1. Rumpelstiltskin

    Rumpelstiltskin

By a wood, in a country far away, ran a fine stream of water; and upon the stream stood a mill.

The miller's house was close by, and the miller, you must know, had a very beautiful daughter.

She was, moreover, very clever and bright; and the miller was so proud of her that one day he told the king of the land, who used to come hunting in the wood, that his daughter could spin gold out of straw.

Now this king was very fond of money; and when he heard the miller's boast his greed was awakened, and he ordered the girl to be brought before him.

Then he took her to a room in his palace where there was a great heap of straw, gave her a spinning wheel, and said:

"All this must be spun into gold before morning, if you do not want to lose your life."

It was in vain that the poor girl said it was only foolishness on her father's part, as she could do no such thing as spin straw into gold: the door of the room was locked and she was left alone.

She sat down in a corner of the room and began to mourn her sad fate; when suddenly the door opened, and a funny-looking little man limped in and said:

  10. «Bon dia, bona noia; per què plores?».

"Good morning, good girl; why are you crying?"

  11. «Ai!», va dir ella, «he de filar aquesta palla en or, i no sé com fer-ho».

"Alas!" she said, "I have to spin this straw into gold, and I don't know how to do it."

  12. «Què em donaràs», va dir el follet,

"What will you give me," said the elf,

  13. «per fer-ho per tu?».

    "to do it for you?"

  14. «El meu collaret», va respondre la noia.

    "My necklace," answered the girl.

He took her at her word, sat down at the spinning wheel, and whistled and sang:

"Round and round, see what a wonder! Spin and spin, straw into pure gold!"

And the wheel turned merrily; the work was quickly done, and all the straw was turned into gold.

When the king came and saw it, he was very surprised and pleased; but his heart became even greedier for gain, and he locked up the poor miller's daughter again with a new task.

Then she did not know what to do, and sat down again to cry; but before long the dwarf opened the door and said:

"What will you give me to do your task?"

"The ring off my finger," she said.

So her little friend took the ring, and began to work at the spinning wheel again, and whistled and sang:

"Round and round, see what a wonder! Spin and spin, straw into pure gold!"

until, long before morning, everything was done again.

The king was delighted to see all that shining treasure; but he still had not had enough: so he took the miller's daughter to an even larger heap and said:

"All this must be spun tonight; and if you do it, you shall be my queen."

As soon as she was left alone, that dwarf came in and said:

"What will you give me to spin gold for you this third time?"

  29. «Ja no em queda res», va dir ella.

"I have nothing left," she said.

"Then say you will give me," said the little man, "the first little child you have when you are queen."

"That may never happen," thought the miller's daughter; and as she knew no other way to do her task, she said she would do what he asked of her.

The wheel turned again with the same song, and the little man spun the heap into gold once more.

The king arrived in the morning and, finding everything he wanted, felt bound to keep his word; so he married the miller's daughter, and she truly became queen.

At the birth of her first little child she was very happy, and forgot all about the dwarf and what he had said.

But one day he entered her room, where she was sitting playing with her baby, and reminded her of it.

Then she became deeply saddened by her misfortune, and said she would give him all the wealth of the kingdom if he left her alone, but in vain; until at last her tears softened him, and he said:

"I will give you three days' grace, and if during this time you tell me my name, you shall keep your child."

Then the queen spent a sleepless night, thinking of all the strange names she had ever heard; and she sent messengers throughout the land to find new ones.

The next day the little man came, and she began with TIMOTHY, ICHABOD, BENJAMIN, JEREMIAH, and all the names she could remember; but to each and every one of them he said:

  40. «Senyora, aquest no és el meu nom».

"Lady, that is not my name."

On the second day she began with all the comical names she could hear of, SPINDLE-SHANKS, HUMP, SHORT-LEG, and so on; but the little gentleman still said to each of them:

  42. «Senyora, aquest no és el meu nom».

"Lady, that is not my name."

On the third day one of the messengers returned and said:

Avui faré cervesa, demà pa forniré; Alegrement ballaré i me n'aniré, Que demà un desconegut tindré. ”».

"I have traveled two days without hearing any other name; but yesterday, while climbing a high hill, among the trees of the forest where the fox and the hare say good night to each other, I saw a little hut; and in front of the hut a fire was burning; and around the fire a comical dwarf was dancing on one leg and singing: 'Merrily I'll make the feast. Today I'll brew beer, tomorrow I'll bake bread; Merrily I'll dance and go away, For tomorrow a stranger I shall have. Little does my lady dream That Rumpelstiltskin I am called at all times!'"

When the queen heard this she jumped for joy, and as soon as her little friend arrived she sat on her throne, and called all her court around to enjoy the fun; and the nurse was at her side with the baby in her arms, as if he were completely ready to be handed over.

Then the little man began to chuckle under his breath at the thought of having the poor child, to take him home to his hut in the woods; and he cried out:

  47. «Ara, senyora, quin és el meu nom?».

"Now, lady, what is my name?"

  48. «És JOAN?», va preguntar ella.

    "Is it JOHN?" she asked.

  49. «No, senyora!».

    "No, lady!"

  50. «És TOMEU?».

    "Is it TOM?"

  51. «No, senyora!».

    "No, lady!"

  52. «És JAUMET?».

    "Is it JIMMY?"

  53. «No ho és».

    "It is not."

"Could your name be RUMPELSTILTSKIN?" said the lady slyly.

"Some witch has told you!--some witch has told you!" cried the little man, and he stamped his right foot with such rage into the ground that he was forced to take hold of it with both hands to pull it out.

Then he ran off as fast as he could, while the nurse laughed and the baby gurgled; and all the court laughed at him for having had so much trouble for nothing, and said:

"We wish you a very good day, and a merry feast, Mr. RUMPELSTILTSKIN!"
