    Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time, there was a beloved little girl, cherished by everyone who saw her, but loved most of all by her grandmother, who never spared anything for her dear grandchild.

One day, her grandmother gave her a little cloak of red velvet, and it suited her so well that she never wanted to wear anything else; therefore, everyone began to call her "Little Red Riding Hood."

One day, her mother said to her:

"Come, Little Red Riding Hood, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine; take them to your grandmother, for she is sick and weak, and this nourishment will do her good. Set out before it gets too hot, and when you go, walk quietly and politely and do not leave the path, otherwise you might fall and break the bottle, and then your grandmother will get nothing; and when you go into her room, do not forget to say, " Good morning," and do not look around in every corner before you do so."

Little Red Riding Hood said to her mother:

"I will take good care of myself," and gave her hand upon it as a promise.

The grandmother lived out in the wood, half a league from the village, and as soon as Little Red Riding Hood entered the wood, she met a wolf.

But Little Red Riding Hood did not know what a wicked creature he was, so she was not at all afraid of him.

He said to her, "Good day, Little Red Riding Hood."

    She replied politely:

    "Thank you, wolf."

"Where are you going so early this morning, Little Red Riding Hood?"

    "To my grandmother's."

"And what are you carrying in your apron?"

"Cake and wine; yesterday was baking day, so my poor sick grandmother will have something good to restore her strength."

"And where does your grandmother live, Little Red Riding Hood?"

    Little Red Riding Hood replied:

"A good quarter of a league further in the wood; her house stands under the three large oak trees, and the nut bushes are just below; you must surely know it."

    The wolf thought to himself:

"What a tender, young creature! What a nice plump mouthful, she will taste better than the old woman. I must act craftily to catch both."

He walked for a short while beside Little Red Riding Hood, then he said:

"Look, Little Red Riding Hood, how beautiful the flowers are all around us, why don't you look around? I think, too, that you do not hear how sweetly the birds are singing; you are walking as solemnly as if you were going to school, while everything here in the wood is merry."

Little Red Riding Hood raised her eyes, and when she saw the sunbeams dancing among the trees and the beautiful flowers growing everywhere, she thought:

"If I brought my grandmother a fresh bouquet of flowers, that would make her happy too. It is still early, and I will get there in good time." ; And so she ran off the path into the woods to look for flowers.

Each time she picked a flower, she fancied she saw an even prettier one farther away, so she ran after it, until she ventured deeper and deeper into the forest.

Meanwhile, the wolf ran straight to the grandmother's house and knocked on the door.

    "Who is there?"

    The wolf answered:

"Little Red Riding Hood, I have brought cake and wine; open the door."

    The grandmother called out:

"Lift the latch; I am very weak and cannot get up."

The wolf lifted the latch, the door sprang open, and without saying a word, he went straight to the grandmother's bed and swallowed her.

Then he put on her clothes, placed her bonnet on his head, lay down in the bed, and drew the curtains.

As for Little Red Riding Hood, she ran here and there picking flowers, and when she had gathered as many as she could carry, she remembered her grandmother and set off on her way to her.

She was surprised to find the cottage door open, and when she entered the room, a strange feeling came over her, and she said to herself:

"Oh my! How anxious I feel today, even though at other times I enjoy staying with my grandmother so much."

So she called out: "Good morning," , but she received no reply; so she went to the bed and drew back the curtains.

She found her grandmother lying there, with her bonnet pulled down over her face, looking very strange.

She said: "Oh, Grandmother, what big ears you have!"

    The answer came:

"All the better to hear you with, my child."

She said: "But, Grandmother, what big eyes you have!"

"All the better to see you with, my dear."

"But, Grandmother, what big hands you have!"

"All the better to hug you with."

"Oh, but Grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you have!"

"All the better to eat you with!"

No sooner had the wolf spoken these words than he sprang from the bed in one leap and swallowed Little Red Riding Hood.

When the wolf had satisfied his appetite, he lay back down in the bed, fell asleep, and began to snore very loudly.

A huntsman was passing by the house at that moment, and he thought to himself:

"How can that old woman snore like that! I must go in and see if she needs anything."

So he entered the room, and when he came to the bed, he saw the wolf lying in it.

He said: "Do I find you here, you old sinner! I have been hunting for you for a long time!"

Then, just as he was about to fire at him, it occurred to him that the wolf might have swallowed the grandmother and that she might still be saved, so he did not shoot, but took a pair of scissors and began to cut open the sleeping wolf's belly.

After he had made two snips, he saw the red cape gleaming, and after two more snips, the little girl jumped out, crying:

"Oh, how frightened I was! How dark it was inside the wolf's belly!" ; And then the old grandmother came out alive as well, but she could scarcely breathe.

Soon Little Red Riding Hood brought large stones, and they filled the wolf's belly with them; when he awoke, he tried to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed and fell dead on the spot.

    Then all three rejoiced.

The huntsman skinned the wolf and carried the pelt home; the grandmother ate the cake and drank the wine that Little Red Riding Hood had brought, and revived; while Little Red Riding Hood thought to herself:

"For the rest of my life, I will never leave the path alone to run into the forest, as long as my mother has forbidden me from doing so."

It is also told that on another occasion, when Little Red Riding Hood was again taking cakes to her old grandmother, another wolf spoke to her and tried to lure her away from the path.

But Little Red Riding Hood was wary, so she went straight on her way, and told her grandmother that she had met the wolf, and that he had said to her "Good morning," , but with such a wicked look in his eyes that she was certain he would have devoured her if they had not been on the open road.

    So the grandmother said:

"Very well, we shall shut the door so he cannot get in."

A short while later, the wolf knocked on the door and called out:

"Open the door, Grandmother, I am Little Red Riding Hood, and I have brought you some cakes."

But they neither spoke nor opened the door, so the grey-bearded one crept around the house two or three times, and finally jumped onto the roof, intending to wait until evening for Little Red Riding Hood to go home, so he could creep after her and devour her in the dark.

But the grandmother guessed what he had in mind.

There was a large stone trough in front of the house, so she said to the girl:

"Take the bucket, Little Red Riding Hood; I made some sausages yesterday, so carry the water I boiled them in and pour it into the trough."

Little Red Riding Hood kept carrying water until the large trough was completely full.

Then the smell of the sausages reached the wolf, so he sniffed and looked down, and in the end he stretched his neck so far that he could no longer keep his balance and began to wobble, slipped straight off the roof into the large trough, and drowned.

As for Little Red Riding Hood, she returned home happily, and no one ever dared to harm her again.
