla práce hotová a všichni zase vyletěli okny ven.

Long before the hour was up, the work was done and they all flew out through the windows again.

  37. Pak Popelka přinesla misku maceše a měla obrovskou radost, že teď půjde na bál.

Then Cinderella brought the dish to her stepmother and was overjoyed that she would now go to the ball.

  38. Ale macecha řekla:

    But the stepmother said:

  39. „Ne, ne! Ty špindíro, nemáš šaty a neumíš tancovat; nikam nepůjdeš.“

"No, no! You slut, you have no clothes and cannot dance; you are going nowhere."

  40. A když Popelka moc prosila, aby směla jít, macecha řekla:

And when Cinderella begged dearly to be allowed to go, the stepmother said:

  41. „Jestli dokážeš za jednu hodinu vybrat z popela dvě takové misky hrachu, půjdeš také.“

"If you can pick two such dishes of peas out of the ashes in one hour, you shall go too."

And so she thought that she would finally be rid of her.

  43. A tak vysypala dvě misky hrachu do popela.

And so she emptied two dishes of peas into the ashes.

But the girl went into the garden behind the house and cried out as before:

  46. Pak nejprve přilétly dvě bílé holubičky kuchyňským oknem; po nich přilétly dvě hrdličky; a za nimi přilétli všichni ptáčkové pod nebem, švitořili a poskakovali okolo.

Then first two white doves came flying through the kitchen window; after them came two turtle-doves; and behind them flew all the birds under the heavens, twittering and hopping around.

  47. A sletěli dolů do popela; a holubičky sklonily hlavičky a daly se do práce, zobl, zobl, zob; a pak ostatní začali zobl, zobl, zob; a dali všechna dobrá zrna do misek a veškerý popel nechali ležet.

And they swooped down into the ashes; and the doves bowed their little heads and set to work, peck, peck, peck; and then the others began peck, peck, peck; and they put all the good grains into the dishes and left all the ashes lying there.

  48. Ještě než uplynula půlhodina, bylo všechno hotovo a vyletěli zase ven.

Even before half an hour had passed, everything was done and they flew out again.

And then Cinderella carried the dishes to her stepmother and rejoiced that she would now go to the ball.

  50. Ale macecha řekla:

    But the stepmother said:

  51. „Nic ti to nepomůže, nemůžeš jít; nemáš šaty a neumíš tancovat, jenom bys nám udělala ostudu“; a odešla se svými dvěma dcerami na bál.

"It will do you no good, you cannot go; you have no clothes and cannot dance, you would only bring shame upon us"; and she left for the ball with her two daughters.

  52. Když byli všichni pryč a doma nikdo nezůstal, Popelka šla smutně k lískovému stromu, sedla si pod něj a zvolala:

When everyone had gone and no one was left at home, Cinderella went sadly to the hazel tree, sat under it and cried out:

  53. „Zatřes se, zatřes, lísko milá, syp na mě zlato, stříbro zčerstva!“

"Shake yourself, shake yourself, dear hazel, shower me with gold and silver anew!"

Then her friend the little bird flew down from the tree and brought her a gold and silver dress and slippers of shimmering silk; she put them on and followed her sisters to the feast.

But they did not recognize her and thought she must be some foreign princess, so lovely and beautiful did she look in her rich dress; and they did not even think of Cinderella, taking it for granted that she was safely at home in the dirt.

  56. Královský syn k ní brzy přistoupil, vzal ji za ruku a tancoval s ní a s nikým jiným; a její ruku už nepustil; a když ji někdo jiný přišel požádat o tanec, řekl:

The king's son soon approached her, took her by the hand, and danced with her and no one else; and he would not let go of her hand; and when anyone else came to ask her to dance, he said:

  57. „Tato dáma tancuje se mnou.“

"This lady is dancing with me."

  58. A tak tancovali až do pozdních nočních hodin; a pak chtěla jít domů.

And so they danced until late into the night; and then she wanted to go home.

  59. A královský syn řekl:

    And the king's son said:

  60. „Půjdu s tebou a doprovodím tě domů“; chtěl totiž vidět, kde krásná dívka bývá.

"I will go with you and accompany you home"; for he wanted to see where the beautiful girl lived.

  61. Ale ona mu nepozorovaně proklouzla a běžela k domovu; a když ji princ sledoval, skočila do holubníku a zavřela dveře.

But she slipped away from him unnoticed and ran toward home; and as the prince followed her, she jumped into the pigeon house and shut the door.

He then waited until her father came home, and told him that the unknown girl who was at the feast had hidden in the pigeon house.

But when they pried open the door, they found no one inside; and when they returned to the house, Cinderella lay as always in her dirty clothes by the ashes, with a small oil lamp flickering in the hearth.

  64. Běžela totiž co nejrychleji přes holubník k lískovému stromu, tam si sundala krásné šaty a položila je pod strom, aby je ptáček mohl odnést, a znovu si lehla do popela ve svých malých šedých šatech.

For she had run as fast as she could through the pigeon house to the hazel tree, taken off her beautiful clothes and laid them under the tree for the bird to carry away, and laid down again in the ashes in her little gray dress.

  65. Druhý den, když se slavnost znovu konala a otec, macecha i sestry odešli, šla Popelka k lískovému stromu a řekla:

The next day, when the feast was held again and her father, stepmother, and sisters had left, Cinderella went to the hazel tree and said:

  66. „Zatřes se, zatřes, lísko milá, syp na mě zlato, stříbro zčerstva!“

"Shake yourself, shake yourself, dear hazel, shower me with gold and silver anew!"

  67. A ptáček přilétl a přinesl ještě krásnější šaty, než měla předchozí den.

And the bird flew down and brought an even more beautiful dress than the one she had the day before.

And when she arrived at the ball in it, everyone marveled at her beauty; but the king's son, who was waiting for her, took her by the hand and danced with her; and when anyone asked her to dance, he said as before:

  69. „Tato dáma tancuje se mnou.“

"This lady is dancing with me."

  70. Když přišla noc, chtěla jít domů; a královský syn šel za ní jako předtím, aby viděl, do kterého domu jde.

When night came, she wanted to go home; and the king's son followed her as before to see which house she was going to.

But she suddenly slipped away from him into the garden behind her father's house.

  72. V té zahradě stála pěkná velká hrušeň plná zralého ovoce; a Popelka, protože nevěděla, kam se schovat, na ni nepozorovaně vyskočila.

In that garden stood a fine large pear tree laden with ripe fruit; and Cinderella, not knowing where to hide, leaped unnoticed into it.

  73. Královskému synovi se pak ztratila z očí a nemohl zjistit, kam zmizela, ale čekal, až přišel její otec domů, a řekl mu:

She then vanished from the king's son's sight and he could not discover where she had disappeared, but he waited until her father came home and said to him:

  74. „Neznámá dáma, která se mnou tancovala, mi proklouzla a myslím, že musela skočit na hrušeň.“

"The unknown lady who danced with me slipped away from me, and I think she must have jumped into the pear tree."

  75. Otec si pomyslel:

    The father thought to himself:

  76. „Může to být Popelka?“

    "Could it be Cinderella?"

So he had an axe brought and they chopped down the tree, but they found no one in it.

  78. A když přišli zpátky do kuchyně, ležela tam Popelka v popelu; slezla totiž na druhé straně stromu, odnesla své krásné šaty zpátky ptáčkovi k lískovému stromu a pak si oblékla své malé šedé šaty.

And when they came back into the kitchen, Cinderella was lying there in the ashes; for she had climbed down the other side of the tree, carried her beautiful dress back to the bird at the hazel tree, and then put on her little gray dress.

  79. Třetí den, když otec, macecha a sestry odešli, šla znovu do zahrady a řekla:

On the third day, when her father, stepmother, and sisters had gone, she went again into the garden and said:

  80. „Zatřes se, zatřes, lísko milá, syp na mě zlato, stříbro zčerstva!“

"Shake yourself, shake yourself, dear hazel, shower me with gold and silver anew!"

  81. Pak jí její hodný přítel ptáček přinesl šaty ještě krásnější než ty předchozí a střevíčky, které byly celé ze zlata; takže když přišla na slavnost, nikdo nevěděl, co úžasem nad její krásou říct.

Then her good friend the bird brought her a dress even more beautiful than the previous ones and slippers that were made entirely of gold; so when she arrived at the feast, no one knew what to say for wonder at her beauty.

  82. A královský syn netancoval s nikým jiným než s ní; a když ji někdo jiný požádal o tanec, řekl:

And the king's son danced with no one else but her; and when anyone else asked her to dance, he said:

  83. „Tato dáma je moje partnerka, pane.“

"This lady is my partner, sir."

  84. Když přišla noc, chtěla jít domů; a královský syn chtěl jít s ní a říkal si:

When night came, she wanted to go home; and the king's son wanted to go with her, thinking to himself:

  85. „Tentokrát už mi neuteče“; ale ona mu přece jen znovu proklouzla, i když v takovém spěchu, že jí na schodech spadl levý zlatý střevíček.

"This time she will not escape me"; but she slipped away from him again nonetheless, though in such a hurry that her left golden slipper fell off on the stairs.

  86. Princ střevíček vzal a druhý den šel za svým otcem králem a řekl:

The prince took the slipper and the next day went to his father the king and said:

  87. „Vezmu si za ženu dámu, které padne tento zlatý střevíček.“

"I will take as my wife the lady whom this golden slipper fits."

  88. Obě sestry měly velkou radost, když to slyšely; měly totiž pěkné nohy a nepochybovaly o tom, že zlatý střevíček obují.

Both sisters were delighted when they heard this; for they had handsome feet and had no doubt they could put on the golden slipper.

  89. Nejstarší šla do pokoje, kde střevíček byl, jako první a chtěla si ho vyzkoušet, a matka stála vedle ní.

The eldest went into the room where the slipper was first and wanted to try it on, with her mother standing beside her.

But her big toe would not fit into it, and the shoe was altogether too small for her.

  91. Tu jí matka podala nůž a řekla:

Then her mother handed her a knife and said:

  92. „To nevadí, odřízni ho; až budeš královnou, nebudeš se muset starat o palce; nebudeš muset chodit pěšky.“

"Never mind, cut it off; when you are queen, you won't have to worry about toes; you won't have to go on foot."

And so the foolish girl cut off her toe, forced the slipper onto her foot, and went out to the king's son.

He then took her as his bride, sat her beside him on his horse, and rode off toward home with her.

But on the way back, they had to ride past the hazel tree that Cinderella had planted; and on a branch sat a little dove, singing:

  96. „Zpátky, zpátky! Podívej se na tu botu! Bota je moc malá, ta není pro tebe! Princi, princi, hledej znovu svoji nevěstu, ta, co sedí vedle tebe, není ta pravá!“

"Turn back, turn back! Look at the shoe! The shoe is too small, that one isn't for you! Prince, prince, look again for your bride, the one sitting beside you is not the right one!"

Then the prince dismounted from the horse and looked at her foot; and from the blood streaming from it, he saw what a trick she had played on him.

  98. Otočil tedy koně, přivedl falešnou nevěstu zpátky domů a řekl:

So he turned his horse around, brought the false bride back home, and said:

  99. „Toto není ta pravá nevěsta; ať si střevíček zkusí obout druhá sestra.“

"This is not the true bride; let the other sister try to put on the slipper."

  100. Ta pak šla do pokoje a do boty dostala celou nohu kromě paty, která byla moc velká.

She then went into the room and managed to get her whole foot into the shoe except for her heel, which was too large.

  101. Ale matka jí ji tam tlačila, dokud netekla krev, a odvedla ji ke královskému synovi; a он si ji posadil jako svou nevěstu vedle sebe na koně a odjel s ní.

But her mother forced it in until blood flowed, and brought her to the king's son; and he set her beside him on his horse as his bride and rode off with her.

  102. Ale když přijeli k lískovému stromu, malá holubička tam stále seděla a zpívala:

But when they reached the hazel tree, the little dove was still sitting there, singing:

Then he looked down and saw that so much blood was streaming from the slipper that her white stockings were completely red.

  105. Otočil tedy koně a i tu přivedl zpátky.

So he turned his horse around and brought her back too.

  106. „Toto není ta pravá nevěsta,“ řekl otci.

“This is not the right bride,” he said to the father.

  107. „Nemáte žádné jiné dcery?“

“Do you have no other daughters?”

  108. „Ne,“ řekl otec.

    “No,” said the father.

  109. „Je tu jen malá špinavá Popelka, dítě mé první ženy; jsem si jistý, že ona nevěstou být nemůže.“

“There is only little dirty Cinderella, my first wife's child; I am sure she cannot be the bride.”

  110. Princ mu řekl, aby ji poslal.

The prince told him to send for her.

  111. Ale macecha řekla:

    But the stepmother said:

  112. „Ne, ne, je moc špinavá, neodváží se ani ukázat.“

“No, no, she is too dirty, she wouldn't even dare to show herself.”

  113. Princ však trval na tom, aby přišla; a ona si nejprve umyla obličej a ruce, a pak vešla a udělala mu pukrle a on jí podal zlatý střevíček.

But the prince insisted that she come; and she first washed her face and hands, and then came in and curtsied to him, and he handed her the golden slipper.

Then she took her heavy shoe off her left foot and put on the golden slipper; and it fitted her as if it had been made just for her.

  115. A když se k ní přiblížil a podíval se jí do tváře, poznal ji a řekl:

And as he drew near to her and looked into her face, he recognized her and said:

  116. „Toto je ta pravá nevěsta.“

    “This is the right bride.”

The stepmother and the two sisters were frightened and turned pale with rage when he took Cinderella onto his horse and rode off with her.

  118. A když přijeli k lískovému stromu, bílá holubička zpívala:

And when they came to the hazel tree, the little white dove sang:

  119. „Domů, domů! Podívej se na tu botu! Princezno, ta bota byla vyrobená pro tebe! Princi, princi, vezmi si domů svoji nevěstu, vždyť ta, co sedí vedle tebe, je ta pravá!“

“Home, home! Look at that shoe! Princess, that shoe was made for you! Prince, prince, take home your bride, for the one sitting beside you is the right one!”

And when the little dove finished singing her song, she flew down, sat on Cinderella's right shoulder, and rode with her all the way home.
